Both Mahiru and Gundham are classmates of Class 77-B, and participants of the Killing School Trip.
During the first chapters of the Killing School Trip in Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Mahiru and Gundham do not converse often, as Gundham is severely introverted, and Mahiru does not exist in the game long enough to share many interactions with him.
However, during the second chapter of the game, Mahiru makes a friend out of Hiyoko Saionji, and Gundham makes a small effort to praise her efficiency by pointing out that she has 'taken a liking to you.' Soon after, Gundham begins to mock Monokuma at the loss of the headmaster's first Monobeast. However, when Mahiru instructs him to stop talking to Monokuma, Gundham listens to her.
However, after Mahiru's death at the end of chapter two, Gundham does not express much sadness over the death of Mahiru. However, this is not uncommon for Gundham, as he seems to disregard many of the deaths within the game without sadness. However, this may just be part of the act he puts on.
When Hiyoko erects a shrine in honor of Mahiru and the rest of the dead students, Gundham regards this shrine with disgust, deeming it to have a radiance of evil aura.
During Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy, Gundham brings his bear, Gunther, into the classroom in order to display his talent. Mahiru seems rather confused at this display, even as Gundham uses his bear to interrupt Kazuichi Soda and Teruteru Hanamura's perverted chatter about some of their fellow classmates. Mahiru continues to question the bear, and Gundham never answers her questions.
During the non-canon events of Ultimate Talent Development Plan, Mahiru approaches Gundham after photographing his animals. Gundham expresses his thanks through his strange expressions, and Mahiru scolds him for failing to thank someone normally. Gundham then corrects his thank you to sound more appropriate, and Mahiru expresses indifference, saying she was glad to be able to pet the animals. Gundham then asks permission to put her photographs on his website, and she allows him to. Mahiru then expresses that she hates how little sense Gundham's dialogue makes, but that she's grown used to it.
- Gundham – “Now then, let me hear you scream! I shall make such sweet music for you!”
- Mahiru – “Hey Gundham... you should stop playing with that stuffed animal.”
- — Mahiru telling Gundham to stop encouraging Monokuma.
- Gundham – “I see... To make the ephemeral moments of this world eternal...that is your secret art!”
- Mahiru – “Come on... can't you at least thank someone normally?”
- Gundham – “Kehehe...I am thankful for any record of the brief time my demon beasts have in this world.”
- — Gundham expressing thanks for Mahiru's photography in Ultimate Talent Development Plan.
The ship came about due to Mahiru's personality, which some found to be compatible with Gundham's. When Gundham begins to berate Monokuma, it is Mahiru who can easily convince him to stop. Furthermore, she is able to get him to properly express thanks during their Ultimate Talent Development Plan event together.
However, this ship still qualifies as a rarepair, and is often overshadowed by the more popular ships for either character.
