Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-2009)[]

Gwen and Harry are close friends, forming a trio with Peter Parker. All three are juniors at Midtown Manhattan Magnet High School, and are generally considered to be "nerds" and "losers" by their peers. Gwen has a crush on Peter, and Harry has a crush on Gwen. Peter seemingly reciprocates Gwen's feelings, but is far too busy being Spider-Man to properly address his feelings. Harry wants to ask Gwen to the upcoming Fall Formal, but doesn't have the courage.

Harry decides to try out for the football team in an attempt to please his father. Gwen attends the try-outs and cheers both him and Peter on. When Harry makes the team, Gwen continues to attend games and cheer for him.

However, Harry becomes addicted to taking "globulin green", a performance enhancing drug created by Oscorp. Gwen begins to notice that Harry is acting different and confides in Peter. Unfortunately, Peter is too busy being Spider-Man to be able to put any time or effort into getting through to Harry. Gwen tries all that she can to convince Harry to talk to her or to stop taking the "green", but he refuses. One night she finds him passed out in the school courtyard, but he simply brushes her off.

Eventually, Harry is pulled from school and sent to rehab. Gwen is relieved to know that he is getting the help that he needs. She is one of the only people that keeps in contact with him while he is away. Even Peter, supposedly his closest friend, doesn't have the time to write him any letters.

Harry returns to M3 for the beginning of the new year. Peter tells him that he's been dating Liz Allan, which encourages Harry to finally take a step in confessing to his crush, Gwen. Gwen accepts his offer to be her boyfriend, seemingly as a means to make Peter jealous. Harry is ecstatic to be dating her. Harry, Peter, Liz, Gwen, Mary Jane Watson, and Mark Allan go out for dinner together for Valentine's Day. Gwen arrives with a makeover courtesy of Mary Jane, which stuns both Peter and Harry. When Gwen approaches Peter first, Harry again shows jealousy.

A few weeks later, the Green Goblin reappears in New York. Harry has also gone missing, and Gwen is worried about him. She continually calls his phone, but receives no answer. A couple nights after the Goblin returns, Harry shows up on Gwen's front porch and says that he needs help. Gwen calls Peter and asks him to meet at her house. When he arrives, Harry explains to both of them that the Green Goblin kidnapped him and took away his phone. He says that he threw away all of the globulin green and that he hasn't had any blackouts. Peter and Gwen encourage Harry to tell his parents about what happened, and he agrees.

Harry leaves Gwen's house, but stands on the front porch. Peter remains inside, and he and Gwen discuss their relationship. They both admit that they have feelings for each other, and that they should have acted on them earlier. Peter tries to kiss Gwen, but she tells him that she won't cheat on Harry. She promises to break things off with him, so that she and Peter can be together. Harry, still outside, hears everything.

That night, Peter, as Spider-Man, has a major fight with the Green Goblin. The Goblin's true identity is revealed to be Norman Osborn. At the climax of their fight, the Goblin is thrown into a large vat of pumpkin bombs and seemingly dies. Peter and Gwen both attend Norman's funeral alongside Harry. Harry very pointedly tells Gwen that she's the only good thing left in his life, and that he doesn't know what he'd do without her. Gwen and Peter share a look, and its clear that Gwen won't break up with Harry in this state.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)[]

Gwen is an employee at OsCorp, but doesn't officially meet Harry until they find themselves in an elevator together in the second film. Harry introduces himself as an old friend of Peter's, and Gwen says that she knows who he is. Harry says he'd thought that the two had broken up, but Gwen explains that it's complicated. Harry agrees that everything is always complicated when it comes to Peter, but reminds Gwen that that is why she is so important to him. They part ways when the elevator comes to Gwen's stop.

Later, Harry, as the Green Goblin, captures Gwen as a means of getting to Peter. He takes her to the top of a clocktower, and proceeds to fight Peter (as Spider-Man). Peter demands that Harry let Gwen go, and he does; by simply dropping her. Gwen falls, and Peter rushes to save her. However, he is too late and she is killed by Harry's actions.

Fanon[]

Gwarry is a well-known ship in the Spider-Man fandom, but it is not very well loved. This is due to the general toxic nature of their relationship in canon, most clearly shown in the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series. Despite having three live action film series, Gwen and Harry have rarely been shown to interact with each other, which further limits their draw with shippers. Those who do ship Gwarry tend to be fans of either PeterMJ or SpiderCat and want to see Peter's other possible love interest in a relationship so that Peter is free to pursue Mary Jane or Felicia.

There are currently over 80 works on AO3 for this ship. It is Harry's fifth most popular ship. Gwarry is most often rivalled by their respective ships with Peter, PeterGwen and Parksborn.
