- I promise you, we're always going to be together! I'm never going to leave you!
- — Gyutaro's promise to Ume
GyuDaki is the family ship between Gyutaro and Daki/Ume from the Demon Slayer fandom.
Canon[]
Gyutaro and Daki have a very strong sibling bond, even as demons. Daki has always relied on Gyutaro ever since they were born. They grew up poor so they only had eachother.
Gyutaro and Ume were born in the lowest caste of the Entertainment District hierarchy. Before Gyutaro was born, their mother tried killing herself many times. Once Gyutaro was born, she also tried killing him numerous times. In the Entertainment District, where they grew up, beauty was everything and determined your status. Gyutaro was made fun of by others because of his ugliness and since he was filthy. Gyutaro's bullies would often taunt and throw rocks at him. When Gyutaro was hungry, he would eat bugs and rats due to a lack of proper nutrition.

When his younger sister, Ume was born, everything in Gyutaro's life changed. Unlike Gyutaro, Ume was conventionally beautiful. Ume meant everything to him, so he always protected and cared for her. As long as they had each other, they would be fine. Soon enough, Gyutaro became a debt collector and taught Ume to steal and collect, just like he did.
Everything in their life was going well until Ume turned thirteen. She had stabbed and blinded a samurai with a hairpin for insulting Gyutaro, as shown in the Second Fanbook. Because of Ume's actions, she was punished and burned alive. Gyutaro, who was in his mid-20s at the time, was at work while this had occurred, so there was nothing he could do to prevent Ume's punishment from happening.

When Gyutaro discovered Ume's body, he immediately began crying, shouting for Ume to turn back to the way she was. Suddenly, the samurai who Ume had stabbed abruptly sliced Gyutaro's back open with a katana in an attempt to kill him. Gyutaro had killed the samurai and the woman who had accompanied him out of rage. Afterwards, he tried to carry Ume to find help but fell into the snow due to his weakness.
While searching for anyone who could help them, Gyutaro ran into Doma, who was Upper Rank 6 at the time. Dōma noticed that Ume would die very soon, and asked Gyutaro if he wanted to be a demon, to which Gyutaro agreed. Dōma gave both siblings his blood to transform them into demons.
Both of them were able rise to the Upper Ranks after killing and eating numerous humans. However, as Muzan mentioned, Daki was holding Gyutaro back. He had to the potential to become a higher ranked demon, but wanted to stay the same rank as his sister because he cared about her so much. He usually let Daki fight, only coming out when she needs help as shown in the Entertainment District Arc. Gyutaro is also seen giving Daki one of his eyes, so that he can watch her while they fight.
After Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui, accompanied by Tanjiro Kamado and his friends, Inosuke Hashibira, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Nezuko Kamado defeat the two siblings, they are seen arguing about whose fault it is that they lost. Gyutaro started saying that he wishes he never protected someone as worthless as Daki, but Tanjiro covers his mouth, saying that Gyutaro doesn't feel that way at all and that they only have each other left in this world. Daki's head soon starts disintegrating and she screams for her brother to do something about it.
They are later seen in between the entrance to heaven and hell. Because of Gyutaro's actions, he was made to go to hell to repent. Daki's situation was different: since she had involuntarily became a demon, she had the chance to go to heaven. Gyutaro walked towards hell, telling a now human Daki not to follow him anymore. Ume tries to apologize to him by saying she didn't mean what she said, and she didn't want to admit that they lost because of her. Gyutaro still orders her to head to the opposite direction where heaven was, but Ume grabs onto him and tells her brother that they're always going to be together. She starts crying and asks Gyutaro if he remembers the promise they made. Gyutaro, finally accepting Ume's decision, carries Ume on his back and they both walk in the direction of hell.
Quotes[]
- “No matter how many times I'm reborn, I'm always going to be your little sister!”
- — Ume to Gyutaro
- “Ume, you were my pride and joy.”
- — Gyutaro's thoughts about Ume
Fanon[]
GyuDaki is extremely well-liked in the fandom. This is because of how close and genuine the bond between the two is. Something that draws attention to the siblings is when Ume got to go to heaven, but wanted to go to hell with her brother. Many fans also thought that their backstory was one of the most tragic in Demon Slayer, and thus created AU's where the two of them didn't have to suffer as much as they did in the canon timeline. There are also many fans who like the angst and would create sad animations or fanarts of the siblings.
