Introductions

Mary and Luke are introduced when Mary abruptly shows up drunk at Wayne Enterprises to talk to Kate. A security guard tries to throw her out, but her drunken persistence leads Luke to say it's alright. Mary thinks Kate is mad at her because of Mary's mother's revelation, and is surprised to find a bemused Luke who tries to cover for his and Kate's Bat-related activities. Hurt and deciding she needs someone to be there for her in lieu of Kate, especially after finding out that Kate is with Alice, Mary plants herself in Luke's offices. They have bantering weird conversation after weird conversation, spurred on by Mary's drunken rant about how she's a better sister than Alice. Simultaneously, Mary takes it upon herself to help Luke investigate the face-stealer and Luke's seems quasi-surprised that Mary is actually helpful in her current state. Mary orders pizza and demonstratively brings it home with her after eating most of it, making a grand exit.[1]

Mary easily bypasses security to everyone's shock when she comes in to talk to Kate about their family situation. She catches Kate and Luke about to enter the Batcave through the secret doorway, although Mary doesn't know it's the Batcave and doesn't ask any further questions as she's distracted by the family issues consuming her, and also Julia, whom she's never met before.[2] After Alice murders Mary's mother, Mary is distraught and tries to distract herself with getting a medical professional as an expert witness for her Dad's trial, as Alice has also framed him for his wife's murder. Mary sees Alice at Gotham University and alerts Sophie, who at first thinks Mary is suffering from the stress of the trauma she's going through. After Mary finally lets out her grief and reconciles with Kate, she joins Luke and Kate in figuring out who this new Alice/Beth is that has suddenly shown up in Gotham. After Kate figures out it's the result of the Crisis, she is abducted by Mouse who demands Alice's release from prison. Beth convinces Luke to let her pose as Alice and Mary helps Beth prepare. After Beth saves Kate, they do a birthday surprise at The Hold-Up for Beth and Kate. Luke fondly smiles at Mary's awkwardness as she tries to bond with her sisters. Beth and Luke bring out a cake, and Luke and Mary start singing happy birthday to the twins.[3]

The Crows set in a manhunt for Alice and to protect Beth, Mary and Luke are attempting to get Beth out of Gotham. To avoid detection, Mary wants them to come up with an emergency that will see them through, about which she and Luke start to bicker until Beth has to interrupt them and they tell her to hide. Mary tried to pull her Gotham rich persona on the Crows and it almost works until Beth gets a pain attack and lets out a noise. Luke and Mary are badgered out of the car and Beth is discovered, but Batwoman helps them get away.[4] After Beth is murdered, they're all shocked and Mary offers Luke comforting words as he was with Beth when she was shot. Kate holds an opening for her bar to lure a serial killer terrorising Gotham. Mary attends and after spending the night in the Batcave checking surveillance, Luke decides to make an appearance to 'save' Mary as she is getting hit on by an influencer. When he arrives, Mary sort of negates the 'Luke as my boyfriend' rescue, but the girl takes the hint and leaves anyway. Luke calls her on it and Mary defers by tipsily complimenting Luke's glow-in-the-dark tie. Luke then excuses himself as Kate has a lead, leaving a confused Mary.[5]

Fanon[]

Their first meeting had fans excited for a potential pairing, especially if Mary eventually joins Team Batwoman, which many fans hope to see happen. Their first meeting was also the first time Luke interacted with someone other than Kate, which people were happy to see. The pairing isn't widespread as of yet, given how early in the series it is, but the fan reception is promising.
