Oh you, always so dashing.
—Mikhail to Hanunue in Hanu's Adventure.

Hanuhail is the slash ship between Hanunue and Legwork Char Mikhail from the Honkai: Star Rail fandom.

Canon[]

In canon, Legwork Char Mikhail, former mechanic of the Astral Express, and Hanunue, founder of the Bloodhound Family, were known to be very close comrades and friends, with stories recounting their journeys being told through the lens of the cartoon duo "Clockie" and "Hanunue" in both events and in-game readables.

Clockie: Dreamjoy Memoir/Films[]

Legwork Char Mikhail, also known as The Watchmaker, Father of Penacony, was a former mechanic and member of the Astral Express. At some point in Mikhail's travels, the Astral Express travels to Penacony intending to connect it to the Silver Rail. However, the night before arriving at Penacony, Mikhail has a strange and long dream about a sea of fire, a swathe of darkness, a vast wasteland, and a glorious paradise. When the Astral Express arrives at Penacony, it is described as gloomy and nightmarish. Mikhail's curiosity drives him to explore, he sees dilapidated wooden houses lit aflame, and IPC agents roaming through the ruins, and he asks "What on earth is going on here."

Penacony at this point was a bare, desolate world owned by the IPC and used to labour inmates to recover the overflowing Memory Bubbles for the Garden of Recollection. Due to this, the prison eventually became cut off from reality and the inhabitant's consciousnesses became linked in dreams.

Mikhail and his crewmates, Tiernan and Razalina, cross paths with an intoxicated Mr Sousa, who offers them a drink from the bubbly potion, soulglad, in his hand. Mikhail doesn't want to drink any, but the crew buy a few bottles, unable to refuse the marketing. The crew ventured deeper, eventually discovering an abandoned mine filled with rich gems that appeared to be acting as the town's treasure vault.

Mischievous and unable to resist, Mikhail takes a couple of gems against the warnings of his crewmates, who chastise him saying, "You don't really think about whose stuff you're taking when you usually open up chests, do you!"

It is here that Mikhail meets Hanunue for the first time, who stumbles across the nameless inside the mine. Faced with these strangers, Hanunue makes a cool grunting "Hmph" noise before lifting up his rocket launcher without hesitation. Mikhail chooses to beg for mercy but Hanunue arrests them, however, Mr Sousa appears before them again, a friend of Hanunue. Mr Sousa mediates the conflict and earnestly advises Hanunue to relax, Hanunue agrees and temporarily sets aside his hostility. With Hanunue's permission, Mr Sousa recites the story of Penacony to the trailblazers, who all listen attentively. Mr Sousa says that the people of Penacony are subject to the wills of the IPC and it wasn't until a Stellaron fell upon the planet that Hanunue sparked an uprising. After hearing their story of revolution, Mikhail is described as beginning to admire Hanunue's courage, telling him, "You're brave~"

However, as the crew is conversing with Hanunue about the situation, they are interrupted and surrounded by high-ranking IPC personnel, Boss Stone, and their agents, who threaten Hanunue. However, Hanunue does not back down and leads an attack to free themselves from the IPC encirclement. After the battle, Razalina, who is seriously injured, falls unconscious from her wounds. Without saying a word and with complete disregard for personal safety, Hanunue steals herbal medicine from the IPC to help heal her. Later, at night, the IPC launches another ambush on Hanunue's stronghold. Without anywhere to retreat, the crew and the townsfolk are forced to fight, however, Hanunue lets out a confident "hmph", which has everyone feeling more at ease.

Mikhail and Hanunue are able to temporarily defeat the IPC but are aware that if the IPC doesn't leave, Penacony will always remain locked in nightmares. Unable to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the people, Mikhail, alongside Tiernan and Razalina, decides to help Hanunue and the townsfolk reclaim Penacony from the IPC's control. After an arduous battle for control, they manage to fend off Boss Stone. However, Hanunue warns Mikhail that Boss Stone has many lackeys and will soon return. Mikhail states that the Astral Express crew will never sit idly by against those who oppress the innocent and decides to rush straight into the fray. However, this war is far more brutal than Mikhail can imagine. The IPC is far more powerful than Hanunue's limited force, they will need the entire population to rise up.

At one point, Hanunue and Mikhail come across Sister Wildflower, who is currently being hunted by an IPC subordinate of Boss Sone, Lieutenant Chitters. Sister Wildflower states that if they want her help they will have to save her. Hanunue rescues her and is gifted a flower in return, Mikhail notes that Hanunue was "totally blushing." In the area, Mikhail also finds a mourning actor who states that if they want their help, then they have to share a sad story. Mikhail recites the story of Astral Express member Falcon, and the mourning actor accepts it, saying, "That's a real tearjerker. I hope you'll be ever sadder in the future." Mikhail also meets Lakkika Alfafa, who was one of the IPC's lackeys. Lakkika asks what he might gain in exchange for giving them his help, and Mikhail shows him treasure from the Astral Express. Easily convinced by this, Lakkika agrees to join forces.

Seeing Hanunue and the Astral Express managing to grow their forces, the IPC's Boss Stone is concerned and decides to launch an ambush on Hanunue's panic room, aiming to quell the uprising. Unprepared, many are injured in the attack but Hanunue calls upon their allies to help defend. The townsfolk and the crew fight together in solidarity. They eventually win, but the number of casualties is tragic, and in order to commemorate those who gave their lives, Hanunue organises a funeral. On the same day, Hanunue gathers all his friends, but doesn't say a thing, only letting out a "hmph". But everyone understands his intentions, the day of the counterattack is soon upon them. The people heed his call and are filled with conviction for freedom. The night before the battle, they stage a grand party. Which might be the start of a long and grand event or the final feast for everyone. However, at the party, everyone is worried about the upcoming perilous battle. Seeing this, Mikhail goes as far as to say that he'll settle down in the town and get married after the fight.

During the last battle, they had paid a heavy price in defeating the IPC, but Boss Stone can still manage a comeback. Anxious, the townsfolk propose that Hanunue conduct peace talks. Hanunue rejects the proposal completely and vows to completely drive Boss Stone out of town. Mikhail states that half-measured resistance is the same as no resistance at all. However, Hanunue's persistence to fight causes a rift between some of the townsfolk and some of his old allies, who begin to turn against him. Some choose to defect to the IPC and others decide to go rogue. In the face of this, Hanunue is said to feel very lost, however, Mikhail and the crew believe he is in the right and stay with him, determined to defeat the IPC.

At night, Hanunue appears in front of Mikhail's house to talk about some dreams he's been having. Although Hanunue only lets out some grunting "Hmphs," Mikhail completely understands what Hanunue means. Hanunue's wish is to turn the nightmare of the current Penacony into a dream world. Mikhail is filled with inspiration upon hearing it.

However, despite their determination, many of their comrades begin to fall one by one. At one point, a traitor uses enemy artillery lights to light up the stronghold. Overwhelmed with grief Mikhail is filled with rage. Knowing that if they don't put an end to the struggle, then more and more friends will be harmed. Hanunue catches the traitor and points his launcher into the air, aiming at the traitor's head, however, Mikhail spares him, deciding that their forces could use him. The decisive battle looms imminent. While Hanunue's force is strong, Boss Stone and the rebels cannot be underestimated. Mikhail tries to think over their next steps to guarantee that Hanunue isn't defeated.

The night before the decisive battle, Hanunue has a strange dream -- he witnesses a storm, a huge tree flourishing, a lofty skyscraper being built in a vast wasteland, and then a clock being buried underground,  before finally a song of tranquillity. Hanunue is woken by the dream. He sleeps and shares the same room as Mikhail, however, due to Mikhail's snoring, Hanunue isn't able to remember his dream.

After a long and hard battle, Hanunue wins the war. He redraws the boundary lines of Penacony and pronounces it is no longer territory under the IPC's control, with a single "Hmph." Mikhail translates what he says, "What he means is that everyone has now regained their rights -- the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!" The war finally won, and the Astral Express prepares to leave on their next journey, however, Mikhail has no desire to leave. When Navigator Granholm asks what Mikhail is doing, Mikhail replies that the people need him, as well as Hanunue. Hearing this, Navigator Granholm gives Mikhail Falcon's hat and asks that Mikhail, Tiernan and Razalina, write to them.

Together, Hanunue and Mikhail begin to rebuild Penacony as the land of dreams they imagined. However, strange storms begin to plague the town, the townsfolk suggest using the Stellaron to fix the storm, but Mikhail disagrees and hides the Stellaron in his house. While Mikhail searched for the truth, Hanunue protected the residents and town, knowing that Boss Stone was still lurking, ready to make his next move. Hanunue's concerns are confirmed, as he discovers a person hanging around outside town who turns out to be a lackey sent by Boss Stone, and rescues some of the hostages that were taken by the lackeys. However, he sustains some injuries in the scuffle. Meanwhile, Mikhail discovers that it was Lakkika, who had stolen something important to Penacony, however, Lakkika flees without the chance to talk.

The IPC's army is approaching, and Hanunue's situation becomes critical. Still, he tracks down Lakkika, aiming his launcher squarely at Lakkika, who rattles off excuses and attempts to bargain with him. Faced with this, Hanunue lets out a cold "hmph" and then pulls the trigger. The story also presents an alternative, which is that Lakkika was captured and sentenced to death after a trial for his betrayal, with the council stating it was what Hanunue would do. Mikhail finally returns but the town has already been taken over by the IPC. He finds out that Hanunue has also been captured. However, as a nameless, Mikhail refuses to give up. Mikhail disguises himself using an IPC uniform and manages to find some "seeds" that are capable of ending the storm and hides the "seeds" with Sister Wildflower.

When Boss Stone learns that Mikhail has stolen the "seeds" he sends out 22 of his most trusted agents to find Mikhail. Following the death of his father, Oti Alfalfa takes control of the family and vows to atone for his father's sins. He offers his family's vaults to help Mikhail defeat the IPC. Mikhail agrees to take the money and puts it toward saving Hanunue. Even without Hanunue leading them, the townsfolk aid in the mission. Among the chaos, Mikhail sneaks into the cells where Hanunue is imprisoned and recuses him. Hanunue is saved, but the town is still surrounded by the IPC. Suffering under the dual siege of Boss Stone and the storm, the town's resources are gradually getting depleted.

That night, Hanunue wakes in the middle of the night, although asleep, Mikhail senses some of his movements, assuming that Hanunue might just be going to the bathroom. However, Hanunue plans to infiltrate the IPC's base alone. He hijacks one of the armoured mechs and steals from their ammunition warehouse. Using voice communication, Mikhail tells Hanunue that even with this power, he won't be able to defeat them, but Hanunue only disdainfully "hmphs" in response. Understanding what he means, Mikhail begs Hanunue not to go and says "Don't go, Hanunue... What should I do without you in Penacony?"

Standing beside the firing button, Hanunue is resigned and tells Mikhail "I'm sure you can do it. Because you are The Watchmaker," and then he fires the button, causing a chain of explosions that blow up the IPC's mansion and base. Mikhail runs to the location but finds only debris and Hanunue's hat. He mourns saying, "Hanunue... but why? If you don't wake up now, Penacony will..." However, one of their allies, Gluax interrupts him, telling himself to pull himself together and regain control of the situation. Mikhail stands in the ruined streets, shedding inconsolable tears.

The townsfolk begin to emerge and ask if they have finally defeated Boss Stone. Understanding what they need is reassurance, Mikhail lies and says that Hanunue has suffered grave injuries and is temporarily unable to fulfil his duties, but that he will continue making decisions for Penacony. Reassured by his words, everyone casts aside their fears, revelling in the grand victory and throws a grand celebration in honour of Hanunue, even though he is absent. Everyone has a cheerful time except for Mikhail.

That night, Mikhail is burdened with thoughts that keep him awake until the early hours of the morning. When does sleep, in his dreams, Mikhail finds himself standing in a vast desert, with Hanunue positioned at the far end, gazing up at the sky. Mikhail runs to Hanunue asking him to return. In silence, Hanunue only watches him, then gently removes his hat, and they talk.

Hanunue: "Hmph, it's beautiful here, don't you think?"
Mikhail: "Yeah, is that why you don't want to wake up?"
Hanunue: "No, the reason I don't want to wake up... is because all of you are sleeping so deeply."
Mikhail: "I..."
Hanunue: "Then come here and rest, 'Watchmaker.' If you lack the courage to face the nightmares, then seek refuge in sweet dreams for now..."
Hanunue: "But remember, as long as this is a dream, you'll have to wake up from it sooner or later."
Hanunue emits a cool hmph.
Then Mikhail awakens, his face adorned with a tear stain.

From this point on, Mikhail mentions Hanuenue several times, referencing him as a point of courage and inspiration as he continues to rebuild Penacony and fight against the IPC. Mikhail often asks what he can do without Hanuenue, at one point finding himself alone in the centre of town, thinking that he must surpass Hanuenue to succeed. When Mikhail sleeps, he dreams of Tiernan, Razalina and Hanuenue and knows that they will always accompany him in his dreams.

Fanon[]

Hanuhail is a well-liked ship but remains somewhat niche, due to most of Mikhail's and Hanunue's interactions and lore being hidden in NPC quests, events and readable items, such as Hanu's Adventure and Clockie: Dreamjoy Memoir.

A notable NPC interaction takes place in the Clock Studios Theme park, where the player can a delicacy platter, where the character, Medium-Well-Done Cheese will say: "Don't break or wind back Hanu's clock! Don't touch a thing! What? It's the same... It can't be the same, either!" This phrase doesn't make any sense in English and fans have identified this may be because, in CN, the original sentence "哈努钟表不拆不逆" is structured in a way to actually represent fandom slang, and can be more accurately translated to say: "HanuClockie, do not break, do not reverse." This refers to the ship's name (HanuClockie) and says not to split the ship up and not to reverse the positions in the ship. In conjunction with this, and the fact that from the readable stories it can be seen that Mikhail and Hanunue, at one point, shared and room and a bed, many fans have speculated if this is Hoyo's way of nodding towards Mikhail and Hanunue's exceptionally close relationship.
