Mai was one of Haruka's groupmates when the latter was still a member of ASRUN. Mai joined the group after Haruka in hopes of becoming an idol like her. However, after three years Mai fell into a slump and felt out-of-touch with everything around her. Haruka insisted she keep practicing, which eventually lead to Mai damaging her vocal chords from overwork and being unable to sing. She then lashed out at Haruka for "giving her false hope" and begged her to give all of the time she wasted practicing back to her. Mai didn't realize how much those words impacted Haruka until the latter decided to retire, feeling she was not worthy enough for being an idol after all. Afterwards, Mai deeply regretted what she had said and wished to apologize to Haruka.
Mai first appears in MORE MORE JUMP!'s Main Story.
Main Story[]
In episode 13, Mai appears in Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy, where she finds Minori, Shizuki and Airi. The four then go to a restaurant where Mai explains how she needs to apologise to Haruka, and says that she's the reason haruka quit being part of ASRUN. Mai continues on saying that she really used to look up to Haruka adding that she thought Haruka was so cool, straightforward, and earnest, and that she was so happy when she got accepted into ASRUN. Mai tells the group that she later entered a slump, but Haruka encouraged her to continue singing which resulted in her being unable to hit high notes and damaging her vocal cords. Haruka visited Mai in the hospital where Mai ended up yelling at Haruka, calling her a liar for giving her false hope and pushing her too hard.
In episode 14, Mai admits that she really regrets what she said to Haruka, talking about how Haruka was her most important friend, but she still said those horrible things. The next day, Mai waits for Haruka on the rooftop of Miyamasuzaka Girls with the rest of MMJ. When Haruka finally arrives, Mai sincerely apologises to her, adding that she knows its probably too late for her to fix anything, and her voice ends up trailing off. Haruka asks Mai to look at her, and also apologises for pushing her too hard, and not being able to do anything when she suffered. Haruka tries to lie that it wasn't Mai's fault that she quit being an idol, but Mai sees through the lie and ends up apologising again. Haruka says that there's no reason for Mai to blame herself and thanks her for coming to see her. After Mai leaves, Haruka confesses that Mai was the cause for her quitting ASRUN, but she can't let her know that because she doesn't want Mai worrying over what happened.
Tied By Painful Hope[]
In episode 1, Haruka receives a message on her phone from Mai. Mai texts Haruka asking her about her evening, and says that she hopes Haruka can watch a show she's performing in. Haruka texts Mai to break a leg and wishes her luck. She has a flashback to what happened before, and thinks that Mai's doing really well now, Haruka ends up smiling to herself.
In episode 6, Mai texts Haruka again, hoping that she enjoys her show the next day. Haruka smiles and says she can't wait to see the show.
In episode 7, Haruka and the rest of MMJ feel happy after watching Mai's show. Mai calls out to Haruka, and asks her how things have been. Haruka responds saying MMJ has been running into a bit of trouble. Mai tells Haruka that she can always ask her for help when she needs it, but Haruka politely declines, saying that her problem's a little complicated. Mai says that she believes Haruka and MMJ can overcome any issue, because Haruka takes on every challenge with everything she has. Mai adds that Haruka worried about her when she was having trouble, and that she never shields away from anything, but when Haruka started struggling, Mai couldn't do anything to help. Mai continues saying she fully believes in MMJ and she knows they'll overcome their problems. Haruka then asks Mai what to do when feeling stuck, to which Mai smiles and replies that she would just continue trying, to spread hope to her fans, and begs Haruka to keep trying too.

Harumai is a huge rarepair. Aside from their extreme lack of interactions and the fact that Mai is nothing but a very minor side character, many have not forgiven Mai for what she said despite her apologizing and reconciling with Haruka in MORE MORE JUMP!'s Main Story.
