To revive my beloved…I must execute the contract of death.
—Nathaniel about Margaret, Chapter 46

Hawmitch is the het ship between Nathaniel Hawthorne and Margaret Mitchell from the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom.

Canon[]

Nathaniel and Margaret are former coworkers in the Guild. The two bicker and show annoyance towards one another, however, they care for each other immensely and fight alongside each other. We don't know much of their relationship off-screen, however we know Nathaniel is deeply in love with Margaret. It's presumed that Margaret shares the same feelings as she sacrifices herself to protect Nathaniel and ends up in a comatose state; Nathaniel himself states he was unsure why she sacrificed herself for him despite wanting to restore her family honor and glory.

Nathaniel's goal after being brainwashed to save Margaret. Nathaniel agrees to work with Fyodor under the agreement that Margaret gets cured. Fitzgerald states Margaret is the only one who can defeat Nathaniel, since she's the only thing he's after. Nathaniel's strong attachment to Margaret is what Fyodor used to start the Cannibalism.

The Guild Arc[]

During the onset of the three companies conflict, Nathaniel and Margaret arrive as "the package" from the Guild along with their fellow members Herman Melville, and Mark Twain. After defeating the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia, Hawthorne asks where Edgar Allan Poe and Louisa May Alcott are. Margaret answers that they stayed behind due to their shared fear of heights.

Later, Hawthorne and Mitchell are tasked to guard the S.S. Zelda during their replenishment. On a ship, Mitchell is seen to be giving orders, while Hawthorne sits and reads the Bible. He notices Mitchell staring at him and tells her to stop bothering him, as she is disrupting his conversation with God. Mitchell uses her ability to dismantle the pages in his Bible. Mitchell asks him if he has forgotten their purpose on the ship which is to make the S.S. Zelda safe to which Hawthorne retorts that she is the one who has forgotten. Hawthorne then speaks about his holy mission to pass judgment on those who have sinned. He then speaks the words "Let the enemy come in, in all their many numbers. They will compensate for their heinous acts with their very lives."

The two begin to glare at each other before they are interrupted by one of their subordinates that they found a letter in the cargo. Hawthorne snatches the letter which turns out to be from Mori. In the letter states Mori's intentions which includes eliminating the Guild's luxury liner and the lives of Hawthorne and Mitchell. After reading the letter Hawthorne asks his subordinates when they will be finished loading the cargo. He then tells them to get it done in 30 minutes. Mitchell and Hawthorne begin to argue when they get interrupted once again by a suspicious man. It turns out to be Motojiro Kajii but they did not take him seriously.

Kajii then explains what his ability really is which is that the lemon bombs can't hurt him and begins to bomb the entire ship. Mitchell and Hawthorne then escape. Hawthorne tells Mitchell that the letter is no prank and they still have two targets and enemies will start charging on them. They decided to use an emergency exit to which they met James L. to which Mitchell exclaims that he is still alive. But it turns out to be a dummy, filled with lemon bombs and Hawthorne yells at her to watch out. Hawthorne then uses his ability to protect her.

After successfully protecting both of them from the bombs, they were approached by their subordinates and tells them that the enemy has set traps across their escape route and any wrong moves can cost their life. Hawthorne then tells that they need to fend the enemy off and if he can block their enemy attack, then no ability user can defeat him no matter the number, to which reveals to be Mori's thoughts to what the Guild might be thinking. Out of nowhere, Mitchell and the subordinates were stabbed, much to Hawthorne's shock. Hawthorne was then stabbed by Akutagawa.

Suddenly, the blood on Akutagawa's coat became writings and surrounded Akutagawa. It restrained him. Hawthorne gets back up and tells Akutagawa that he is a soulless beast gnawing upon the flesh of the weak. Hawthorne then asks if Akutagawa has only fought will weak ability users before. Akutagawa replied in silence. Suddenly, Mitchell wakes up and uses her material weathering ability on Akutagawa, which made Akutagawa's coat crumble. As Mitchell struggles to stand up, she tells about that nobody cares about the war. She then turns to Akutagawa and loudly tells that she must reclaim her family's honor and she will not lose to him who knows nothing of defeat or humiliation. Akutagawa then mumbles and severely stabs Mitchell in the air.

Margaret sacrifices herself for Nathaniel by shields and hugging him.

Later, Hawthorne agrees with Akutagawa's words and the battle resumes. Hawthorne uses the blood from his finger to attack Akutagawa. Hawthorne keeps shooting attacks to Akutagawa. However, Hawthorne's neck was slashed by Rashomon. However, Hawthorne smirks and the blood from his neck turned into writings. Seeing this, Akutagawa summoned Rashomon Renmon-Agito and with the thought of Dazai, Akutagawa keeps pushing on forward and attacks Hawthorne. Just as Hawthorne was about to be attacked, Mitchell shields and hugs Hawthorne to save him from Rashomon. Hawthorne's eyes widen as they hit into the wall.

After the battle with Akutagawa, Hawthorne wakes up and is greeted by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, who explains that Margaret will probably not gain consciousness. Hawthorne laughs and calls her a foolish woman, recalling how she protected him at the last minute. Hawthorne wonders why she would do that if she wanted to restore her family's honor. Fitzgerald explains that she wanted to pay back a massive debt her family owned, though he thinks that her dream shall never happen now. Hawthorne suddenly gets up and blames Fitzgerald by saying that Fitzgerald is the one who took away Margaret's dream, upon which he vows to restore her honor for her and leaves.

Towards the end of the Guild war, Hawthorne is seen with Fyodor Dostoyevsky and has joined the Rats in the House of the Dead on the condition that he provide Margaret the treatment she deserves.

Cannibalism Arc[]

You spoke of reviving your beloved? So this is all for that girl’s sake? The one I defeated in that fatal port duel?
—Akutagawa questions Nathaniel on his mission to save Margaret

At some point in this arc, Fyodor erases Nathaniel’s memories of everything except his love for Margaret and his desire to save her. As a result, Nathaniel becomes a puppet for Fyodor’s Cannibalism plan to break down the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia.

In Chapter 64, while fighting Akutagawa, Nathaniel announces he will execute the contract to death, in order to revive Margaret. Akutagawa recognizes Nathaniel’s actions, and asks whether he is doing all this for Margaret’s sake. Here, Nathaniel has no recollection of the battle where Margaret was defeated.

Hunting Dogs Arc[]

Hawthorne has become a puppet for the Rats. But he only remembers that woman. The passion to save her lets him run about being unusually violent.
—Fitzgerald on Hawthorne and Mitchell in Chapter 64.

Quotes[]

For my beloved noble lady I will deliver death unto the enemy.
—Nathaniel on Margaret in Chapter 63.

Fanon[]

Despite of being a semi-canon ship, Nathaniel and Margaret do not have much content as ship or characters. The reasons are that they do not often appear in the storyline; the fandom often forgets about them. People began to ship the duo as they had a respectable and interesting dynamic of mutual dislike, however, it slowly developed and after Nathaniel was revealed to be in love with Margaret, fans began to fully ship them.

The small fan base of HawMitch shippers believe that the two will be canon, since the confirmation of their relationship would receive little backlash, considering the fact HawMitch has no rival ships other than Nathaniel x Fyodor which is mildly unpopular. Fans enjoy Nathaniel’s unwavering love for Margaret and her implied reciprocation, and fans often refer to them as names such as “Bible Dude x Wind Girl” and remember them by their bickering dynamic and Nathaniel’s feelings. Fans also liked the dynamic of Nathaniel and Margaret being reproachful around each other while deeply caring about each other.
