Hayabusa“The moon is beautiful tonight, Hanabi.”
Hanabi“I see the moon, Hayabusa.”
— Hayabusa and Hanabi's matching in-game voicelines

HayaNabi is the het ship between Hayabusa and Hanabi from the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang fandom.

Canon[]

Hayabusa is the second heir to the Shadow Sect of the Scarlet Shadow. To preserve the delicate balance of power between the Shadow and Scarlet Sects, Hayabusa willingly took his older brother's place to be a political pawn and hostage, to be raised within the rival Scarlet Sect. Every day spent in the Scarlet Sect, Hayabusa lived by his brother's principles.

In his first years at the Scarlet Sect, Hayabusa, as a pawn, was met with contempt. He found companionship only in his own shadow. During training, he constantly worked to integrate ninja tools with his ninjutsu, creating his unique Shadow Shuriken technique. Gradually, more and more people came to challenge him. Hayabusa calmly accepted each challenge and silently departed after each victory. For him, winning or losing mattered less than fulfilling his brother's will—ending the hostility between the two sects. Until one day, he met a girl whose convictions rivaled his own—Hanabi. As the successor of "Scarlet", Hanabi always held her head high. She saw her victories as victories for the Scarlet Sect, and her fierce competitive spirit drove her to challenge Hayabusa again and again.

Hidden valleys, bamboo forests, rooftops... Every corner of the Scarlet Shadow bore witness to their battles. Every time Hayabusa won, Hanabi, filled with resignation, would ask, "Why did I lose...", and every time all Hayabusa would do is shrug his shoulders and say, "Because...the moon looks lovely tonight."

While Hanabi would do whatever it took to be truly accepted by Higanbana, one of the ancient armament of the Scarlet, Hayabusa had long accepted that he possessed no extraordinary talent. In pursuit of his brother's nindo, he trained alone, until he finally understood that the relationship between ninja tools and ninjutsu was like that of scarlet and shadow—two sides of the same coin. They were inseparable. The Scarlet Sect and Shadow Sect surely knew this too, yet they chose to remain fixated on winning over each other.

Then, one day, the genius ninja Hanzo broke into the forbidden grounds, stole the sealed weapon Ame no Habakiri, and fled. Hayabusa's brother, who had gone with him, vanished without a trace. Overnight, Hanzo became the Scarlet Shadow's greatest threat, and peace teetered on a blade's edge.

To capture Hanzo and retrieve the cursed weapon, both sects dispatched their best, and both Hayabusa and Hanabi were among them. It was the first time Hanabi had fought with Hayabusa on the same side, and she was not about to miss this chance to redeem herself.

Hanabi tracked down Hanzo on her own, without any help from Hayabusa. However, upon locating Hanzo, he proved more pernicious than Hanabi had expected. Unable to withstand a frontal attack from the Ame no Habakiri, Hanabi found herself struggling to continue evading. She could feel herself slipping, and as the blade swept across her throat, she remembered the dark river of her nightmares—where Higanbana resides and unreachable.

She could not lose, just as Scarlet Sect could not. She had to win.

In swearing her undying allegiance to Higanbana, Hanabi offered her own body.

At the moment of death, an immense power swept Hanabi along like a raging tsunami, and at that moment she understood, Hanzo had sworn allegiance to Ame no Habakiri in exchange for this power. There was no time to reflect any further. Hanabi lunged towards Hanzo. Amongst a flurry of slashes, cuts, and stabs, Hanabi's vision began to blur, but she could make out her opponent stumbling backward. She had won! However, the waters began to surge forward, and she once again found herself submerged in that dark, familiar river.

Far from subsiding, the river instead raged with greater ferocity as monstrous waves crashed down one after the other, dragging Hanabi down to the bottom of the riverbed. Such was the fate of countless souls who had been sealed within this weapon. Every ounce of their pain and their resentment was transformed into an insurmountable power that enslaved all those who entered, keeping them forever entrapped within. This was the land of the dead, a land from which there was no escape.

"Win! Win! Win!"

The crashing waves resounded in her ears, the sound almost resembling a chorus. She struggled with all her might, but Hanabi was unable to extricate herself. That burning flower which had once been so far away was now so close, yet still, it remained out of her grasp. Bit by bit, she found herself sinking deeper...

During his pursuit, Hayabusa discovered Hanabi lying on the ground, surrounded by ninjas from both sects writhing in agony.

"Hanabi! Hanabi! Hanabi!"

The sound of Hayabusa's voice pierced through the void, bringing Hanabi back from the brink. Ignoring the souls of the dead clasping at her throat, she raised her head.

The moonlight reflected upon the surface of the river. It was beautiful.

As Hayabusa tried to wake Hanabi, a malevolent aura struck at him. He gripped his blade tightly. Then, he saw a familiar yet strange figure—it was his brother, radiating with murderous intent.

Hayabusa saw blood staining his brother's hands... He saw the light had vanished from his eyes...

No matter how Hayabusa called out, he was met only with increasingly violent attacks, each aimed to kill.

Never had Hayabusa imagined the moon could become so blood-red.

Darkness engulfed Hayabusa's heart. He lowered his blade as his brother rushed toward him.

"Hayabusa, don't you dare lose to anyone but me!"

Hanabi's voice echoed in his memory, like a flame igniting in his heart. Deep within, Hayabusa saw the moonlight, and beneath it, Hanabi's eyes burned as she looked at Hayabusa while gently twirling her Higanbana,

"I'm going to surpass you."

In that instant, Hayabusa regained consciousness. With one hand, he formed a seal, activating Quad Shadow to send forth four shadows that restrained his opponent with lightning speed. He gripped his blade and struck without a moment of hesitation.

Hayabusa watched as the murderous aura gradually dissipated along with his brother's image, revealing Ame no Habakiri's true form, glaring with rage and laughing maniacally. The cunning Ame no Habakiri had tried to use illusions to exploit the weakness in human hearts, only to encounter such resilience within.

Breaking free from the illusion, Hayabusa was no longer bound by the darkness. Even without the moon's guidance, a shadow must forge its own path.

"Wherever I shall go, I do so without fear."

As Hanabi gradually came to her senses, Hayabusa whisked her off, while Hanzo managed to escape. They were in no state to give chase, but this was but a mere setback, nothing more.

Higanbana rested gently inside Hanabi's hand. She had unlocked its secrets and become its owner. Free from her obsessions and inner demons, Hanabi was able to truly see Hayabusa, her former adversary, clearly for the first time. She finally understood what he had been telling her all along: there are things in this world more precious than winning.

While Hanabi was unsure exactly how to proceed, she also knew she no longer needed any guidance from others. No matter what direction she took, all roads led to her shore. Hanabi raised her head and looked up at the night sky.

"The moon was beautiful tonight."

Hayabusa's Mastery Code (2021)[]

Chapter 3: Hayabusa's Bond[]

"When Hayabusa was studying ninjutsu in his teenage years, he and Hanabi would lie upon the tall rooftops together and gaze at the moon at the end of each full moon competition. Sometimes Hanabi would shoot a glance at him, saying "I'll become the Scarlet leader". And Hayabusa would say, too: "I'll find that guy." Meanwhile, under the eaves, Kagura was holding her Seimei Umbrella waiting for Hayabusa's return..."

In the 2021 lore, Hayabusa and Hanabi are sparring partners and friends (with a rivalry on Hanabi's part) who will be married to each other upon reaching adulthood by the Scarlet Shadow elders if all goes well. Hayabusa always spends his time with Hanabi to spar and rest upon the tall rooftops to gaze at the moon at the end of each full moon competition. The competition itself was personally made by the two and it somehow became a silent convention between them. It was implied in Hayabusa's 2021 lore:

"As had become a convention, this was the night that he and Hanabi would test each other on the rooftops."

It is why, when Hayabusa caught wind that Hanzo had appeared beyond the Cadia Riverlands, and the day of the coming-of-age ceremony just so happened to coincide with the full moon's eve, he faced a dilemma: would Hanabi come to meet him on the full moon's eve?

Fanon[]

Hayabusa and Hanabi's alternate ship name "Scarlet Shadow" comes from their clan's name, implying that the two sects have finally united. It is also comes from Hayabusa and Hanabi's uniform nuances, with Hanabi's mainly scarlet and purple (Scarlet) while Hayabusa's mainly black and red (Shadow). It is also a wordplay from their aliases, where Hanabi is "Scarlet Flower" while Hayabusa is "Crimson Shadow".

In the fandom, the ship is often seen as a rival ship to HayaGura or Hayabusa x Kagura. The lore update in 2025 confirmed that this ship is canonically the official couple, with Hayabusa and Hanabi's relationship as "Childhood Sweethearts", while Hayabusa and Kagura's relationship as "Close as Siblings" (which was already implied since the 2021 lore). It is stated in a Dev-To-Players on the Official Discord Server regarding Hayabusa, Hanabi, and Kagura's relationship.

In Hayabusa's 2021 revamped lore, it is mentioned that Hayabusa sees himself as Kagura's big brother, while in Kagura's 2021 revamped lore, she sees herself as Hayabusa's little sister:

“He slowly grew used to living in a home now short a family member, grew used to being the big brother that would take care of Kagura.”
— Hayabusa's 2021 revamped lore.
“As Hayabusa's name left her mouth, the young girl that needed the big brother's help was no more.”
— Kagura's 2021 revamped lore.

Hayabusa and Hanabi's in-game relationship in the current lore:

There has been much speculation and controversy surrounding this ship, often regarding Hanabi's revamped lore (2022) of 'moving on from her obsession' being linked to her romantic feelings for Hayabusa and her jealousy to Kagura. While it is true that Hanabi was jealous to Kagura in the pre-revamped lore (2018), her coming to terms with herself and embraced her feelings and desires has nothing to do with it. In fact, her promotional revamp project posts explicitly stated that her obsessions are her victories and defeats, which are only tied to her competitions with Hayabusa.

Additionally, even after the Scarlet Shadow lore revamp in 2021, Hayabusa and Hanabi's relationship remained the same as before the changes—as childhood friends, sparring partners, and potential romantic partners—that eventually developed in the revamped lore in 2025 as childhood sweethearts with remarkable "two sides of the same coin" relationship trope.

Trivia[]

  • Hanabi and Hayabusa entrance quote Sanjou is a Japanese term that roughly translates to "I've arrived." or "I'm here." In the context of ninjas, "Sanjou" is often used as a declaration of arrival or a way to announce one's presence. It's a way for the ninja to assert their presence and let others know they're ready for action.
  • Hayabusa's new revamped voiceline "The moon is beautiful tonight, Hanabi"[1] is confirmed to be a romantic phrase. In its Indonesian dub ("Hanabi, kau lah belahan jiwaku"), the phrase means "Hanabi, you are my soulmate".
  • Hanabi and Hayabusa's lore is really connected to one another: same plot, different POV.
  • In Hayabusa's lore, Hanabi's voice echoed in his mind while he was in his lowest. Meanwhile, in Hanabi's lore, Hayabusa's voice echoed in Hanabi's mind while she was at her lowest, drowning in the dark river of her mind.
  • According to a Dev-To-Players on the Official Discord Server, Hayabusa and Hanabi will get a Valentine's skin in the future.[2]
  • Despite the lore difference between MLA and MLBB, Hayabusa and Hanabi are childhood sweethearts in both lore versions.
