- Whatever happens, I want Power and Denji to survive and be happy.
- —Aki in Chapter 74
Hayakawa Family is the friendship between Aki Hayakawa, Denji and Power from the Chainsaw Man fandom.
Canon[]
All three meet while working as devil hunters in Public Safety. When Makima pairs Denji up with his first partner, Aki Hayakawa, they have a very rough start. As long as they’re partners, Denji is forced to live at Aki’s place, sharing the living space and food with him. Soon enough, through Aki’s advice, Makima introduces Denji to Power, another devil hunter who is also a devil herself residing in human’s body (a fiend). At first, he thinks she’s a little crazy, and when she blames him for what she did herself in front of Makima, Denji is angered and deems her a liar. Power moves in with Denji and Aki and brings her cat Meowy with her, and now they live together, all four of them. They bond during their first mission as a team. When the devil promises to let everyone go if they give Denji to him, Power agrees (but just for fun, not for the fact that she wanted to leave), but Aki does everything he can to not let this happen. But later when Kobeni tries to stab Denji to kill him, Aki uses his own body to protect him, and as Denji sees his friend, he asks for Power to help him stop his bleeding. Power mentions that she finds hard to control other people’s blood, but still puts her hand on Aki’s wound to try and stop the blood from leaking. Eventually, Power warms up to Denji, and Denji starts showing that he cares about her despite the fact that she once tried to kill him (to rescue her cat Meowy). When the international hunt on Denji is on, Aki comforts Denji and tells him that one day the price over his head will be lifted and they will be able to live normally.
After the Darkness Devil’s attack, Makima suggests she and Denji take a business trip alone, just the two of them. She almost manages to seduce Denji, but he rejects her, saying he cannot leave Power, since after the attack she's always afraid and needs him by her side constantly. When Aki asks Denji why he didn’t go with Makima, Denji says that he doesn’t know. Aki is seen smiling. Aki and Denji decide to take turns watching over Power, they sleep in three hour shifts. When Aki goes to Hokkaido, he prepares meals for both Denji and Power so they can heat them up later while he is gone. The two protest and say they want to join Aki on his trip. They leave Meowy with Kishibe and get ready to go. During the trip Denji watches over Power, and Aki watches over both Denji and Power. They arrive at their destination and go see Aki’s family grave. Later they stay at an inn for the night. During their dinner, Power again refuses to eat her vegetables, and Aki offers to share her discarded food with Denji. Later, when Power is asleep, Aki admits to Denji that every year when he comes to visit his family’s grave his heart is filled with sadness, but this year he was with them, so he didn’t even have time to feel bad.
After the trip is over, Kibishe returns Meowy to Aki and calls it his cat. During his conversation with the captain, Aki asks if Division 4 can be withdrawn from the hunt for the Gun Devil. Kisihibe seems surprised, since taking part in taking this devil down was the only thing Aki had ever wanted. Kishibe says that even if they kill the Gun Devil without Division 4’s involvement, Aki, as its member, won’t have access to that information for it will be classified. Aki agrees to this condition nonetheless. When Kishibe asks about Aki’s decision, Aki remembers Denji and Power dead in Hell, and says it's his intuition. When Aki arrives home, he is greeted with a meal that Denji and Power cooked for him (stir-fry with bean sprouts, sausage, eggs, and soy sauce). Aki notices odd ingrediants in the dish, like tree branches, but eats it anyway. He vomits, and Power and Denji proudly proclaim that now all three of them have done that. After the dinner, Aki notes that Power stopped screaming in her sleep. Later Denji and Aki wash the dishes, and Aki says that he will resume working and asks Denji to look after Power. Denji assures him saying that they will be fine.
When Makima suddenly calls Aki, Denji, and Power to her, she announces that Aki can be discharced from the future operation, but she cannot let Denji and Power go. Aki is shocked, but when Power and Denji agree to participate, Aki asks Makima to let him join them, too. Sometime later the Future Devil reveals what is fated for Aki: Denji will kill him and Power. The next day, when Aki visits the Angel Devil in the hospital, his friend tells him they should go see Makima and ask her if she can help with Aki's death sentence. When they find her on the beach, Aki admits that he only wants for Denji and Power to stay alive and be happy. Aki tells Makima that he will make any contract with any devil to make this come true.
Later the Gun Devil kills Aki, takes control of his body and goes home to Denji and Power. Makima warns Denji about the Gun Devil over the phone, but doesn't tell him it's Aki's body that the devil is currently possessing. Power and Denji were waiting for Aki to come home and they hope that what Makima said is not true, and it is in fact Aki who is ringing their doorbell. Denji tells Power to take Meowy and run. Denji opens the door, and the Gun Devil calls him by his name, which surprises Denji since the devil doesn't know him. Aki, who is revived but controlled by the devil, imagines that he's having a snowball fight with Denji, like the one he would have with his younger brother many years ago.
Power doesn't believe that it really is the Gun Devil until she sees him with her eyes, because the scent in the doorway belonged to Aki and she was sure he'd come home alive. Aki imagines that Power joined Denji's side in their snowball fight, when in reality they fight to the death. Denji begs Aki to "wake up", but Aki, still playing, thinks that he's never had that much fun before. Denji in Aki's dream starts crying and Aki gives up, allowing his friend to kill him. After his death, Power and Denji find out that Aki left half of his money to Denji. He uses it to rent a new place for himself and Power. When Makima kills Power, she admits to Denji that it was all part of her plan — she had to make him as happy as possible and then take everything away, that's why she "provided him with a family". Losing Aki and Power mas meant, according to Makima, to make him want to "give up on this world" so he could turn into the real Chainsaw Man Devil.
Quotes[]
- “I provided a family that would get along with you. Aki became a good big brother to you, and Power — the bratty little sister.”
- — Makima to Denji, Chapter 82
Fanon[]
The friendship between Aki, Denji, and Power is well received among the fandom. The relationship is often interpreted as "found family" that Aki got after he lost his own, and since Power and Denji never really had theirs. In fan works Denji and Power are sometimes given Aki's last name, Hayakawa, since they don't have their own.
