- “Pointy ears, he's a bat. Backwards cap, these are facts. My heart is full to the Max.”
- — Hedgehog about Max, in a song she wrote about him
HedgeMax is the het ship between Hedgehog and Max from the Summer Camp Island fandom.
Canon[]
The Pilot[]
In the pilot, when Oscar and Hedgehog were discussing the plans for their annual best friends forever sleepover plans, Max briefly interrupts through Hedgehog's window, saying how he's looking forward to the party. With this, it is revealed that Hedgehog has also invited Max over, much to Oscar's dismay.
As Oscar gets progressively upset, even at the start of the day, he still tries to find the positives amongst everything. As Hedgehog and Max roll by on the carpeted floor, Hedgehog asks what's next on the list, to which Oscar excitedly remembers how it's to make banana split ice cream together.
The scene changes to the two making the bowl of ice cream, but after seeing Max doing it on the same table, Hedgehog decides to pay attention to him instead, while swooning. Next up, when the party goers are playing truth or dare, Max whispers the dare to Hedgehog who giggles shyly, revealing how the dare was for Oscar to down his soda in one go. Oscar continues to spectate the rest of the truth or dare game in defeat, as Max and Hedgehog continue laughing and having fun.
After Pajamas decides to break her promise and come to life at the party, she takes charge of Oscar's body, who was wearing the pajamas, and decides to feel Hedgehog's fur, mesmerized by how soft it is. Oscar starts fighting over the control over his own arm and accidentally punches Hedgehog, upsetting Max.
Oscar storms out the cabin and decides to hang by the pool, Hedgehog shortly joins him after but continues to gush about Max. Finally at his breaking point, Oscar reveals how annoyed he was all day, indirectly accusing Hedgehog of ruining his plans, which also angers her, all the while insulting Max's dancing.
She snaps back saying how she and Max just tried to show him how fun it was to hang out together at camp, and decides to go back inside and dance beside Max.
After Pajamas makes Oscar the life of the party, he notices Hedgehog was not responding to him, only to see her and Max outside under a dimly lit street light, holding hands while blushing. Pajamas comments on how she didn't know the two were into each other, while one of the bananas from before adds on, saying how it was "so obvious" before getting bitterly stepped on by Oscar.
The episode ends with an alien playing the xylophone, singing a song about Hedgehog doesn't like Oscar that way, and loves Max instead.
Main Series[]
Season One[]
In "The First Day", after finding out Oscar's homesickness made him escape the island and allegedly run back home, Hedgehog shows Max the potholders she made for Oscar, and confides in Max, saying how it was a waste.
In "Monster Babies", Hedgehog and Max agree to help Oscar build a water slide attraction in order to push through with his plan to get one of the camp counselors, Alice, to undo her magic spell she cast that made the island's monsters turn back into infants.
In "Chocolate Money Badgers", after Susie, the head camp counselor, sees through Oscar and Hedgehog's plan, she rushes over to put a stop to Oscar. While Hedgehog and the others helplessly wait nervously, Max is there to comfort her.
In "Pajama Pajimjams", Hedgehog and Max go along with Oscar to help and try to convince his Pajamas that the other pair of (inanimate) pajamas, Jimjams, is real through Oscar's ventriloquism.
In "Oscar and Hedgehog's Melody", after finding out how Oscar and Hedgehog were trying to revise their musical piece for Susie's rigged talent show, he asks Hedgehog why, to which she responds, saying how their original piece was causing the island to experience earthquakes. Max says he still prefers the original, and for them to push through, since he was confident they will best Susie at her own game.
In "The Basketball Liaries", Oscar finds out that Hedgehog, Max, and Alexa make up the pro-basketball team representing their camp and gets jealous and cheats his way into being good enough for their team.
In “Popular Banana Split", after Oscar excuses himself to find ways to turn himself into Hedgehog's test subject, Max stays behind as her lab assistant, until Hedgehog makes an accidental error, causing her chemical to spill on the two, turning them as small as finger foods. The two, while waiting for Oscar's return, discover a high school for anthropomorphic food and snacks that use a picnic basket as their school.
Hedgehog and Max are then accosted by the school's head student journalist, Cinnamon Toast, who asks them a favor, wanting to become cool (like Max) so her crush, Popular Banana Split - the school jock, would ask her out to prom. Hedgehog questions this, but after the two meet the crush in question, Hedgehog finally agrees, in which Max also agrees in helping her cause.
At the end of the episode, Max and Hedgehog partake in the high school's prom, dressing up formally, and witnessing Cinnamon Toast stand up for herself, as, after successfully becoming Banana Split's date, she is asked by him to follow him to his dream jock college where journalism is not allowed, much to her horror.
Cinnamon breaks up with him and thanks Max and Hedgehog for making her realize her own self-worth. This also makes Hedgehog realize what went wrong with her experiment, and after making a few tweaks, nests the test tube under Max's cap, as it briefly incubates on his head fur. She then successfully changes themselves back to their original size, much to Oscar's confusion.
In "The Haunted Campfire", Max and the rest of the campers are excited to hear Hedgehog's ghost story for the night, but a cowardly Oscar ends up becoming frozen with fear after they all find out the ghost stories they tell can become real. As Hedgehog carries Oscar to safety, Max calls out to her for them all to hide in the library. After they successfully get inside, Hedgehog, Max (and Oscar) cling into ech other in fear. Lucy then yells at them to "stop snuggling and help barricade the door".
Shortly after, Oscar is accidentally hit with a bookshelf pushed by Hedgehog, Max (and Lucy) hiding behind it. The gang move on to the next bookshelf to hide behind, as Hedgehog climbs on top of Max as they all huddle together in fear.
In "I Heart Heartforde", Max (and Mortimer) go watch Hedgehog (and Oscar) partake in a pumpkin-eating contest. But, seeing them overdo it made the former two feel nauseous.
In "Susie's Fantastical Scavenger Hunt", Susie gets sick of Oscar and Hedgehog's friendship and teaches them (mostly Oscar) to be independent of the other. She makes up a scavenger hunt and splits the campers into pairs, she pairs Lucy with Oscar, and Max with Hedgehog.
Throughout the entire hunt, Hedgehog was doing just fine, as halfway through, Max asks if he could swap hats with her sometimes, and she happily asks when.
As the campers soon figure out the things Susie made them look for are pretty much just earring backs, Max jokes to Hedgehog about Susie never having heard of clip-on earrings, as Hedgehog chuckles.
After the duo gets to the next item, unsurprisingly another earring back, they get led into an elf cave per Susie's instructions, where the tiny elves are square dancing. Max invites Hedgehog to dance and pulls her into the dance floor as she accepts happily.
As she asks if he's seen the earring back yet, he says no, but Hedgehog says she's having fun as they squaredance to another corner of the cave to search.
In "Mop Forever", Max brings over the plate of tiny sliders Alice cooked beforehand, as Hedgehog takes one. Later in the episode, Hedgehog helps turn Max and the rest of the campers back to normal after Alice turned them all into their costumes.
In "Campers Above the Bed", the episode starts with Hedgehog spectating Max weightlifting with a couple of the island's monsters, as well as an alien. She notes how he likes foreign cinema, as she swoons and turns to her diary. She doodles herself and Max with a heart enveloping them. She is interrupted by none other than Max himself, who pops up through the outside of her open cabin window. She is surprised and blushes, hiding her face halfway through her diary.
When he simply asks "How's it going?", the scene changes to Hedgehog's point of view, where it briefly shifts into a cinematic where everything about Max's physical appearance is enhanced with an aesthetic filter, while Hedgehog's eyes turn into hearts. She snaps back to reality and tries to call him a nickname, which she does awkwardly and immediately regrets, slumping back into her window couch.
Then comes Oscar, who comically is the complete opposite of Max, as he unintentionally shows how unathletic he is, tripping on the lightest barbel from earlier. He notices Hedgehog scribbling on her diary, which she keeps away from him. The Monster Under the Bed, Hedgehog's sassy and unfiltered roommate, goes through her unattended diary, commenting on how it's "disgusting but a real page-turner", adding on, how "something this disgusting should be put on display".
After Oscar and Hedgehog tail after the latter's roommate, they then find themselves in a sub-dimension accessible through the underside of Hedgehog's cabin bed. Despite her own uneasiness at the discovery, and seemingly a society of likeminded monsters who have an unhealthy obsession over her, she is grateful that she has not (yet) found a single area where her crush on Max is on full display.
After chasing her roommate to an auction over the diary in question, things spiral out of control, which leads to the roommate himself offering to get the two out of there. Much to Hedgehog's horror, they finally find a small room dedicated to her crush on Max, where some of the society members are singing the original song Hedgehog wrote about Max.
After Oscar seemingly gets the idea, he offers to close his eyes and ears while the three speed through the room as a detour, with the roommate commenting on how disgusted he still is at her crush. She horrifiedly gives Oscar a piggyback ride out.
In "Spell Crushers", it has been a while since Hedgehog became the apprentice of one of the camp counselor witches, Betsy, and she is practicing her focus. Betsy congratulates Hedgehog on her focus, adding on, saying how she'll reward her with her own wand if she manages to pass the test she has for her that night.
Returning back to the camp excitedly, Hedgehog finds Oscar and Max in her cabin, after they had a swim at Oscar's pool behind his cabin. As Oscar babbles on, Hedgehog tunes him out and has her attention turn to Max, who greets her. Her song from "Campers Above the Bed" start playing in the background as she basks in Max's pruny appearance, while imaginary hearts pop out behind him, as her own eyes turn into hearts once more. This is interrupted by a very pruny Oscar who shakes her back to her senses.
Oscar explains why he and Max were waiting for her in her cabin, stating how he recommended she knew a spell to smooth out their skins back. At the cost of Hedgehog's focus, the spell requires for her to hold the subject's hand while reciting a short phrase. She succeeds with Oscar but mentally combusts at how Max was the one to initiate the handhold.
She instead accidentally tosses out the contents of her beaker onto the cabin floor, creating a star-shaped hole on it. Come Max's turn, she messes up the phrase as the song starts playing in her head again, and her eyes into hearts once more. He asks a distracted Hedgehog if it worked, to no avail. Oscar then, unknowingly, starts rubbing it in, on how distracted Hedgehog is being, turning her face red in the process.
After Oscar incorrectly guesses that the reason Hedgehog was distracted, on top of her pulse raising, and her palms feeling clammy, was because she was "sick"; she agrees and kicks the two out. She starts panicking and tries to focus on getting her wand. She tries to do the de-pruning spell again, but the giant date she wanted to try it on turns into Max's face singing her song from her point of view. She drops the date to the floor in shock, as it keeps growing and explodes.
She decides to get her mind off things by playing basketball with the local monsters instead. After physically winning against the monsters, the basketball she had in hand starts morphing into Max singing again, much to her horror, she tosses the ball to one of the monsters, whose butt also turns into Max's singing face, now both Maxes singing the full song, alongside the ice cream of fellow camper Lem, turning into a third singing Max, followed by a caterpillar who sips on the ice cream drops, whose body turns into tiny Maxes. She runs away in horror and retreats to the island's lighthouse.
In the lighthouse, she asks Barb if she had any inventions she needed her help with, Barb says she wanted to make a dish consisting of eggs cooked in every style to fit in one plate. Hedgehog tried to visualize at first, until the food items morph into another Max, who blows her a kiss. She is knocked back and ends up sitting on the floor, imagining her hand is Max, and kissing it while repeatedly saying "Max, you're cute~".
Barb is disgusted at how "bad" she is at this point of her crush, and she confesses how she wants to be able to focus, too. She finally asks her for help, Barb then hands her a paper craft, saying how she needs to confess her feelings, so all the weight will be taken off her shoulders, regardless if he reciprocates or not.
She is then determined to push through with it, but then the scene follows with Hedgehog staring at her cabin ceiling while laying on her bed, all her confidence gone, telling herself she can't do it.
She decides to find alternatives, attempting to trick her brain, and converts a loose sock into a sock puppet of Max. She tries confessing to it, and imagines Max reciprocating, inviting her for shakes and to get married. She kisses the sock and tries to de-prune the date, in which she finally succeeds.
Later that night, Hedgehog excitedly goes to meet Betsy for her exam, Betsy notes saying how Oscar dropped out, with Oscar chiming in, showing how his mom essentially quarantined him, thinking Hedgehog really was sick.
Hedgehog says she was fine with it, not knowing the one who decided to cover for Oscar was Max himself, to which her whole world shatters, leading her anxiety to kick in again.
She tries reminding herself how "You and Max are in love, and it's boring now", repeatedly but to no avail. Betsy tasks for Hedgehog's first spell to turn Max's red cap into a blue one. She starts breathing heavily and ends up messing up the spell, turning Max's nose small.
She physically pushes Oscar (in a quarantine bubble) away, and firstly apologizes about the nose mishap. He says it's fine, and thinks he actually wants to keep it, she blurts out saying how his original nose "was cuter" before bringing up the courage to finally confess.
Oscar overhears this and responds in shock, while Max thinks for a bit, explaining how he thinks she is "super smart and cool" and how he "looks up to her". But, in no way does he return the feelings romantically. Hedgehog, bummed by the news, excuses herself and cries in her spell book. Betsy comforts her, and cheers her on, saying how "these things come and go".
Hedgehog finally gathers up the courage to face Max again, and passes the first trial of her test. Towards the end, the two remain close friends, while Oscar smugly thinks to himself how he's gonna tell his mom about the news, ending the episode.
In "Puff Paint", both Hedgehog and Max preferred to go inside and explore the world of Oliver's painting, making Oscar jealous.
In "The Great Elf Invention Convention", Hedgehog and Max are together with Oscar as they play with the island's fireflies. Later on, they decide to grab a midnight snack, but because the mess hall is closed for a private event, they decide to check elsewhere.
On the way back, Hedgehog's stomach growls and Max jokes about how it sounded like a motorcycle, he then playfully punches her arm, saying how he knows she still must be hungry.
Max insists they just sneak in from the back, as Hedgehog and Max stealthily sneak in, before Oscar ruins it and barge into the back door.
Later during the convention, after Oscar reveals the three caved into Bernadette's request of asking for an extra minute with the thinking hat, this disappoints Hedgehog and Max.
When Bernadette's sister explains how being the middle child is allegedly the hardest, Max agrees as he briefly shares his experience, too. Hedgehog tells him she didn't know he was also a middle child and tries to sympathize with him, as a result, letting Bernadette's sister have two extra minutes instead.
When Oscar slips up again, revealing to Barb Jr. about the extra minutes given to her younger sisters, Max and Hedgehog hears her side of the story and agrees how their older siblings always looked after them, too.
Because of Oscar's mistake, this makes the elf siblings fight over the hat, ripping it into shreds. As Oscar desperately tries to sew it back, Hedgehog and Max take it upon themselves to stall the council waiting at the mess hall.
The two decide to put on a shadow puppet show instead, but Max says how he sucks at it. Hedgehog tells him to improvise, leading to the two telling a made-up love triangle story between a bear, Max's thumb, and Max's elbow.
In "Twelve Evil Hedgehogs", one of Hedgehog's clones bumps into Max and starts carrying him off bridal style elsewhere.
Season Two[]
This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
In "Tub on the Run", Hedgehog and Oscar are helping out Blanche in delivering the daily papers to their fellow campers, as Hedgehog takes it upon herself to deliver Max's as she finds it creepy how Blanche and Oscar admitted they only liked doing the job so they could sneak a peek on the others' cabins.
Max invites Hedgehog over to read the classifieds with him at his cabin, and Oscar stops Hedgehog, reminding her how this would be the first time they would hang out alone since she confessed her feelings and got rejected by him, making her nervous.
She awkwardly sits next to Max on his bean bag cushion, but her nervousness quickly fades away as the two slip into casual conversation while reading the papers. They come across an anonymous request, asking to help find their missing bathtub that ran away from home.
Max tearfully wishes the owner would find their lost bathtub soon, to which Hedgehog suggests they first figure out who put out the ad in order to help them. She takes them both to Heartforde to find out more about the anonymous person.
They reach the Heartforde press and ask Paulette if she knew who sent the ad, she says she can't as it is anonymous, and gives them a map of the half of the island where the zip code of the ad came from instead. But, Paulette briefly stops Hedgehog and reminds her the same thing, echoing Oscar's words. Hedgehog brushes it off, slightly annoyed, as she and Max head back to the island.
The two soon find the lost bathtub as it notices them and runs away. The two chase after it only to be outrun by the tub. As they take a short break in the forest, Puddle and King also echo Oscar and Paulette's sentiment as the two aliens watch Hedgehog and Max from a tree branch. Puddle suggests to make it weirder and to ask Hedgehog about it, as King whisper yells the same question.
Hedgehog, annoyed again, mumbles under her breath, wishing the alien couple would just go home, giving her an idea as to where the tub might have run off to. They run off to Mrs. Goose's house and ask to see her bathroom, to check if the bath tub ran there, the two bump into Oscar taking a break in her living room.
He stops Hedgehog and asks how things were going, she brushes him off and the two go to her bathroom. They are only met with a bathroom floor filled with rubber ducks to which they ask to take with them, Max helps Hedgehog gather them into her bag.
They decide to get sandwiches on the way and think where else the bath tub could have gone. She thinks if they use the rubber ducks as a signal, it would attract the bath tub. They then play around with the toy ducks, dancing about and stepping on them, making a ruckus, which effectively works as the tub runs towards them.
They try to take ahold of it but it tries to run them off its back, but Max and Hedgehog quickly tie it down with a vine. The tub runs away as it sprays the two with bathwater. Hedgehog recognizes the soap as the one Alice uses and figures out who the tub's owner is.
They rush over to Alice, who is singing a ballad about a run away tub, proving Hedgehog right. They hear the story about the tub and suggest she get a stand-up shower instead. Alice stops Hedgehog, and also echoes the same sentiment as everyone else from before, while Max seemingly stays oblivious.
Hedgehog herself brings it up with him, and he says it wasn't weird to him either. The two laugh saying how they're thankful they're still friends. The bath tub agrees as it appears behind them, it confesses how it wishes to go back to Alice, as Max and Hedgehog help it get taken back by Alice.
Fanon[]
HedgeMax is Hedgehog's second most popular pairing, following Hedgescar (Hedgehog x Oscar), as most fans of the show would prefer to ship Hedgehog with her closest friend. Though, supporters of HedgeMax would prefer Hedgehog and Oscar remain as they are - platonic with a close bond, and specially since Oscar has a tendency to ignore her boundaries, and let his temper and selfishness get the best of him, whereas many also see Hedgehog acting as his more mature, coolheaded, and rational sibling.
Despite the argument presented by Hedgescar shippers, Hedgehog canonically does not and never have had any romantic feelings towards Oscar, compared to the contrary, wherein she does have a canonical one-sided crush on Max, despite the fact that the crush in question seemingly came out of nowhere prior to the episodes focusing on it.
Hedgescar also rivals the likes of Mascar (Max x Oscar), though the latter is seemingly a small ship compared to the other two.

- While in the main series, Hedgehog and Max are both eleven years old, and both have an older sibling, with Max having an older sister, and Hedgehog having an older brother, respectively.
- Hedgehog is a science geek who is also great at sports, while Max is a friendly jock. They love spending time together, and are two of Oscar's best friends.
- Hedgehog's cabin flag symbol is a book, while Max's is a skateboard.
- Hedgehog and Max both wear hats as part of their everyday attire. Hedgehog's is a cone hat while Max's is a backwards-worn cap.
- Both Hedgehog and Max also wear long-sleeves as part of their default attire. Max's is a hoodie jacket, while Hedgehog's is a sweater.
- Hedgehog and Max also share their similar default hairstyle/bangs.
- Hedgehog is also revealed to not completely put him on a metaphorical pedestal, as she also draws the line when Max (and Alexa), during "Saxophone Come Home", indirectly bully Oscar for having a tendency to trip over nothing when in the mess hall. She retorts by calling them out, to which Alexa and Max agree how it was just "a harmless joke".
- Incidentally, this is the only episode where Max (and Alexa) act out of character.
- It is worth noting how her feelings for Max is the first secret she has never openly shared with Oscar, her closest best friend, and only told him hesitantly after her roommate went off with her diary.
- The episode focusing on Hedgehog's crush on Max, "Spell Crushers", is a reference to how the episode's two coinciding plots focus on Hedgehog's witch test and her crush on Max.
