HiguNana is the slash ship between Hiromi Higuruma and Kento Nanami from the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom.

Canon[]

In the canon narrative, Higuruma and Nanami's paths never cross, as Nanami's demise occurs prior to any opportunity for their encounter. However, in the early drafts of Jujutsu Sousen (a prototype to Jujutsu Kaisen) both characters were present and meant to join the Culling Games. The storyline depicts Nanami overwhelmed by his corporate role, facing excessive work and unjust criticism from his higher-ups. This unhealthy environment leads him to a breaking point, resulting in a violent outburst where he eliminates his office colleagues and declares his resignation to a room of corpses. This plotline bears resemblance to Higuruma's arc in the Culling Game Arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, where he experiences a similar snap, taking the lives of a judge and prosecutor in a courtroom after a miscarriage of justice due to corruption. It's suggested that even in the prototype, Higuruma's narrative involved a lethal outcome.[1]

Nanami and Higuruma not only share a common sense of morals and justice but also have somewhat similar personality traits. Nanami's experience in the business world and Higuruma's experience as a public defense attorney both took a toll on their mental health. Despite these parallels, their backgrounds diverge significantly; Nanami was born as a sorcerer, whereas Higuruma was not. Additionally, Higuruma's mental breakdown led him to commit a serious crime which took the lives of non-sorcerers; a judge and a prosecutor, actions that Nanami is known not to approve of and has never taken himself. Nevertheless, Higuruma carries a profound sense of remorse for his actions and has expressed a desire to be held accountable.

Shinjuku Showdown Arc[]

As Sukuna inflicts a potentially lethal blow on Higuruma, the lawyer, while he is falling from the injury, casts a final glance at Yuji, entrusting the battle to him. Yuji, recalling Nanami’s last words, gazes upon Higuruma and, in contrast to his last encounter with Nanami, does not freeze and acts decisively in attempt to defeat his enemy.[2]

In a twist of fate, Higuruma survives the ordeal, unlike Nanami during his own battle in Shibuya Incident Arc. His survival leads to an unexpected turn in his life; he is designated as a sorcerer, which not only spares him from a possible death sentence for his crimes, but also reflects Nanami's transition from the corporate role to that of the sorcerer. Although in Nanami's case, he initially pursued a career as a sorcerer before leaving it behind. However, he eventually returned to his roots after deeming his corporate position to be equally unsatisfying, ultimately opting for what he considered the lesser of two evils.

Fanon[]

While HiguNana may not be the most prominent pairing within the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom, it holds a significant place as one of the most favored ships for Higuruma and ranks within the top ten ships for Nanami. Although, it retains the charm of a rarepair among the fans. The fanbase quickly picked up on the parallels between Higuruma and Nanami, cherishing both characters deeply. This affection sparked the creation of alternative universes where the two could have met, with Nanami still alive. The narrative often extends to Yuji, who is portrayed as a familial figure to them, sometimes either as a son or a nephew due to Yuji’s good relationship with them both in the canon story.

The ship enjoys a steady stream of both old and new fan-made material, thanks to its dedicated following. On platforms like AO3, HiguNana has a collection of over 130 fanfictions. Pixiv showcases a minimum of 56 pieces of fan art and 50 fan novel series, accumulating more than 380 written fan stories in total. Social media sites such as Twitter and Tumblr also host a considerable number of fan creations dedicated to HiguNana.

In terms of rivalry, HiguNana is primarily rivaled by KusaHigu, another popular Higuruma ship. From Nanami's side, NanaGo stands as a formidable rival, being even far more popular than HiguNana. However, this has led to the creation of polyships such as KusaHiguNana and HiguNanaGo.
