HisoMachi is the het ship between Hisoka Morow and Machi Komacine from the Hunter x Hunter fandom.

Canon[]

In the early events of the series, Hisoka and Machi are both members of the Genei Ryodan. Though Hisoka is only pretending to be a member, he attends the meetings and is believed by the rest of the Ryodan to be a proper member.

Hisoka and Machi are seen interacting for the first time during the Heaven's Arena arc. Hisoka fights an old challenger of his, Kastro, at the arena and defeats him. During the fight, both of Hisoka's arms are amputated, so he hires Machi to sew them back on for him. Machi, who had watched the fight, complements Hisoka on a great match, though she also calls him an idiot for winning so recklessly. After Machi uses her nen ability to fix Hisoka back to normal, he complements her ability, saying that it always impresses him to watch her work and that, in the future, he may get himself hurt more on purpose just for the pleasure of seeing her ability again. Hisoka uses his own nen ability, Texture Surprise, to cover the stitches on his arms so they aren't visible, and Machi is seen to be impressed by Hisoka's abilities as well. Before leaving, Machi warns Hisoka not to overdo himself while he's still healing, and conveys the message that the Ryodan will have their next meeting in Yorkshin. Hisoka asks her to spend the night with him, and she reponds by slamming the door on him as she leaves the room.

On her way to Yorkshin, Machi is asked by Franklin whether or not Hisoka is coming to the meeting. She responds that she doesn't know, and Franklin asks her, "It's your job, isn't it?" — implying that her teammates consider her to be the closest member of the Ryodan to Hisoka. Later, after Uvogin is killed by Kurapika, the Ryodan decides to hunt Kurapika down by infiltrating the Cemetery Building. Machi is forced to partner up with Hisoka, which she shows some frustration with while Hisoka appears pleased. They are seen working together to kill members of the mafia.

During the Greed Island arc, Machi enters Greed Island with other members of the Ryodan to find a nen exorcist, in order to remove Kurapika's Judgement Chain from Chrollo's heart. Hisoka is also on the island because he was personally asked by Chrollo to find the exorcist on Greed Island. Searching for the same thing, Hisoka and Machi inevitably reunite. While they scout the exorcist together, Machi asks Hisoka if he really will fight Chrollo, to which Hisoka says yes. He asks her who she would rather see win, and she responds that it's a pointless question — "You can die after this mission for all I care." Hisoka then asks what she will do if he kills Chrollo, and Machi responds, "That will never happen... but I will answer you. I will hunt you down, and I will kill you!" Hisoka then says, "I'd like that," in response to her threat.

After the end of the Chimera Ant arc, Hisoka and Chrollo finally fight each other at Heaven's Arena. Hisoka is apparently killed by Chrollo in the battle. Along with Shalnark and Coltopi, Machi observes the aftermath of Hisoka's body. When her teammates move to leave, she states that she'll take a moment to stitch him back up, since he paid her in advance. At this Shalnark comments that, despite Machi's cold exterior, inside she's truly a kind person. Machi tells Hisoka that she's doing him this last service as a thank you for helping with Chrollo's nen exorcism. Before she can start her work, Hisoka revives himself with his post-mortem nen (basically he stabbed himself with his fingers before dying and then after death, his nen squeezed his heart back to beating). He greets her cheerfully, and Machi scolds him lightly, saying that next time he should choose the opponent and location of his next fight more carefully. She offers to stitch him up which he turns down, choosing to heal and cover his wounds with his own nen ability. Seeing that he doesn't need her services, she moves to leave. Before she can though, Hisoka embraces her and uses the moment to immobilize her with his Bungee Gum. He tells her his new plan to eliminate the Ryodan one by one, asking her to pass the message on to the rest of her teammates. Furious, she threatens to kill him herself "right now" and he taunts her by saying, "Taking my love for granted?" He encourages her to try and free herself from his ability.

Later on the Black Whale, Machi meets with Chrollo and announces that she will be the one to kill Hisoka. However, Chrollo points out that every member of the Ryodan wants to kill Hisoka, due to the fact that Hisoka had killed both Shalnark and Coltopi, making good on his promise to start going after the Ryodan. Instead, it is agreed that whoever finds Hisoka first will have the right to kill him.

Fanon[]

HisoMachi is a reasonably popular ship within the Hunter x Hunter fandom. Their first interaction together took place early on in the series and throughout serialization, they have been shown to have a complicated and tense relationship, albeit with romantic undertones. Fans of this pairing cite Hisoka's attraction to Machi as a strong basis for this ship, and in fanon, Machi is often portrayed as a tsundere who pretends to dislike Hisoka's affection while secretly enjoying it and reciprocating with her own feelings. Some fans of this pairing also speculate about Hisoka and Machi's history together, pre-canon, since their canon interactions suggest that they could have been romantically involved in the past, though this is unconfirmed.

This ship rivals HisoIllu, HisoKuro, HisoGon and sometimes PakuMachi, though ship wars are rare. It is the fourth most written ship for Hisoka on AO3, and the most written het ship for him. It is the most written ship for Machi.

Trivia[]

  • Hisoka's line to Machi in chapter 55 of the manga, "Anyways, tonight. What would you say of staying with me...?" was changed in both anime versions to, "By the way, how about dinner with me tonight?"
  • Tumblr user hxh1999caps performed an analysis of Hisoka's use of suit symbols in his speech, from all chapters of the manga published up to April 2019. It was determined that Machi "has the MOST favorable use of hearts from Hisoka, especially earlier in the series."
  • In an interview about the fight between Chrollo and Hisoka, Togashi stated that Hisoka wanted to kill Machi during the scene where they are together, right after he revived himself. However, Togashi vetoed this idea.
