Hitoshi is a student from the Class 1-C, one of the general education courses. His personality is cold and stoic, and he shows signs of not sleeping well. After his fight with Izuku Midoriya during the Sports Festival, he decided to still keep training to join the hero course, like he had always wanted to. Shota Aizawa, the teacher of Class 1-A, took an interest in him due to Hitoshi reminding Shota of his younger self, and decided to start training him on his own. By the Joint Training Arc, Hitoshi is allowed to participate with the hero course students. Although he doesn't intend on making friends, by the end of the exercise Hitoshi seems to have developed a bond with Izuku, as well as Denki Kaminari of 1-A and Neito Monoma of 1-B.
