Hizzie is the femslash ship between Hope Mikaelson and Lizzie Saltzman from the Legacies fandom.

Canon

Prior to Legacies, Hope and Lizzie first met as children, and were first shown interacting in The Originals when Lizzie alongside her twin sister Josie used their siphoning powers to save Hope from The Hollow.

At the start of Legacies, Hope and Lizzie are not close despite having known each other for most of their lives. It is revealed in There's a Mummy on Main Street that their mutual dislike of one another was due to Josie having lied to each in turn when they were children about Lizzie having set Hope's room on fire, and Hope having made fun of Lizzie's bipolar disorder, to ensure that Lizzie wouldn't get too close to Hope given her apparent history of 'winning' the people Josie crushed on. Another point of context is that Lizzie's father Alaric idolizes Hope as a heroine, and Lizzie had long desired to be seen as one too by him causing some degree of envy. This dislike of one another does not last however, and the two become friends following events such as saving the school from an arachne together alongside Josie. For much of the show's run the pair are depicted as being good friends and often team up with Josie to defend the school, their family and their friends from all manner of creatures and enemies.

In season one, World Where Your Dreams Come True, Lizzie makes the impulsive wish for Hope to have never come to the school when she discovers a Jinni in her room, in the hopes that if the other girl had never attended the school then her father Alaric would devote more of his attention to the twins. Through a series of wishes attempting over and over to achieve the desired effect, Lizzie ends up realizing the importance of Hope in both her own life and the lives of those around her, and begs to be able to keep her memories and understanding of this when reality is corrected but is denied. Although she loses her memories of these events, having been taken back to the moment before she made her first wish, Lizzie still instinctively knows something is different and is shown to appreciate Hope more. It isn't until season two that Hope and Lizzie's relationship truly sees significant improvement: a sign of this being when Hope's existence was erased Lizzie became the first to have shown signs of remembering she exists by calling out Hope's full name, and insisted that Hope's claim that the world was better off not knowing her wasn't true. Lizzie furthermore destroys the bracelet belonging to the Keeper of the Labyrinth dimension she and Hope are trapped in, after it is discovered that Hope would not be set free but instead be killed by the minotaur hunting down anyone not in possession of the bracelet.

Their relationship shifted from being friends to being enemies once more after Hope turned off her emotions and subsequently attacked Lizzie's father Alaric: placing his body in the ICU and mind in Limbo. Fearing what Hope will do to more of their friends, Lizzie works on a way to end Hope for good using the Red Oak tree fragments to make stakes and refuses to allow anyone else too close to Hope. This mission leads Lizzie to consume vampire blood from the school's supplies which turns out to be Hope's blood, and after trying and failing to switch Hope's humanity back on with a desperate confession of love, Lizzie is killed and accidentally sired to Hope. While both vocally dislike this arrangement and often try to kill one another, they're proven to be an effective team as seen in Follow The Sound of My Voice. At the end of episode 12, Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost, it is Hope who is left betrayed and surprisingly emotional after Lizzie was able to resist her order to kill Aurora and subsequently leaves with the other vampire to go on a wild mission to awaken gods. Being forced to help Hope torture Aurora made Lizzie realize that the Hope she knew was gone, and she might be able to bring her back through the use of the gods.

Fanon

Following Lizzie's transformation into a Heretic, and the reveal that she is sired to Hope in The Story of My Life, there has been heated debate among the fandom about what type of sire bond the women share, given the specific nature of Lizzie's transformation and her words prior to being killed by Hope, and what that bond might mean for Lizzie's feelings towards Hope and thus whether or not the ship would be considered semi-canon or not. Previous established lore of sire bonds, excluding those between Klaus or Hope and their werewolf hybrids, is that they are formed when the sired had romantic feelings for her sire as a Human; this combined with Lizzie's lines prior to the bond being formed and later on in the season, makes a strong case for semi-canon. During a fan Zoom meet and greet, Danielle Rose Russell was reported, by a fan of the ship Hosie, to have stated that she played the sire bond as romantic and this was corroborated by other fans, however citation is needed.

While there has been much praise for the introduction of a much requested Heretic story-line: many fans of the ship Hosie are opposed to this plot-line and believe it should have been between Hope and Josie instead, had Kaylee Bryant not departed from the show. Many fans of the story-line countered this by highlighting that symbolically, Lizzie had always made the most sense for the Heretic story-line: particularly given that the prominent Dark Josie story-line had already occurred and the narrative balance between the twins thereof. Of the two, Lizzie was most connected to their vampire mother Caroline: she felt no connection to Jo and did not recognize her in Mombie Dearest. On the other hand, Josie was consistently shown being closer to their witch mother Jo, whom had been quoted condemning Heretics in The Vampire Diaries, immediately recognized Jo, and had a featured story-line with Jo's brother Kai, which Lizzie did not.

The debate among fans on whether or not Lizzie's confessions of love- first in "I Can't Be the One to Stop You" and again in "Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost"- were that of romantic or platonic context have been at the center. Some fans cited instances where the writers and actors referred to their bond as being sisterly, while others posit that the scenes felt grossly inappropriate for a familial bond. On Hope's side, fans are similarly in disagreement on whether or not her interactions with Lizzie indicate that her emotions might be turning back on or filtering back in, given her behaviors in recent episodes such as rescuing Lizzie after declaring their partnership over, and being drawn to near tears when discussing Lizzie's betrayal to a driver, who she fed on in the finale of episode 12.

• Hope and Lizzie are only the second example of an emotional vampire sire bond in all of The Vampire Diaries history, after Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert.
