Honami“I've been talking your ear off, haven't I...?”
Kanade“No, it's okay. I'm not much of a talker, and I like hearing about what you do, Mochizuki-san.”
— "This Spring, With You..." first side story

Honakana is the femslash ship between Honami Mochizuki and Kanade Yoisaki from the Project SEKAI fandom.

Canon[]

Kanade is a third-year high school student attending online classes while Honami is a second-year student at Miyamasuzaka Girls Academy. While Kanade is unable to take care of herself, Honami's special skill is looking after and taking care of others. Once a week Honami comes over to Kanade's house to work as a housekeeper. Honami, who works part-time for a housekeeping agency (which was recommended to her by her mother's friend), was hired by Kanade's grandmother through the same agency, as she (Kanade's grandmother) couldn't take care of the half-orphaned Kanade despite her wishes due to her old age. The two have a professional but friendly relationship, and call each other with their surnames and honorifics (Yoisaki-san and Mochizuki-san, respectively). They often confide to each other, and Kanade tends to ask her for advice.

Initial Cards[]

In Honami's initial 2* second side story, Leo/need is walking home from school and Saki asks if they could go to the arcade, but Honami turns down her invitation saying she needs to go to work. Honami checks her text messages, then tells herself she needs to visit the supermarket as Kanade requested both cooking and cleaning. The next day everyone in Leo/need asks what Honami does for work, and she tells them how she's a housekeeper. Ichika says she remembers Honami used to volunteer at a care home, which in turn made Honami realize she loves taking care of people. When Honami says her employer's a girl who's only a year older than everyone in Leo/need, Shiho curiously asks for more, but Honami apologizes and says she wants to respect Kanade's privacy. She then thanks them for worrying about her, and Honami thinks to herself once more, how she can't introduce Kanade to the others but would love it if they all got an opportunity to meet someday.

In Kanade's "Beyond The Screen..." card's first side story, Honami comes over for work again and asks Kanade what she thought of the dinner she had made. Kanade compliments it saying it was delicious and then mentions she had barely eaten anything. Honami tells her that she needs to eat properly and then mentions she had also bought apple pie with her. Honami offers to make some tea as well and while eating the dessert together, Kanade thinks to herself how Honami's eyes seem sad despite her smiling. After a bit of thinking, Kanade asks Honami if she has ever thought of wanting to disappear, and Honami hesitantly mentions she has thought about it sometimes. Honami then in return asks if Kanade has done so too, and then apologizes for it. Kanade tells her to not worry about it as she was the one who initiated the topic. Honami then asks how Kanade copes when having said thoughts, and Kanade mentions that she composes songs. The story ends with Kanade thanking Honami for both the tea and apple pie and saying she'd love to have it again.

Imprisoned Marionette[]

The two are shown interacting Chapter 2 as Honami comes over for work and Kanade asks her to clean the kitchen and bathroom. Honami then mentions that she bought some flavored teas with her and how she'll prepare some tea after she's done cleaning. Kanade goes back to working on her song and thinks how having Honami around has increased her work efficiency. Honami calls Kanade back to the kitchen, and then the latter compliments the tea with a smile on her face. Honami says she feels relieved upon seeing Kanade's smile, and Kanade proceeds to call Honami an amazing person for caring about her so much. Honami is caught off guard but then claims she just likes doing housework so much and enjoys the part-time job. Kanade then proceeds to ask for advice about situations where she doesn't know what to do in order to help the person she's trying to help (in Kanade's case, Mafuyu). Honami advises her to listen to what the person has to say, and even if the person themself doesn't understand how they want to be helped, then she should listen to her even more and get to know her better. She explains that knowing and understanding that person's feelings can be quite helpful itself, as some people try to carry all of their burdens on their own. Honami then apologizes, feeling unsure of the advice she just gave, but Kanade assures she did well and Kanade promises she'll get to know her (Mafuyu) better. Just as Honami is about to leave, she asks Kanade if she is interested in dolls and then offers her tickets to a doll exhibit. Honami mentions it being hosted nearby the hospital where Kanade's father is in, so Kanade could drop by there on her way back home, and how it could even give Kanade some inspiration for her songs. Kanade accepts the tickets with a smile and they then bid farewell to each other.

In Kanade's "Lifelike" card's first side story, Honami starts cleaning again and promises to come and tell Kanade when she's finished brewing tea. While at the dinner table, Kanade points out the tea has a different fragrance and proceeds to compliment it, with Honami saying she's glad Kanade finds it delicious. When Honami asks what Kanade wanted to talk about, she thanks Honami for giving her the tickets to the doll exhibition as it helped her understand the person she mentioned before. Honami then denies doing anything special and says she's glad the tickets came in handy. Kanade then asks if Honami gave her the tickets so she could create an opportunity to talk with her [Mafuyu], and Honami apologizes for being a busybody, but Kanade tells her not to worry and how she's glad she went to the exhibition. Honami asks if she can meddle one more time before telling Kanade to never give up on that friend of hers, as "she's waiting for that someone who will never stop trying to reach out to her." Kanade thanks her and promises she'll keep trying until one day, she can save Mafuyu.

Singing Among the Cherry Blossoms[]

In Kanade's "This Spring, With You..." card's first side story, Kanade's work is interrupted by Honami calling her to the kitchen for dinner. Kanade notices she's carrying around a bottle with a sakura tree branch in it, and Honami tells her she saw some children accidentally break it off, and how she felt it was a shame to just leave it around because it was close to blooming. Kanade thinks how she didn't realize just how kind Honami is before asking if the flowers will really bloom as she points out that the branch is really thin. Honami tells her about a trick she found online, and Kanade calls her a superwoman for being able to do household chores as well as gardening. Kanade reminisces about the time she went to see the sakura trees with her parents, and then asks Honami if she could show her the branch again if it manages to bloom. A week later a joyful Honami arrives at Kanade's house and shows Kanade that her [Honami's] hard work paid off as the flowers (minus one) managed to bloom. Kanade asks if she could lend it, and Honami tells her she's free to have it as Honami was planning on setting it somewhere in Kanade's room after it had bloomed anyway. When Kanade asks if she's sure, Honami brings up that she had brought extra fertilizer and water in order to keep it alive longer. Honami tells Kanade that she sensed it may mean more to her [Kanade] because she had a really gentle look in her eyes after she looked at it. Kanade stands in a daze, and when Honami apologizes and asks if she's assumed too much, Kanade thanks her, tells her she'll take good care of it and brings the bottle to her father at the hospital, saying a very good friend of hers gave it to her.

In the second side story, Kanade thanks Honami for giving her the sakura tree branch and despite it starting to wilt out, she managed to what she wanted - to show it to the person she wanted to show it the most. Honami smiles and says she's happy she managed to help. Kanade then nods and with a smile on her face, thinks how thankful she is.

Carnation Recollection[]

The two interact in both of Kanade's card story episodes. In the first side story, which takes place after the first chapter of the event, Kanade is furiously trying to compose songs after being disappointed over Mafuyu not reacting properly to her latest song, before being interrupted by her stomach growling. She starts preparing her cup noodles but becomes immersed in composing. Later, Kanade lets Honami inside and the latter asks if Kanade was in the middle of eating dinner (referring to her cup noodles). Kanade realizes she completely forgot about it and Honami, shocked, rushes over to Kanade's kitchen when Kanade reveals she hasn't eaten nor drank anything for over 12 hours. After eating, Kanade compliments Honami fro being able to turn soggy noodles into an actual dish. Honami, worried, reminds Kanade to take care of herself. Kanade mentions the flower Honami had brought with her and they talk about one of her childhood friends knowing a lot about flowers. After a bit of reminiscing, Kanade asks if she could add Honami bringing flowers with her as one of the "extra cleaning" options in her contract. Honami says she doesn't have to but Kanade insists, and Honami promises ask that friend of hers for more advice on flowers.

In the second side story, which takes place after the final chapter, Honami brews some fruit tea for Kanade, who thanks her with a smile. Kanade thinks to herself how she only intended for Honami to cook and clean for her, but now tea brewing has also become part of the routine. Honami then shows Kanade the flowers she had promised to bring and starts explaining the meaning they have. When Kanade thanks her for putting so much thought into choosing the flowers, Honami denies doing anything special and how she learnt of them from her childhood friend. Kanade then asks if Honami could thank that friend of hers, and Honami promises, before also mentioning that Kanade can request Honami to do anything as she wants to help her in any way she can. Kanade then says she's happy that Honami was the person chosen to be her caretaker, and Honami agrees with her sentiment.

A Bright Future!![]

In Honami's "Figuring Out What I Can Do" card's second side story, Honami arrives at the Yoisaki household, greets Kanade and starts her usual chores. After dinner, Honami serves Kanade some chamomile tea and they proceed to talk about the flowers that Honami had brought with her. After some discussion, Honami thinks to herself how she's glad they've become closer friends. Kanade then says she hopes that her part-time work doesn't take too much time away from her band practice, and Honami starts telling Kanade how they'd performed at a live house and plays a recording from one of their practice sessions for their original songs. Honami feels nervous while waiting for Kanade's reaction. Kanade then thanks Honami and gives some constructive criticism for the song before apologizing for "sounding too snobbish." Honami says she's glad to hear an "incredible composer like Kanade's" opinion. The two proceed to talk about Leo/need's original song a bit more before Kanade mentions that one of her songs finally managed to resonate with Mafuyu, leading to her realizing how important it is "to think about what you want your listener to feel." Honami is surprised that Kanade also faces the same kinds of hurdles while composing music. Honami mentions wanting to help her bandmates out in some way and Kanade asks if believing in them isn't already good enough, explaining that Honami trusting them is possibly a significant part of why they can keep going. Honami thanks her and apologizes for bringing up her personal problems, but Kanade assures listening to her worries and giving advice to her is nothing compared to everything that Honami has already given and done for her [Kanade] already.

Someday, From the Depths of Despair[]

In the opening chapter, Honami asks Kanade if she wants Honami to make some extra food she can eat later, and suggests she makes stew. Kanade smiles and tells Honami she'll be working in her room for the meantime. Kanade goes to check the kitchen after somewhile and Honami offers her some of the stew she had just finished cooking. Kanade mentions Honami made stew on the first time, after which Honami mentions they also didn't speak much back then. Kanade regrets her past actions a bit, thinking how it was rude of her to not interact with Honami. Honami then says it's been two years since they met and Kanade says she feels like she has an easier time relaxing when compared to her past self. Honami suggests it's because she has people she could open up to.

In Episode 3, Kanade, who now recently lived all alone due to her father's hospitalization, gets a call from her grandmother. They talk for a bit and she mentions that she'll hire a housekeeper for Kanade. Kanade claims she doesn't need a housekeeper and she's got not time for something like that as she desperately needs to keep composing songs to save people. After Kanade faints from overwork at the end of the 5th chapter, she wakes up in the hospital with her grandmother and Honami by her bed in the next chapter. Kanade's grandmother mentions that she had called the housekeeping service to check up on Kanade, and Honami had realized that Kanade collapsed when she had attempted to enter the Yoisaki household. Honami reveals she hasn't started her part-time job as a housekeeper yet and is just overseeing with the agency but was planning to do so in high school. Kanade's grandmother suggests and begs her at the same time to finally hire a housekeeper as she doesn't want Kanade to become hospitalized as well, and she contemplates it for a bit before accepting, as she justified to herself that it'll impact her ability to compose if she doesn't have anyone to take care of her. Both Honami and Kanade then get surprised when the latter's grandmother requests they hire Honami when she starts high school, saying "there must be some meaning behind you two meeting like this." They both accept the offer and Honami tells Kanade to properly rest.

In Kanade's "Faintly Glowing Elpis" card's first side story, her work is interrupted again by her growling stomach and she remembers she can heat up the extra food Honami made for her. She then thinks to herself how much Honami does for her and how she wants to show her appreciation for Honami in some way. A few days later, Honami comes in and asks if there's anything Kanade would like to eat. Kanade mentions that she really liked the stew Honami made last time, and Honami confidently says she'll do her best to make it taste even better this time. Later, Honami calls Kanade over to the kitchen and after eating, Kanade thanks her and Honami says she's very happy that Kanade is enjoying herself so much. Kanade then asks if she could try brewing the tea herself today, before explaining to the confused Honami that she wants to do it as a way to repay Honami for everything she's done. Honami tells her she'd love some Earl Grey and Kanade starts the process, also narrating the steps to herself. Honami struggles to hold herself back from helping Kanade and then asks if Kanade's okay when some of the water she was pouring dropped onto her finger. Kanade, puzzled, mentions it looks different than what Honami usually makes and Honami steps in to fix the situation and change it into milk tea, without outright saying that Kanade was doing things wrong. While drinking it, Kanade says Honami's tea always tastes and smells much better, but Honami tells her with a smile that the tea Kanade prepared is very good as well, and how she can taste Kanade's kindness and warmth in each drop of the tea. Kanade feels relieved and thanks Honami for always cooking for her before mentioning she's always looking forward to eating more of it.

Paint What I Love♪ Rainbow Canvas[]

While doing her usual chores at the Yoisaki household, Honami sighs as she feels very nervous about her upcoming job shadowing. Kanade surprises her by coming to the kitchen to take a break before asking Honami if she's feeling alright. Honami apologizes for worrying Kanade, but Kanade tells her to not worry about it and how she wants to help Honami in any way she can. Honami thanks her and then proceeds to explain her dilemma, which leads to Kanade later asking Ena for help.

In Kanade's "Guiding Encounters" card's first side story, which takes place after the event story, she enters the kitchen to find Honami humming while cooking and smiles. Honami then notices Kanade and tells her to take a seat and wait for a few more minutes. Kanade points out Honami looks much happier than usual, leading to Honami getting flustered and blush. Kanade tells her to not worry about it and that she's happy how Honami feels so at ease while over at the Yoisaki household. Honami serves her the food and then proceeds to tell her about the job shadowing as well as thank Kanade for introducing her to Ena. After dinner, Honami puts the leftovers in the refrigerator and freezer and Kanade notices that the notes on the containers have drawings on them. She mistakes Honami's drawing for a different food and apologizes for it but the two end up laughing it off. Kanade then asks if Honami could show her more of her art, and Honami agrees to her request with a smile.

Hope Will Someday Go Beyond the Morning[]

In Kanade's "The Best Specialty Shop In Town" card's first side story, while listening to Ena and Mizuki talk about Mafuyu staying over at the Shinonome residence and that a person's room is "an expression of their personality", Kanade ponders that she needs to do some cleaning as well and how her situation isn't as bad anymore thanks to Honami's help. Both Ena and Mizuki are surprised when Kanade says she should clean her room a bit and she proceeds to explain that back in the past, her desk would be way more messy, as she'd have to constantly restack her sheet music after accidentally knocking it down, and how it feels nice to not to have do so anymore. Kanade thinks how Honami genuinely cares for her well-being and then states she needs to properly thank Honami again sometime, before proceeding to ask Ena and Mizuki about bakeries with good apple pie.

In the second side story, after a round of suggestions, Kanade goes out to one of the apple pie specialty stores that Honami had previously bought apple pie from and brought it for Kanade to eat. Kanade sighs in relief, as she thought that the store would run out after having to wait in a massive line. After seeing the time, Kanade decides to head home before Honami arrives, and coincidentally ends up running into her. Honami notices the bag and Kanade says that she wanted to repay Honami for always taking such good care of her. Honami replies that Kanade didn't need to do it since she's just doing her job, but Kanade insists, surprising Honami, and Kanade suggests they eat it together during snack time, which Honami agrees to with a smile.

In episode 1, Honami is cleaning Kanade's kitchen when she notices most of the food she's made before was uneaten. She frowns and wonders whether Kanade didn't like them, before deciding to visit Kanade in her room. Honami knocks on the door, and after hearing no response, she lets herself in and finds Kanade focused on composing. Honami quickly grows concerned about Kanade's state, and it reminds her of what Kanade was like when they first met. Honami expresses her worry to Kanade, to which Kanade apologises and says she knows how much effort Honami puts into her cooking and that she's been so absorbed in composing that eating hasn't crossed her mind. Honami tells her it's okay and asks her what she would like to eat, assuming she must be hungry. Kanade politely says that she's okay and she'll eat later, wanting to continue working on her song. Honami still continues to worry, and asks Kanade if she's sure she doesn't want to take a lunch break, saying she's worried that Kanade might collapse again. Kanade then agrees with Honami to have lunch and says that she doesn't want her work going to waste if she collapses. Later in the episode, while they eat lunch, Honami apologises to Kanade if she's prodding too much about her health, while Kanade responds that she actually really appreciates Honami taking care of her. Honami then asks Kanade if it’s okay for her to know why she's been so focused on her composing. Kanade talks about how things have been especially bad for a friend of hers, which is why she wants to compose a song to save her as fast as possible. Honami compliments Kanade on how willing she is to do things for others, but reminds her not to push herself too hard. Kanade thanks her and promises to be more careful.

Birthday Cards[]

In Kanade's first birthday card's first side story, Honami comes over for cleaning and notices Kanade had a big cardboard box delivered to her. She reveals it's filled with food and how her grandmother sent it to her, telling Honami to make something delicious for Kanade's birthday next week. When Honami asks her if there's anything she wants Honami to cook for her, Kanade says nothing in particular comes to her mind and she doesn't mind eating anything as everything Honami makes is delicious. In the second side story, thanks to everyone in Niigo celebrating her birthday, with even Ena buying her a cake, she manages to remember how she always had her mother make her a "special plate" for her birthday which contained all her favorite foods, and how excitedly she looked forward to it each year. When Honami arrives to her house the next day, she decides to request Honami to make it. Honami happily agrees to it, saying she might not be as good of a cook as her mother was, but she'll do her best to make Kanade happy.

In Honami's first birthday card's second side story, Kanade asks if something good happened to Honami because of how happy she was, and Honami mentions that it's her birthday. Kanade says she didn't know and apologizes, suggesting that she could've rescheduled. Honami claims it's okay and when Kanade feels bad for not having a birthday present, Honami reassures that it's fine. Upon Honami mentioning that she brought Kanade more flowers, the latter mentions that she could buy Honami flowers as a late birthday present. Honami thinks to herself the two of them must have grown a lot closer because Kanade's willing to do that much for her, and Honami thanks nd accepts Kanade's suggestion with a smile, also saying she's looking forward to seeing which flowers Kanade picked out for her. Kanade then congratules her and Honami thanks her again.

In Honami's second birthday card's second side story, a day after Honami's birthday party, she finds Kanade brewing tea in the Yoisaki household's kitchen. Kanade mentions wanting to practice brewing as much as she did before Honami came in, and proceeds to hand her a cup. Kanade also hands her some apple pie she'd brought from a store Ena recommended to her and thanks Honami for everything. Kanade admits being surprised that there are so many kinds of apple pie out there and as a result she ended up buying a bunch of different kinds of Honami's birthday gift. Honami then asks if Kanade would like to have some together, and Kanade accepts her offer.

Fanon[]

Honakana is quite popular within the Project SEKAI fandom, mostly rivaled by each other's most popular ships, Kanamafu and Shihonami. Similarly to Kanamafu, Honakana and Kanahona are both widely used ship names in the Western fandom, while "Honakana" is the more common alternative in the Eastern fandom. It is seen as a very soft ship, with fanarts and fanfics featuring Honami taking care of Kanade or Kanade wanting to learn to take better care of herself, such as by learning to do household chores.

It is currently Honami's 2nd most written, and Kanade's 3rd most written ship on AO3, only lagging behind their poly ships with their respective groups.

Ship Weeks[]

The first Honakana Ship Week was held on February 5-11, 2023 under the honakanaweek2023 hashtag on Twitter. The prompts for the first day were "sick day or ooking", "stargazing or picnic", for the second day, "fishing or holiday" for the third day, "trauma or nightmare" the fourth day, "apocalypse AU or superhero AU" for the fifth day, "April Fools units or role swap" for the sixth day, and the seventh and final day was "confession or marriage".

Trivia[]

  • Their ship is referred to with the "🥧🎼" and "🎼🍎" emojis.
  • Kanade is 154 cm tall while Honami is 166 cm, giving them a height difference of 12 cm.
  • Their Kizuna Rank titles include: "Giving & Receiving Care", "Apple Pie at the Dinner Table" and "Built Trust".
  • One of their Cheerful Carnival titles is "It's Food Time".
  • In Honami's character introduction video, she mentions having an unusual job which would make for an interesting topic, but refuses to speak any further justifying it wouldn't be fair for Kanade.
  • In Honami's Birthday card story, Kanade gives Honami a bouquet of chocolate cosmoses. Although she most likely chose them because of their fragrance, in flower language, the chocolate cosmos flower signifies "communicating your feelings of intense love", and is a depiction of "passion", "desire", and "sensuality".
  • In some of Kanade's seasonal menu lines, she mentions noticing certain things (such as a cherry petal and leaves) laying around at her house and wonders if Honami had bought them with her without realizing.
  • In the Niigo PASH! (February 2022) interview, Kanade gives special thanks to Honami. Mafuyu comments that if it weren't for her, Kanade would have become malnourished and in the worst case scenario, even died.[1]
  • In the 87th 4-koma, when Kanade talks about her and Honami's relationship and how they have known each other for 2 years now, Mizuki comments that she makes it sound like they've been married for 20 years instead.[2] This, however, did not make it to the official English translation for the 4-koma.
  • In Kanade's 4* gacha card quote for the "On This Blank Canvas, I Paint", she mentions that Honami advised her to improve her diet, and even in her pre-training art she is arranging the labeled containers in her fridge. However, it is speculated that this was completely cut out as neither of her card stories nor the event story mentions anything about this, with even Japanese fans expressing their dissatisfaction for the fact.
  • In the 172nd 4-koma, Honami asks Rin how to invite Kanade to the bridal festival, Rin suggests while reading a manga that she invites her forcefully by pushing her against the wall and holding her chin, making Honami ask in a flustered manner if Saki taught her that. Some fans took this as a confirmation that "Saki ships Honakana as well."
