HonoUmi is the femslash ship between Honoka Kosaka and Umi Sonoda from the Love Live! fandom.
Canon[]
Honoka and Umi are childhood friends, along with Kotori. When they were children, Umi watched Honoka and her friends playing hide-and-seek, but she didn't dare ask to play with them because of her shyness. Honoka noticed Umi and invited her to play with her, but Umi hid behind a tree scared. Honoka found her, telling her that he had caught her and that now it was her turn to catch him. Since then, Honoka and Umi have been very good friends.
Umi often gets annoyed by Honoka, for things like her risking too much, eating too much, or her general clumsiness. However, Umi cares a lot about Honoka, and does everything she can for her sake. Honoka also helps Umi a lot, especially when it comes to overcoming her fear and shyness.
Season 1[]
After Honoka found out that the school was going to close and became hysterical about it, Umi along with Kotori tried to calm her down, telling her that they still had to wait for them to graduate. Then when Honoka proposed the idea of becoming an idol to save the school, Umi refused and even tried to leave making an excuse that she had to do something. Umi objected because being an idol would require serious effort, and trying just out of curiosity would be useless. However, after that, Umi couldn't stop thinking about school idols, so when she was practicing archery she failed all the time even though she normally never failed. In a conversation with Kotori, Umi commented that she believes that Honoka always put them in trouble by taking them to risky paths. However, she realized that in the end she never regretted it, and she began to feel nostalgic. Umi finally decided to give it a try, offering to train with Honoka when she saw her practicing alone.
For most of their start as idols, Umi was negative to Honoka about the situation. She accused Honaka of taking it too lightly because there were only a few months left and they had not organized anything. However, the truth was that Umi was very scared by the idea, due to her stage fright. Therefore, Honoka tried to help Umi overcome her fears as much as possible. For example, she sent Umi to hand out flyers for her concert in a place full of people, so that she gets used to speaking in public. She also motivated her to wear a short dress in public, pulling down her pants and telling her that she wouldn't be afraid if she was with her and Kotori.
In episode 12, when Kotori finally said that she was going to study design abroad and Umi said that she didn't say it until now because of the festival, Honoka came up angry because she hadn't told her. Then Umi explained that Kotori always thought about her and her reaction, and that's why she kept it a secret. Honoka became so desperate at the news of Kotori's departure that for a moment she said she gave up and no longer wanted to be an idol. After saying such a thing, Umi slapped Honoka, telling her that she was not that kind of person and was disappointed in her. Later they met again on the stage where they sang for the first time, and Honoka confessed that she still wanted to be an idol and sing, but she couldn't without all of them. Then Umi confessed to Honoka that the reason why she got so angry with her was that she always put her and Kotori in risky situations, like being an idol now, but that for her that was like taking her and Kotori to "visit unexplored worlds" and Umi loved that about her. Eventually, she hated that Honoka was hiding how she feels. In the end, Umi told Honoka that Kotori wanted her to be "selfish" with her, motivating her to prevent Kotori from leaving.
