Harry is Uma’s best pal and they’ve grown up together. He is her first mate, her right hand man for anything that she wants. They’re ride-or-die for each other, they love each other.
— China Anne McClain, Uma’s actress, on Uma and Harry’s relationship[1]

Huma is the het ship between Harry Hook and Uma from the Descendants fandom.

Canon[]

Uma and Harry are childhood best friends and are still very close to this day. They grew up together on the Isle and caused mischief and went on adventures together, having both attended Serpent Prep as classmates. He became her first mate when she began building a crew and they made a bet on whoever wins Captain Hook's race will become each other's first mate, which Uma won. Despite not accepting Uma as the captain at first, he grew to always follow her orders, which he also did when they were younger. Harry is Uma's right-hand man and is always by her side. He supports her unconditionally, hyping her up and enforcing her status as captain. The two have a deep mutual care and are ride-or-die for each other. Harry is also protective of Uma, getting angry when people call her "Shrimpy", which Mal used to call her for bullying. The two often banter and tease each other, with Harry frequently flirting with Uma, which she doesn't return. In Rise of the Isle of the Lost, it is described that Uma and Harry have "forever" played a game of "question-and-rejection" in regard to Harry's flirting. It is evident that Harry has a crush on Uma. The two are touchy with each other — for example, Uma is seen touching Harry’s hair, hook, chin, winking at him, and more, while Harry often gets close to Uma, hugs her, and expresses flirtation and care for her.

In the prequel book Rise of the Isle of the Lost where Uma gathers a crew to get revenge on Mal, she recruits Harry. It is shown that Harry and Uma both attend Serpent Prep and are classmates and childhood friends. Uma tells Harry that they need a ship for their endeavors, leading the two to bicker over a competition to make it to Dead Man’s cove to win the ship the Lost Treasure. In their dispute, Harry drops his hook. Uma seizes the opportunity and grabs it to make a proposition with him that she’ll give it back if either of them win. If neither of them win she’ll throw it away. She adds that if she wins, then Harry has to work as her first mate. Harry adds that if he wins then Uma will be his first mate. They agree to the deal and discuss the missing trident that could help them bargain their way out of the Isle.

During the race, when Harry almost takes the lead, Uma is determined to win as she refuses to become his first mate. She ends up winning and introduces Harry to the crowd as her first mate. Harry is glum at the loss but brightens up when Uma gives him his hook back.

Uma“Good job.”
Harry“Good job, Captain?”
Uma“As if. You work for me, remember? Do I have to keep reminding you? I’m captain, you’re first mate.”
Harry“First date if you’re lucky.”
— Rise of the Isle of the Lost

After gathering a crew, Harry compliments Uma’s hat, she returns by praising the ship and his work. She tells him good job. He adds a “Captain?” to her statement. In response, she reminds him that he works for her now, pointing a finger and poking his chest with it. Harry winks, pulls on his collar, and teases her by correcting her that he’ll be her first date if she’s lucky. Uma laughs and tells him to shut up, ordering him to see to the sail. However, she knows she can’t hurt his feelings and that it’s part of the “question-and-rejection” game they’ve played “forever", regarding Harry's flirting. Harry comes back, leans “closely” to her side and calls her darling while asking how they’ll find the trident. She smiles confidently and tells him to leave it to her, despite her concerns.

During their conquest to find the trident, they exchange banter and jokes together. Harry teases Uma about nearly falling off the ship when unfurling the masts. She then jabs at him for swaying and not staying on his feet. Harry jokes that Uma is trying to “tell him something” when she mentions two lovers carving a heart in a tree concerning the treasure. When Harry falls into the underground lagoon and is trapped, Uma and Gil go down to dig and find him. Uma calls Harry’s name and asks if he’s alright when they find him. Harry grins and thanks her, calling her Captain. He then realizes his words and that it was the first time he’s acknowledged her title and meant it. From then on, Harry addresses Uma by Captain.

When they get ahold of the treasure chest and find Ursula’s necklace is broken, Harry encourages her Uma reminding her that they can use sludge to glue it together. When the trio loses to Mal and end up shipwrecked, Harry offers encouragement to them.

Harry kneels, takes off his hat, and says Uma’s name slowly

When the characters are first introduced in the movies, they are angry yelling at Mal on the screen, Harry gets angry at Gil when he reminded everyone what Mal did to Uma (poured a bucket of shrimp over her head and kept calling her "Shrimpy") that Uma holds him back. They fervently discuss taking Mal's turf. She then asks him what her name is, Harry takes off his hand and kneels to her while looking her in the eyes and saying her name slowly, keeping eye contact with her.

Uma touches Harry’s hand

When performing "What's My Name?" the two sing some lines together and Harry has a rap part all about Uma. While dancing, they share many close and even flirtatious moments and Harry keeps heavy eye contact with Uma. When they're walking on the table slowly, Uma looks back at Harry and touches his hand. When Jonas approaches Uma, Harry grabs his throat by his hook and pulls him away from her. In the scene afterward, they sing a line together while pushing their respective weapons (Uma's sword and Harry's hook) together.

“She's the captain, I'm the first mate / Enemies seasick can't see straight / Call 'em fish bait, throw 'em on a hook / Uma's so hot they get burned if they look”

Uma touches Harry’s hair, he leans back

Harry walks the plank in front of Uma and starts singing his rap part, describing their enemies as getting burned by Uma if they look at her and mention their titles as Captain and First mate. During this Uma winks at Harry twice. Later, Uma grabs Harry's hook and says, "Hook me!" and the two laugh. In another scene, Harry jumps toward Uma, and she puts her hands through his hair, which he leans back into, showcasing their close bond.

Harry and Uma hug

The two reunite a bit into the film and happily greet each other, they then begin working with the VK's to stop Audrey with Mal agreeing to free the children off the Isle. Like previously, the two are always together with Harry protecting her and following her orders; when the girls and boys spilt up looking for Ben and Audrey, the boys find Ben and go back to the girls where Harry and Uma hug each other, with Harry asking if she's ok and Uma nodding as they hug.

Harry lifts up Uma in a hug and spins her around

When Mal reveals that she's lied to them and that the children won't be getting freed off the Isle Uma and Harry leave her, when Mal runs and tries to convince them to help her it's Harry that helps Uma reject her. When Mal goes to fight Audrey by herself and is failing, Uma comes and saves her with her powers and Harry by her side, who catches Uma when she nearly falls from using her powers. When they win Uma and Harry start cheering, running at each other as Harry grabs Uma and hugs her, lifting her off the ground and spinning her around.

Finally, when the barrier is broken and the children from the Isle can go to Auradon, the two walk out slowly while giving each other happy looks, they sing and dance together during the last song "Break This Down". When Harry starts flirting again with other people Uma nudges him and asks her what her name is, he smiles and says "Uma!” before going to kiss her, to which she pushes him away and walks off, leaving him embarrassed. Harry ends up dancing with Audrey, but he is later seen locking arms with Uma and walking away.

Fanon[]

Huma is one of the most popular ships in the series given how close the two are and how they act with each other, some even argue that it's more popular than the main series pairing Bal. There are currently over 900 works for Huma on AO3. It is the fourth most written pairing on AO3, arguably one of the top 5 most popular pairings in the fandom, and the most popular ship for both Harry and Uma.

Fans were quickly drawn to Huma upon their introduction in the second film. Many liked the interactions between the two and found Uma and her gang to be more interesting than the reformed VKs. The explosive chemistry between Harry and Uma (mainly during "What's My Name?") was also cited as a major reason for shipping the two, alongside the fact that Harry shows Uma great respect. Some even theorized that they were a couple. With how touchy they are with each other and their mutual care, many fell in love with the duo. Fans also picked up on Harry seeming especially smitten with Uma despite flirting with many people. Harry's constant flirting and care for Uma, as well as their dynamic of Uma being more assertive and calmer compared to the off-kilter and unpredictable Harry was also an appeal for the ship. They foil each other (working the Opposites Attract trope). They are often portrayed as a "ride or die" couple, with both of them willing to sacrifice themselves for each other. Many expressed their sadness that Huma did not end up being canon despite the undeniable potential between the two and were disappointed that they didn’t end up kissing in the third movie. However, it could be assumed that this has happened many times before due to their long-time “question-and-rejection” game. With the amount of romantic tension and build-up between them, fans wondered why the pairing was discarded in the end. Harry dancing with Audrey led some people to start shipping Haudrey, disappointed that Harry and Uma didn’t get together, but Harry walking with Uma in the end enlightened Huma shippers.

Some fans only see the two as platonic friends and believe that any attraction Harry is said to have for Uma was simply invented by the fandom. These fans often still love the relationship, but do not see the characters as being romantically interested in each other. These fans are oftentimes Umal or Gilry shippers or otherwise see Uma and/or Harry as being queer. The main argument against Huma is that Harry flirts with almost everyone in the cast, meaning his flirting toward Uma is shallow and unmeaningful. However, Huma fans argue that Harry’s relationship with Uma is different, considering their immense genuine love and care for each other and that their bond is unlike any other. Some people also see Uma as not returning Harry's feelings, headcanon that she sees him as a brother or she's a lesbian, others believe she might somewhat feel the same considering her care for Harry and a moment where she showed jealousy in the third movie, or that she’s playing hard to get. The aforementioned pairings along with Malry, Benrry, Haudrey and Jarry are the most notable rivals of Huma. Some Huma shippers see Harry and Uma as bisexual.
