The two met each other during the killing game and interact for the first time during the Six-Legged Pentathlon game when players are tasked to make up teams of 5. Although their first interaction was way later, when Hyun-ju was fixing her hair in front of the cameras and Geum-ja was judging her from afar, Yong-sik was trying to explain to his mother the concept of transitioning.
Hyun-ju with Young-mi and Yong-sik with Geum-ja were trying to find teammates during Six-Legged Pentathlon while the 10 minute countdown was going. With less than 2 minutes on the clock the two pairs stumbled upon each other, with Seon-nyeo joining in as well. When it was their turn to play they all started to introduce themselves and after Yong-sik said his name and mentioned how he is Geum-ja's son, Hyun-ju smiled at that. When Yong-sik failed his first throw while playing Flying Stone, Hyun-ju reassured the team that everything's okay and they'll go get the stone. When Hyun-ju successfully completed Jegi, Yong-sik was very happy at that and they survived the game.
After the Six-Legged Pentathlon, Hyun-ju is asked some questions and she starts to explain her transitioning. Geum-ja asks more questions about it and Yong-sik tells her to stop, insisting that she's poking her nose not into her business. Hyun-ju reassures it's fine and explains more about it, to which Geum-ja enthusiastically makes a statement regarding her surgery. Yong-sik stops her and starts apologizing for her behaviour. Right before the voting is going to start, Geum-ja offers Yong-sik that if they'll leave that they will have dinner and invites the other two, Hyun-ju and Young-mi, to join in as well. Yong-sik and Hyun-ju both vote to continue the games.
After voting, Hyun-ju opens up more about her personal life and says that she worked in the army, to which Yong-sik reacts with a surprise on his face. She then goes on about how she wants to leave to Thailand and Yong-sik mentions that he visited it as well. He talks about how there are a lot of people like Hyun-ju there and how they're beautiful, to which she agrees with a smile on her face.
During Mingle, Hyun-ju is seen together with Yong-sik several times together, specifically when the amount of players is called out to be ten, six and four. After Mingle when the players are voting, Hyun-ju and Yong-sik both vote to leave the games. During the rebellion when Hyun-ju comes back to the dorm and starts calling for Dae-ho, Yong-sik shows her where he is by pointing to his direction.

The rarepair comes from their good relationship with each other as they became friends, with fans seeing potential for more. Yong-sik has shown to have a positive opinion on the transgender community, which would be good for Hyun-ju if the two were together. Fans also enjoy how Yong-sik, even when he didn't know Hyun-ju personally, was respecting her as evident by the scene when he's explaining to Geum-ja about transitioning. A popular scenario of the two to imagine is them voting to leave the games earlier and having dinner together, as well as them in general outside of the games. Most people see the two just as friends or only ship them platonically as there are more popular ships with Hyun-ju, them being Hyunmi or Hyunseok.
