In "It Came from the Nightosphere", Hunson Abadeer attempts to steal Gunter's soul but after it fails to do so, he kicks Gunter into the air. Ice King catches Gunter and asks him who said he could fly. Gunter points at Hunson and initially, Ice King confronts him. However, Ice King is frightened when he sees Hunson's face and flies away.

In "The Chamber of Frozen Blades", Ice King arrives at the Rock Kingdom's hospital and freezes several people to cut the line. He calls for a doctor to treat his sick penguin and as they wait, he suggests Gunter make more noise. Ice King tells Doctor Princess that without him, he'll be all alone and claims to be a widower. Gunter starts to expand but Ice King angrily yells at him for embarrassing him. Later, Ice King brings Gunter back home to the Ice Kingdom. It's revealed that Gunter laid an egg. When the egg hatches, Ice King is happy.

In “Still”, Gunter attempts to break Ice King's bottles of potions, so he puts them on a shelf out of Gunter's reach. Later, when Ice King sees Gunter bothering Jake, he thinks that Finn and Jake are bonding with Gunter without him and locks Gunter in a cage. After Ice King is frozen by one of his potions, he calls for Gunter to bring him the unfreezing one. Instead of helping Ice King, Gunter knocks it out of the window.

In "Reign of Gunters", Ice King leaves to buy a new Demonic Wishing Eye in Wizard City after being unable to find his current one. After he leaves, it’s revealed that Gunter had hidden it. While Ice King is gone, Gunter almost takes over Ooo with the Demonic Wishing Eye. When Ice King returns, he punishes Gunter with a spray bottle and orders him to remove the Demonic Wishing Eye. Gunter obeys.

In “I Remember You”, Ice King holds Gunter and sings a cover of Marcheline's Fry Song to him. He replaces some of the words with "Gunt".

In "The Party's Over, Isla de Señorita", Ice King leaves Ooo after being rejected by Princess Bubblegum again. He kisses Gunter's forehead and tells him that he's now the "man of the house".

In "Orgalorg", Ice King tells Gunter that he's hanging out with a bad crowd of penguins. Gunter shoves a sleeping gas grenade down Ice King's throat to knock him out so he and the other penguins can throw a party. During the party, Gunter is thrown into a wall and has his head split open with his pulsating green brain visible. When the Ice King wakes up, he scolds Gunter for breaking with his stuff, referring to it as "Daddy's stuff". He notices Gunter's wound. He pushes the brain back into Gutner's head and wraps it with cloth.

In "Come Along With Me", Ice King is reverted back to Simon and after Betty uses the Ice Crown to fuse with GOLB, the Ice Crown falls to the ground. Gunter fuses with the crown and becomes the Ice Thing. He also had wished for drums since the Ice King played drums. In the ending musical montage, Simon, Ice Thing, and Turtle Princess are shown hanging out at Marceline's house.

Fionna and Cake

In "The Cat Who Tipped the Box", Simon goes to the Ice Kingdom. Gunter greets Simon, referring to him as "Daddy" indicating that he sees him as a paternal figure. Simon asks to borrow his Demonic Wishing Eye, which Gunter agrees to, but Simon has to watch his drum performance, accompanied by Turtle Princess playing the trombone.

Fanon

As Ice King and Gunter, the two share a familial bond with Ice King treating Gunter as if he were his son. He scolds Gunter like a parent would to a child whenever Gunter’s antics annoys or upsets him. Ice King has said “You’re the man of the house now” to Gunter, which is a phrase fathers typically say to sons when leaving.

After Ice King reverts to Simon and Gunter becomes Ice Thing, the two are shown to still be on friendly terms. Ice Thing even refers to Simon as “Daddy”. It is unknown if Simon still sees him as a son like Ice King did or if he just considers him a friend.

Most fanfiction doesn’t focus on Gunter/Ice Thing and Ice King/Simon’s relationship. In fanfics that do contain both characters, their relationship is typically minimal and more in the background, similar to how it is in canon.
