Substitute Soul Reaper Arc[]
Ichigo is a fifteen year old teenager who can see spirits. He was trying to help the spirit of the girl who was being chased by a monster and he first sees a young woman in a black kimono. She drew her sword and defeated the monster before disappearing. At night, Ichigo thinks about the events that happened in the morning and wonders who that woman was. A black butterfly flies into the room and the same woman appears. Ichigo tries to talk to her but she apparently doesn't notice until Ichigo kicks her in the head. After her initial reaction to the human being being able to see her, she introduces herself as a shinigami and they have a conversation.
She explains about Soul Society, Pluses, and Hollows through drawings she made. Ichigo tells her that she draws very poorly. After explaining that there is a Hollow in the area that he has not been able to locate, Ichigo asks why he can't go, the Shinigami responds by saying that there is something damaging his senses. The other Hollow named Fishbone D that was following the dead girl stops when he senses a strong soul near a Shinigami. The Shinigami notices the Hollow's presence and notices its strong Reiatsu, since she is unable to sense it. Fishbone D finally arrives at Ichigo's house, attacking Ichigo's sisters. The Shinigami tells Ichigo to stay since she can take care of it. Ichigo only sees his sister Karin being attacked by the Hollow and manages to break the Kidō and attacks Fishbone D, but in vain. After rescuing her younger sister and learning that the attack on the dead girl and her two sisters was her fault, she tells Fishbone that if she wants her soul to go get it, she will.
Fishbone attacks Ichigo, but is saved by the Shinigami, who in turn injures the Hollow and herself. With no chance to fight anymore, she asks Ichigo if she wants to save her family she must become a Shinigami by impaling herself in the chest with her Zanpakutō. Ichigo agrees and tells the Shinigami to give him her sword, and she replies that her name is not Shinigami, it is Rukia Kuchiki, to which Ichigo replies with his name, Ichigo Kurosaki. After he became a Shinigami, Ichigo managed to defeat Fishbone, leaving Rukia stunned to see that she only gave him half of her power but he took it all, seeing how a human managed to break a kidō spell with his own hands and seeing a zanpakutō as big as Ichigo's.
The next day Ichigo notices that his family doesn't remember anything and begins to wonder why and where Rukia went. At school Ichigo during class his friends were asking him how a truck crashed into his house, unexpectedly he was greeted by a new exchange student who to his great surprise is Rukia.
After school, Ichigo begins to question Rukia about what she's doing here at his school. Rukia tells him that she can't go home since she's not a Shinigami, so she'll have to wait for her powers to return again. She then tells Ichigo that he has to replace her with his Shinigami duty, to which Ichigo immediately refuses. Rukia decides to take matters into her own hands and forcefully removes Ichigo's soul from his body and tells him to follow her. The two arrive at a park where a child's spirit is being attacked by a Hollow. Ichigo attempts to save the boy, but Rukia tells him that if he saves this soul, he must commit to saving as many souls as he can, even if it means sacrificing himself. Ichigo attacks the Hollow, and Rukia asks him if he's ready, to which he responds by saying that he saved him because he wanted to, not because of his Shinigami duty.

This is ED 26 and in this one we see Ichigo from Rukia's point of view. The song has been completed into a very emotional piece about a man who is struggling and screaming his emotions out in a very simple manner, in order to protect one woman.

- At the 2008 San Diego Comic-con, a fan asked Kubo about the meaning of Rukia's name, replying, "... She had her full name from the very beginning. Later on, I learned that the word “Rukia” means “light.” She's like a ray of light for Ichigo, which makes the name really suit her."[1]
- Rukia was the first character created in BLEACH. Ichigo when he was originally created had black hair and Kubo later changed it to orange to match Rukia.[2]
