“[You] literally jumped into my life. As a result, your words and actions have become engraved in my memories... That's the mark you left behind. ...I believe in your innocence. That's why you must believe in yourself as well.”
— Miles to Kay, The Forgotten Turnabout.

Investigations Duo is the friend ship between Miles Edgeworth and Kay Faraday from the Ace Attorney fandom.

Canon[]

Miles and Kay are canonically good friends, with Kay serving as Miles's unofficial and self-appointed assistant in his murder investigations. While the two of them initially met six to seven years before the events of Ace Attorney Investigations, that meeting was only temporary and they would only reunite in Investigations. However, the two of them quickly form a close friendship in which they are each willing to sacrifice their well-being for the other.

Flashback Cases[]

Turnabout Reminiscence

Miles and Kay first met when Miles was 19-20 and Kay was 10 in the courthouse. This meeting occurred as a result of the trial of Mack Rell, which Kay's father, Byrne Faraday, had originally been prosecuting until he was replaced by Miles due to an accusation made against him. While waiting in the courthouse's lobby after becoming Faraday's replacement, Kay ran into the same lobby and asked if she could trade her collection of coins for a singular dollar bill. Miles accepted, and Kay ran off.

After Faraday was found dead alongside Rell, and the new detective Dick Gumshoe had become a suspect, Miles interrogated him as part of his investigation into the crime. However, unbeknownst to him, Kay had previously befriended Gumshoe; thus, upset that Miles was being "mean" to her new friend, she ran up behind him and kicked him in the leg before promptly running off. In the process, she dropped a packet of swiss rolls on the floor, which Miles picked up.

Later, when Miles was once again interrogating Gumshoe, Kay once again tried to sneak up on him but this time was stopped. She remains aggressive until Miles returns her packet of swiss rolls, at which point she begins to discuss her friendship with Gumshoe and how they split the packet of swiss rolls so that she could save one for her father. At this, Miles begins to bring up the murder; and although Gumshoe tries to stop him, Kay intervenes by stating that she already knew, having overheard a discussion between guards. The topic of discussion causes her to burst into tears, and Miles internally empathises with her, having been in a similar situation where his father had been killed in the same courthouse.

Miles's foster sister, Franziska von Karma, reprimanded Miles for not trying to help Kay, which snaps Miles out of his reminiscence. He offers Kay a handkerchief, but Kay ignores it and instead blows her nose on his jabot. Because that covered it in Kay's snot, Miles swapped his jabot for a spare and gave Kay the one she'd used as a tissue. Kay expressed concerns about breaking one of her promises she'd made with her father—to not take things from strangers—so Miles pivots and tells her that she could return it in the future, making the act technically one of borrowing. He then asked some questions about the promises Kay made with her father, to which Kay showed him her Promise Notebook: a notebook in which she and her dad had written down all of the promises they'd made together.

After this, the two went on their separate ways, with Miles continuing to investigate the murder and Kay assisting Detective Tyrell Badd in his investigation. They met again when Miles and Franziska confronted the true culprit behind the murder and she pointed a gun at them in response, Kay ran back into the room the two of them were in and yelled at Miles to move; an act which saved his life. However, Miles was unable to thank Kay at this time as she followed Badd in chasing the true culprit, and Miles stayed behind with his sister.

The two of them wouldn't meet again for another six to seven years.

Moments[]

  • Miles and Kay often work in sync, with Kay repeating Miles's internal monologue out loud or Miles claiming that Kay had "stole his sentences."
  • Miles gave up his Prosecutor's Badge and thus his entire profession in order to protect Kay.

Fanon[]

The Investigations Duo is a popular friendship within the fandom, being such a prominent relationship and focus of the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection. Many people enjoy it for the lawyer and assistant dynamic between Miles and Kay (something similar to other popular friendships within the fandom, such as Phoenix and Maya or Ryunosuke and Susato) as well as the different energy between Miles and Kay—the two play off of and are shown to work together very well. Much of the plot in Investigations revolves around their strong friendship—for example, in The Forgotten Turnabout, where Miles is willing to give up his job to save Kay but Kay is in turn willing to confess to murder to save Miles's career. Many fans are also drawn to the friendship between Miles and Kay by the large amount of potential for fan content and interpretation of their relationship, as they're present together in most Investigations cases and as there is space to explore their friendship post-canon.

There are people within the fandom that interpret their relationship differently—depending on the person, either as a romantic relationship or as a familial one. Most people within the Ace Attorney fandom disagree with the romantic view, considering that Miles and Kay first met when Miles was 19 or 20 and Kay was 10. The familyship is more popular in the fandom, with fans pointing to in-game comparisons between Miles and Byrne Faraday as a reason to believe that Miles is like a dad to Kay or even as a basis to headcanon Miles adopting Kay after the events of Ace Attorney Investigations 2. However, this is not a universally accepted headcanon; many people disagree with it both because Miles is only 26 and Kay is already 17 during Investigations and because Kay already has other potential parental figures in her life (such as Badd).

On Ao3, Miles and Kay have 186 fics in the gen tag.
