Shiemi met Izumo when she joined Cram School, where they learn to be exorcists. After they had their first Magic Circles and Seals class, where both Izumo and Shiemi were shown to have the talent for summoning and taming demons, two white foxes and a baby Greenman. After class, Shiemi chases after Izumo and Noriko Paku so she can ask them to become friends with her, but Izumo didn't like Shiemi following and calling out to them, before she asked to become friends with them, and because Izumo believes that Paku is the only friend she ever needs, but after Shiemi explains that she never had a friend before, Izumo decides to take advantage of Shiemi's lack of friendship knowledge when she faulty agreed to become friends with her. Izumo has Shiemi carry her bag, pass out sheets for her, prepare her valeriana for Pharmaceuticals and to get her some melon bread and fruit milk; and because of Shiemi's kind nature she didn't mind doing those things for Izumo as she wants to be a good friend. Shiemi tells Paku this when Noriko told her that she doesn't have to for fill Izumo's requests.
At the training camp, after doing some written work, Shiemi hears Izumo telling Paku that she wants to take a bath and wants to take one too with her friend for the first time, but Izumo makes up an excuse to have Shiemi wait outside as she and Paku take one without her. Rin Okumura got tired of how Izumo was treating Shiemi like a personal slave and tries to tell her that a person like Izumo Kamiki wasn't werth her time, but Shiemi wouldn't believe Rin's words of her not truly helping Izumo as she wants to be the strong one who helps others; and she views Izumo as her first ever friend. When Shiemi and Rin hear screaming coming from the girl's bathrooms, and after Shimei decides to finally take a stand to help her friends, Izumo sees her attending to Paku's injuries with the plant that Shiemi's familiar provided her with. After Shiemi addresses the plant as "Sancho", Izumo corrects Shiemi with the plant's actual name, Aloe.
When Izumo, Shiemi and the rest of their class got attacked by the Naberius from yesterday, Shiemi summoning her familiar, Nee to protect them from the attacking demon, after Shimei collapsed from exposition Izumo checks on her as a tired Shiemi asks Izumo if she is alright, as she had noticed that Izumo hasn't need herself today. Izumo asks herself that question as she thought about how Shiemi worried about her while in her tired condition. Since no exorcist fights alone, as well as being inspired by Shimei's actions, Izumo decides to summon her familiars and get them to obey her again, before sending them to attack the Naberius. Once the demon was killed, Izumo attends to Shiemi and after she asks Shiemi if she is all right, Izumo confesses that she doesn't like her but admitted that she helped her out. Shiemi thanks Izumo and even though she told her that she didn't like her, Shiemi continues to view Izumo as a friend.
Due to Shiemi tripping up in her own kimono and was given a school uniform to wear, she asks both Izumo and Paku to help her put it on as she never wore a school uniform before. After Shimei was changed into it, both tamer in training when to join the rest of their classmates at the theme park.
