Canon[]

History[]

Jack and Leland were best friends before the start of the story. This resulted in the Pastel and Plaid kingdoms being friendly with one another long into their adulthoods. The pair both got married, with Jack marrying for love with Leelathae despite her dying during Gwendolyn's youth. Leland, on the other hand, did not marry for love but to produce heirs and had three sons. Long into his marriage, Leland maintained an obsession with Jack that went beyond friendship. Though Jack was entirely oblivious to the pain that he had inadvertently caused Leland.

Leland started to resent and harbor a grudge against Jack for prioritizing and choosing his relationship with Leelathae over their friendship. Leland's hatred extends to Lilyth for her having “stolen” Jack from him and Gwendolyn for looking just like her. Instead of communicating his hurt, his wounded ego and envy drove him to betray Jack and conspire against him for two decades. He vowed to himself to destroy the Pastel Kingdom and the tear the family apart from the insid personally just because he ceased to be the most important person in Jack's life.

Main Story[]

At the beginning of the story, Jack and Leland have remained close friends over the years. Jack is completely oblivious to Leland's one-sided obsession and hatred towards him. And, naturally, is entirely oblivious to the agreed arrangement between his sons and Jack's daughters to be part of a plan to turn the girls against him.

Leland set up the triple arranged marriage of his sons and bribed Jack anonymously to get him to steal a priceless artifact so that Leland could get him arrested and at the same time, disillusion his daughters’ view on him and take them away from Jack. Leland wanted to manipulate matters so that his children would turn on him for being a “hypocrite” for agreeing to hand over the omnipotent clam. When the truth comes out, Leland even asks Maria and Lorena why they don’t hate Jack when it all comes apart.

Leland's plans are foiled by the end, and he was confined to the dungeons for what would likely be the rest of his life, given the numerous counts of treason, thievery, and attempted murder. The final chapter shows Leland asking if anyone came to visit him, particularly Jack, only for it to be revealed that no one had come to see him. Jack had lost all faith in his old friend, to the point of never wanting to see him again after how badly he hurt his family.

Fanon[]

Jackland is a relatively popular ship in the fandom, though many people prefer to explore the one-sided angle that is depicted in canon. Leland nursing a longtime crush on his old friend, to the point of it lasting into adulthood interested a lot of readers. Many like to explore alternate universes where the feeling became mutual. Or, alternatively, timelines where their friendship hadn't become quite so toxic. Some sympathized with Leland's plight, while others feel his actions were too far given Jack had not done anything malicious.

The pair currently has 13+ fan works on A03, making it the sixth most written 'romantic' ship under the fandom tag. It is the second most written ship for Jack and most written for Leland. The primary rival ship is Jackathae.
