Jafar & Iago is the friendship between Jafar and Iago from the Aladdin fandom.
Canon[]
Aladdin (1992)[]
Sometime prior to the events of the film, Jafar bought Iago from a bazaar. When Jafar started plotting against the sultan, Iago joined him as he was tired of the sultan force-feeding crackers. Though Iago gets frustrated when Jafar can't find someone to enter the Cave of Wonders for them, Jafar assures him that their plan will succeed. Jafar shows annoyance when Iago dances to the music during Prince Ali's parade. When their scheme is exposed, Iago comes up with a new plan: convince Princess Jasmine to marry him. Iago then steals the magic lamp from Aladdin and brings it to Jafar, who uses his first wish to become sultan. During Jafar's rule, he gives Iago luxury, his own turban, and lets him exact his revenge on the old sultan by force-feeding him crackers. Iago cheers Jafar on during the confrontation with Aladdin, but when Jafar turns himself into a genie and is about to get sucked into a lamp of his own making, he drags a panicking Iago in with him.
The Return of Jafar[]
Iago escapes from Jafar's lamp and abandons him in a well, claiming that he is through with serving him. After Abis Mal frees Jafar, Iago is forced by his old master to lure Aladdin into a trap while he captures Jasmine, Abu, Carpet, the Sultan, and Genie. As the treachery of Jafar's new plan increases, so does Iago's guilt. He eventually frees Aladdin's companions so they can save their friend from being beheaded. Though he initially opted to run away, Iago eventually destroys Jafar's lamp by kicking it into a pit of lava during the final battle, killing Jafar in the process. In doing so, he takes a magic bolt from Jafar; however, since genies cannot kill, Iago survives and is allowed to live at the palace, having been fully redeemed and rid of Jafar.
Kingdom Hearts Series[]
Jafar and Iago appear in the Kingdom Hearts series, fulfilling similar roles as they did in the films.
Disney's House of Mouse[]
Jafar and Iago appear together in several episodes of Disney's House of Mouse, most notably in the special, "House of Villains", where they devise and enact a plan to take over the House of Mouse.
Behind the Scenes[]
In earlier drafts of the film, Jafar and Iago's personalities were swapped. Screenwriter Terry Rossio describes their dynamic as Jafar transfer all of his "distracting" emotions into the parrot in order to ensure absolute focus on his magic. As consequence, the parrot became ambitious and irritable.
Fanon[]
Jafar & Iago is not considered to be such a popular friendship within the Aladdin fandom, due to the fact that other friendships, such as the one Aladdin and the Genie have, are considered to be better relationships over all. Others are not too fond of this friendship as they don't really see it as one, but more so as a toxic dynamic. That, however, hasn't stopped fans from creating fan arts of the pair, often portraying Iago in human form.
On AO3, there are 6 works for this friendship. It is slightly more popular as a romantic slash ship, with 10 works.
