Janni is the family ship between Janna and Rani from The Lion King fandom.
Canon[]
Janna and Rani were both introduced in The Lion Guard season three episode "The Tree of Life" as members of the Night Pride, with Janna being the Queen of the Tree of Life and Rani being her heir. After encountering the Lion Guard and demanding that they leave the Tree of Life, Rani goes to her grandmother to report the incident. She checks to see if Janna is awake, as her grandmother is quite advanced in age. Rani then reports everything to Janna, including the fact that the strange animals were led by a lion with a scar over one eye.
Janna finds this detail intriguing, but she commends Rani for her actions. However, after learning that Kion, the leader of the Lion Guard, utilized a supernatural Roar, Janna is surprised and guesses at the identity of the newcomers. Much to Rani's consternation, Janna then urges Rani to stop the Lion Guard and invite them to stay at the Tree of Life. Rani remarks on Kion's scar again, but Janna replies sagely that scars are something everyone has.
The queen also recites the phrase Sisi Ni Sawa, meaning "We're the same." Rani remains skeptical, but when Janna insists that she go and welcome the Lion Guard Rani submits. She does consult the spirits of her parents before doing so, expressing her concerns about Janna's wishes, but her parents both urge her to heed her grandmother's counsel. Then, upon finding the Lion Guard waiting respectfully at the border, Rani sees that her grandmother's intuition was correct.
In "The River of Patience", Rani brings the Lion Guard to meet with her grandmother. After introductions are made and Kion goes to begin his healing, Janna asks Rani to give the other members of the Lion Guard a tour. Rani is reluctant, wishing to attend to the Night Pride's patrol duties, but Janna notes that it is Rani's responsibility to do what Janna herself is incapable of doing. Rani later returns to her grandmother to report angrily that a group of predators have followed the Lion Guard to the Tree of Life and now threaten its inhabitants.
Rani now regrets allowing Kion and his friends to enter the Tree of Life, but Janna is more level-headed on the matter. When Kion offers the Lion Guard's assistance and Rani snaps at him, Janna rebukes her granddaughter's rudeness before affirming her declaration that defending the Tree of Life is the duty of the Night Pride. In "Little Old Ginterbong", Rani brings newcomer "Granny Ginterbong" to meet her grandmother. After greeting the newcomer, Janna again asks Rani to take charge of a tour, unaware that their guest is actually the villain Mama Binturong. Mama hatches a plan with the Lion Guard's other enemies to attack Queen Janna, but they are thwarted by the teamwork of the Lion Guard and Night Pride.
In "Long Live the Queen", Janna summons Rani and the rest of the Night Pride along with Kion, and Rani quickly realizes that her grandmother is near death. After they enter her chambers, Janna calls out to her granddaughter in greeting. She bids farewell to the other Night Pride members, asking Baliyo and Surak to support Rani in her new role as queen. Janna then says her goodbyes to Rani, assuring her granddaughter that she is ready to take the throne and that she will have support in this new phase of her life.
Rani promises to do all she can, and after replying in affirmation Janna passes away peacefully. Moved to tears, Rani gives her grandmother's body a final touch before turning away and weeping. Kion offers his sympathies, and Rani goes so far as to embrace him as she continues to grieve. After Janna has been laid to rest, Kion speaks to Rani about her grandmother, with Rani noting that she'll miss Janna's wisdom.
Managing to find some reprieve from her sorrow, Rani notes that it was because of her grandmother that she welcomed Kion to the Tree of Life. After the two speak some more and Rani offers Kion some advice, Kion notes that Rani is much like her grandmother, to which a bashful Rani responds that such is her aspiration. Upon entering the Tree of Life later, Rani feels her grandmother's absence keenly, but is then approached by Makini, her new Royal Mjuzi. Makini reveals that the walls of Rani's new chambers are painted with the history of the Tree of Life, including Janna's own life, so that the old queen's wisdom is readily available for Rani to consult.
Greatly touched by this gesture, Rani feels more confident about assuming her place as queen. She soon attends to her first royal duties, and not long after her coronation takes place. Makini, performing the ceremony, notes that Rani's acceptance would please Queen Janna. Later, Rani affirms her newfound readiness to her grandmother, speaking to Janna's spirit for the first time.
In "Triumph of the Roar", Makini explains to a puzzled Rani that Janna told her that Kion's Roar originated at the Tree of Life. Later, seeing Kion's newfound skill with the Roar, Rani recognizes that her grandmother was right about its return to the Tree being a positive occurrence. In "Journey to the Pride Lands", Azaad the cheetah expresses his condolences to Rani about Janna, for which she thanks him. In "Return to the Pride Lands", Janna is one of several lion spirits who appears in the sky as Rani marries Kion and Kion is proclaimed King of the Tree of Life.

Janni is not a relationship that has received a great deal of attention from The Lion King fandom. The Lion Guard is not a universally popular addition to the franchise. Fan works also have the tendency to focus on interactions between characters of the same generation or their respective parents. The relationship is somewhat notable in depicting a relationship between a grandparent and grandchild, which had not previously occurred in the franchise.
There are currently no works tagged for the pairing on AO3.
