“I was wrong about fusion, you made me understand. Malachite was bigger and stronger than both of us.”
— Jasper to Lapis in Alone at Sea

Jaspis is the non-binary ship between Jasper and Lapis Lazuli from the Steven Universe fandom.

Canon[]

Jasper was put in charge of overseeing Lapis, following her return to Homeworld. After imprisoning her, she forces Lapis into being hers and Peridot's informant as a way to help them find and capture the Crystal Gems. Jasper treats Lapis very roughly and sends her back to her cell after finding out she withheld information from her, despite Lapis saying it is not relevant to the mission. When Jasper attempts to coerce Lapis into fusing with her to defeat the Crystal Gems, Lapis eventually agrees. The two fuse together to form Malachite, with Jasper initially appearing to be the dominant personality. Before Jasper can make use of her new form, Lapis regains control of her hydrokinetic ability to bind and imprison their fusion beneath the ocean.

While trapped beneath the ocean, Jasper is tenacious in her efforts to either regain control of Malachite or escape the fusion. They are later unfused on "Super Watermelon Island" after being defeated by Alexandrite. The Crystal Gems manage to save Lapis, but none of them were fast enough to save Jasper from falling back into the ocean.

In "Alone at Sea", despite Lapis being much happier without her, she reluctantly confesses to Steven that she misses her. Almost on cue, Jasper shows up, having stalked their boat from the bottom of the ocean. Jasper begs Lapis to re-fuse with her, claiming they were better together than apart. She claims that Lapis is a monster, and only she could handle that power. Lapis admits that she liked taking everything out on Jasper and that their relationship was unhealthy, which is why she never wants to experience what they had again. After being rejected, Jasper becomes enraged and attempts to shatter Steven only to be thrown into the ocean by a water hand invoked by Lapis. Though Jasper is eventually defeated without being redeemed, she and Lapis were never shown together again.

Fanon[]

Jaspis became popular after season one's finale when Jasper and Lapis first fused. This popularity began to wane once they unfused as Jasper was missing for many episodes and Lapidot had become a favoured ship for Lapis. After "Alone at Sea" aired there was a lot of discussion within the fandom on how to contextualise their unhealthy relationship, as well as if Jasper would ever become a redeemed villain or not. Despite them not talking to each other since the third season, Jaspis still has a loyal following. On AO3 Jaspis is Jasper's most written for ship and Lapis' second most written, as well as the tenth most-written ship for the show overall.
