Masters of Spinjitzu

Jay inherited his powers from his mother. However, Jay didn’t unlock his powers until taking possession of one of the Four Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu. In Jay’s case, his weapon was the Nunchucks of Lightning, which he obtained in “King of Shadows.”

Jay’s Lightning powers remained limited for some time, due in part to his awkwardness in his relationship with Nya. Upon learning thst Nya reciprocated his feelings, however, he was able to overcome the emotional barrier. Jay thus unlocked his true potential, achieving unprecedented power and control over that power.

Unfortunately, Jay lost access to his powers after surrendering his nunchucks to Lord Garmadon, who subsequently stole them and the others Golden Weapons, in “Day of the Great Devourer.” He would later regain the use of his powers, albeit temporarily, through an Elemental Blade that he obtained in “Island of Darkness.” When he obtained one of the Techno-blades in “The Surge”, it also manifested Jay’s Lightning powers. In “Codename: Arcturus”, Jay and the other Ninja who had relied on weapons to access their powers were each granted a portion of the power of their friend Lloyd, the Green Ninja. Each of them, including Jay, could thus wield their powers without relying on any tools.

In “Winds of Change”, Jay and the other former Golden Weapon holders lose access to their powers after Lloyd is possessed by the villainous Morro. It is not until “Grave Danger” that Morro abandons Lloyd long enough for Jay and the others to regain the use of their powers and rescue the Green Ninja.

Following the events of the Crystalized season, Jay was once again left bereft of his powers. His efforts to recover them were covered in one portion of the book Quest for the Lost Powers. The story sees Jay struggling with the loss of his powers, despite Nya’s efforts to cheer him up with a vacation. In particular, the feeling of bereavement makes Jay think of his mother and predecessor as Master of Lightning, who left him with his adopted parents without explanation when he was an infant.

Jay fears that both his powers and his birth mother are gone forever, when he unexpectedly encounters his old foe turned friend Unagami. Even as he assists Unagami with searching for a fabled lost city, Jay is plagued by memories of losing his powers. He eventually discusses his difficulties with Unagami, who encourages Jay to hope that he may be able to reconnect with his powers. In the course of their search, Jay comes to realize that his adopted parents and friends have done the things any family would do for each other. Realizing that his birth mother had given him that gift, he finds his powers again at last. Jay was then able to use them to save himself and Unagami from the city’s defenses.

Fanon

Jay's Lightning power is a fundamental and iconic part of his character. The character is in fact introduced to audiences for the first time as "Jay, Master of Lightning." It is not, however, typically viewed in a romantic context, even jokingly.
