According to The Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel, Jay was one of the kids who bullied Carlos but became close to him.
Descendants[]
During "Rotten to the Core" Carlos and Jay are first seen causing mischief and vandalizing places around the Isle of the Lost. Their fun is cut short when Maleficent, Mal’s mother, catches them in the act and delivers terrible news—they’re being sent to Auradon Prep, which Jay and Carlos tries to make a run for it only for Maleficent’s goons to stop them. When Carlos tries to point out what is mother said to him about dogs, Jay scares him.
Reluctantly, the group packs their things and boards a limousine that takes them across the barrier to Auradon. When they arrive, Carlos and Jay playfully argue over a scarf as they step out of the limo. They are greeted by the Fairy Godmother, who welcomes them to their new school.
When Carlos notices a statue of King Beast changing from man to beast, he’s so startled that he jumps into Jay’s arms in fear with Jay giving an annoying glance as he holds Carlos. After Carlos calms down, Jay lets him down. The two are assigned as roommates, and they quickly find a share love of video games, which Carlos first tries as Jay was stealing things from others. Although Carlos convinces Jay to try the game out which Jay enjoys before Mal tells them of their mission.
During the museum heist, Carlos and Jay make fun of Maleficent’s spinning wheel, which Carlos calls “dorky.” When Jay falls, Carlos tries to help him up, but Jay pushes him off, refusing the gesture. When the group got to Fairy Godmother's wand, Jay accidnelty sets off the alarm, which was also in a force-field which both Carlos and Jay found a little excessive.
In class, the two sit next to each other. When Carlos tries to answer one of Fairy Godmother’s questions, Jay pushes his hand down before they get into a fight, leading Fairy Godmother to tell them to take their energy out on the Tourney field instead.
Both boys later try out for Tourney, a popular Auradon sport. Although Jay stands out due to his athleticism, with Coach Jenkins later teaching Jay about a team.
After his talk with Coach Jenkins, Jay proudly shows his new jersey to the VKs. Out of the group, Carlos is the only one who congratulates him. While helping Mal make a love potion for Ben, Carlos and Jay are gathering ingredients and sitting in the background. After Evie explains the different types of tears which both have antibodies and enzymes, but an emotional tear has more protein-based hormones than a reflex tear. Jay explains he knew that but Carlos playfully hits him and says he didn't before Lonnie comes in.
Later, when Carlos finally stands up to his mother and defends Dude, Jay shows support by putting a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
Later during the game, Jay insists that Carlos should be allowed on the team too. With both of them playing, the team ends up winning.
At Family Day, Jay and Carlos are seen together eating strawberries at the chocolate fountain, showing their easy camaraderie.
At Ben's Coronation, when Maleficent turns into a dragon, Carlos is the first to tell Jay to run to avoid her fire.
Later when singing "Set it Off", Jay allows Carlos to dance with Jane.
Descendants 2[]
Jay is now the captain of R.O.A.R.—a thrilling sport combining parkour and fencing—and Carlos is proudly on the team as well. Their bond is highlighted through their teamwork and playful competition.
As other students swoon over Jay, Carlos asks him for advice. Jay jokes, “All you gotta do is look like me!” and both laugh.
Later, the two secretly build a replica of Fairy Godmother’s wand in their dorm room. When Chad and Doug question them, they come up with excuses on the spot, covering for each other with seamless teamwork. They even fall asleep while working on the replica.
After the group rescues Ben and returns to Auradon, Carlos tells Mal and Evie that he and Jay are tired of being excluded from private conversations, saying that they should all face their problems together as a family. Jay initially backs down, but Carlos stands firm.
Descendants 3[]
Carlos and Jay continue to demonstrate their strong friendship and shared sense of responsibility. When the group returns to the Isle of the Lost to recruit new Villain Kids, Carlos and Jay work together with Mal and Evie to choose Dizzy, Celia, Squeaky, and Squirmy, underscoring their teamwork and leadership. After Ben proposes to Mal, both Jay and Carlso playfuly tease Mal "All bow to Her Royal Majesty!" and Carlos says “Oh yes, her Royal Purple-ness” — is him teasing Mal about how fancy and royal she’s become. Mal firing back at both of them with “Silence, you annoying peasants” as her being sarcastic, delivered with a smirk. She’s playing along, acting like a mock queen, which fits the mood right after Ben’s proposal.
During the mission, Carlos exhibits true courage in a pivotal moment: when Ben is transformed into a beast, Carlos calms him long enough to remove a splinter from his paw—a brave gesture made possible by the emotional support and loyalty he and Jay share in the VK team. Jay also gives a worry glance when Carlos gets closer to Ben, while also holding back Gil and Harry Hook from interferring.
When Mal revealed she lied to them that the program was shut down, Carlos and Jay were both beyond shock and Evie was the one who called her out, before both along with Ben, Evie, and Dude were turned to stone.
After Mal defeats Audrey, Carlos and Jay were with Gil as Mal revealed Hades is her father, which both boys were surprised.
The film’s mid-credits scene provides a touching visual of their bond. Alongside Mal and Evie, Jay and Carlos race across the newly built bridge back to the Isle, running shoulder to shoulder—symbolic of their unity and the journey they've taken together.
Descendants: The Royal Wedding[]
Carlos’s absence is deeply felt, particularly by Jay.
Noticing Mal was sad, Jay silently acknowledge Carlos' absents and gave her a charm bracelet with their crest, including Carlos. During the song “Feeling the Love,” Jay is seen standing with extra space beside him, a quiet tribute to Carlos, whose absence is deeply felt but he gives the biggest smile he gave throughout the special. After Mal and Ben gave their vows, Carlos' crest shine, meaning his spirit is present. Jay smiles softly, comforted by the reminder that Carlos will always be with them.
