Don't you trust me? I officiated your wedding, for God's sake
—Mr Kim's words to Choi Woo-seok.

JeongWoo is the friendship between Kim Jeong-rae and Choi Woo-seok from the Squid Game fandom.

Canon[]

In 2024, Kim Joeng-rae was paid by Seong Gi-hun to recruit more people for the search for the Recruiter. He then returned to his car to instruct his friend, Choi Woo-seok, to call everyone he knew. At first, Woo-seok was skeptical and argued in front of his men about the purpose of the mission. He believed that finding the Recruiter was nothing but a fabrication, while Mr. Kim trusted Gi-hun’s information, as a large number of his debtors had mysteriously disappeared over the past few years. To motivate his men, Mr. Kim promised to share a 500 million won reward with anyone who found the Recruiter, this excited Choi and the others.

The next day, Mr. Kim and Woo-seok attended a quick briefing on identifying The Salesman and how he played ddakji. Mr. Kim and Choi then teamed up to track their target in the subway system. But after many months, the search became increasingly difficult, with no idea where The salesman was. While they sitting and eating on a subway train, Woo-seok expressed his frustration, complaining to Mr. Kim that they had spent two years searching without rest. However, Mr. Kim remained firm in his belief that Gi-hun wouldn’t waste everything chasing after someone imaginary. Just as Woo-seok was describing The Salesman, they suddenly spotted him slapping a player, handing over money, and giving out a business card, matching Gi-hun’s description exactly. They quickly reported to Gi-hun and were instructed to continue following him but avoid direct confrontation.

They tailing The Salesman in a park and pretending to read a newspaper to cover their face while observing him, they were initially confused by his actions, handing out bread and lottery tickets to the homeless. Mr. Kim questioned Woo-soek about what The Salesman was doing, while Woo-seok assumed he might be a good person. But their shock was evident when The Salesman revealed his true nature by stomping on the bread right in front of the homeless people.

As they continued to follow him, Mr. Kim grew impatient, fearing they might lose sight of The Salesman. He insisted that Woo-seok join him in attacking the man. Woo-seok hesitated but Mr. Kim reassured him, reminding him that he had once officiated his wedding and telling him to trust him. Eventually, Woo-seok agreed and they attempted to approach The Salesman, both were swiftly knocked unconscious and kidnapped. When they woke up, they found themselves tied up in his hideout, completely helpless and despairing, forced into cruel game Rock Paper Scissors Minus One, as well as Russian Roulette. The Salesman explained the rules and loaded the gun, forcing them to take turns playing in order to survive. The Salesman then increased the difficulty by loading a total of five bullets, leaving one blank. This made them even more terrified, yet they continued playing. When it was Woo-seok's turn, he accidentally chooses two rocks, panicked and started crying. However, to his surprise, Mr. Kim did not pull his hand back, essentially saving Woo-soek’s life. Because of Mr. Kim's refusal to play, The Salesman disqualifies him and shoots him. After this, The Salesman "talks" with the winner, presumably wanting to know who sent them.

Later, Woo-seok is rescued by Hwang Jun-ho, who is following a lead to find Gi-hun. Upon discovering the Salesman's body, Jun-ho attempts to arrest Gi-hun for murder, but before he can do so, Woo-seok knocks him out with a fire extinguisher. Woo-seok then weeps as he tells Gi-hun everything about Mr. Kim’s death and also shares that Mr. Kim was the officiant at his wedding. Afterward, he joins Gi-hun and Jun-ho in ending the games to avenge his boss.

Moments[]

  • Mr. Kim sacrificed himself for his friend Woo-seok by not pulling back one hand during the game Rock Paper Scissors Minus One, which led to his death.
  • When Woo-seok saw The Salesman’s body and mistakenly thought Gi-hun had shot him, he cried and angrily declared in front of Gi-hun that he wanted to kill The Salesman himself. In that moment, he called Mr. Kim his "best friend" instead of "boss".
