Pre-series[]

Jellal and Erza first met as children in the Tower of Heaven, where they were forced to work on it's construction along with other children. Back then, Erza didn't have a surname, so Jellal suggested "Scarlet" after the color of her hair and she accepted it.

One day Jellal, Erza and their group of friends tried to escape the Tower. They were caught by the guards, who wanted to punish the person who came up with the plan and urged them to reveal who that was. Erza was prepared to take the blame for their friend Sho, but Jellal confessed first. However, the guards decided to take Erza, ignoring Jellal's pleas to take him instead. Erza gives Jellal a scared smile and tells him she will be fine.

Soon after, Jellal decided to rescue her by himself. When he saw how badly the guards tortured her, even removing her right eye, he cried in anguish. He assured Erza he would save her, and told her they had to fight. It was then that the guards appeared behind Jellal and attacked him. They then decided to let Erza go and torture him in her place.

Now back with the other slaves Erza, motivated by Jellal's words, starts a revolt to save him. When Jellal's torturers went to suppress the riots, Ultear took the opportunity to brainwash Jellal by pretending to be Zeref's ghost. During that time, Erza activated her magic powers, and was able to get to Jellal. However, when she reunited with him, she realized he had changed.

Jellal began insisting they stay to finish the Tower, and became angry at Erza when she refused. He exiled her from the island, and blackmailed her into silence. Meanwhile, he convinced their other friends to stay to work on the Tower, and lied to them that Erza had betrayed them.

Years later, Jellal infiltrated the Magic Council using a thought projection, and pretended to be Jellal's twin brother "Siegrain".

Lullaby Arc[]

Jellal and Erza's first scene together was in the Lullaby arc, when Erza was arrested for the damages caused during the battle against Eisenwald. As she is escorted to her trial she encounters Siegrain, who she doesn't know is Jellal's thought rejection. He reveals that the Council is using her as a scapegoat to display their authority. Jellal then leans towards Erza and warns her to keep the Tower of Heaven a secret from the Council before leaving to oversee the trial.

Tower of Heaven Arc[]

8 years after Erza had been banished from the Tower of Heaven, she is taken back by her old friends in order to be a sacrifice for Zeref. She is thrown into a prison but escapes and goes to fight Jellal. Meanwhile, Jellal's Thought Projection, Siegrain, is gathering votes at the Magic Council to destroy the Tower of Heaven with the Etherion.

Erza hugs Jellal

Erza hugs Jellal

After overpowering one of Jellal's henchmen, Ikaruga, she reunites with him. The two battle, and Erza eventually pins Jellal to the ground with her sword at his neck. She then tells Jellal he failed at completing the R-System because the tower doesn't have enough magic. Jellal tells her how his body was possessed by Zeref and how he is nothing more than a doll doing his bidding. He says he knew he could not finish the R-System, but Zeref would not let him stop. He asks Erza to strike him down, but she refuses. Erza expresses regret for not being able to save Jellal and hugs him as the Etherion hits the tower, intending to die together with him.

Surprised that she is alive after the blast, she looks around and notices there is Lacrima everywhere and that the structure is an absorption crystal. Jellal explains that the Council's Etherion provided the necessary magic to bring Zeref back. Just then, Siegrain shows up and reveals that he and Jellal are the same person, and that he became a Council Member just to cast the Etherion down on the tower. Now that he has morphed back with his thought projection, Jellal's full Magic Power returns.

A Bind Snake Jellal cast earlier stops Erza from moving. As Jellal puts her inside the Lacrima to be sacrificed to Zeref, he confesses that he had loved her. Erza yells out to Jellal in tears, before Natsu arrives to pull her out.

Eventually, Natsu manages to defeat Jellal, but the tower becomes unstable and is ready to blow up and kill everyone near it. Erza tries to sacrifice herself to stop the explosion, but wakes up unharmed outside of the tower. The next day, Erza hears Jellal's voice telling her she became strong. Later she theorized that Jellal was the one who sacrificed himself to keep the tower from exploding, after being released from Zeref's ghost.

Battle of Fairy Tail Arc[]

During the battle between Laxus and Mystogan, the latter's face was revealed to Erza and Natsu to resemble Jellal completely. Erza begins crying thinking he is Jellal, and remains distracted even after Mystogan leaves.

Oracion Seis Arc[]

Jellal, now in a comatose state due to absorbing the effects of the Etherion, ends up in the hands of the dark guild Oracion Seis. Jellal is first seen again in a cross-shaped coffin, wrapped up in chains, as Brain makes Racer bring him to Wendy Marvell. Brain gives Wendy 5 minutes to decide whether to heal Jellal, as Brain believes Jellal can lead the Oración Seis to the Magic they're after: Nirvana. Wendy mistakes Jellal for his Edolas counterpart Mystogan, who once saved her life, and decides to heal him.

Natsu arrives intending to save Wendy, and discovers Jellal fully awakened. As soon as he sees Jellal, Natsu goes on the offensive, but is instantaneously blown away by one of Jellal's spells. When Brain compliments Jellal on his power, Jellal turns around and causes the ground underneath Brain to collapse, sending him plummeting to the lower levels of the Oración Seis' base, before walking away. Now in the forest, having moved away from the Oración Seis' hideout, and having taken some clothes from a defeated mage, Jellal mutters Erza's name.

Meanwhile, Erza is lying unconscious after being poisoned by Oracion Seis' Cobra. Natsu arrives with Wendy, who treats Erza and removes the poison. Still thinking Erza is unconscious, Natsu mentions that Jellal is there. However, Erza hears his name and immediately goes to look for him.

Because the others are impeded in fights against the Oración Seis, Erza manages to reach Jellal first, although she is unsure of how to act towards him. To her surprise, she discovers that he has become amnesiac, and is only able to remember her name. As Erza explains who he is and what he did to his comrades, Jellal breaks down in tears upon learning what kind of person he was. Suddenly, Cobra appears and attempts to take Nirvana, but Jellal reveals that he put a Square of Self-Destruction around Nirvana to destroy it. However, he also put the spell on himself so he can end his life, and free Erza from the pain he has caused to her.

Erza scolds Jellal

Erza scolds Jellal

She doesn't take this too kindly and runs up to him, grabs him and tearfully demands that he cancel the spell and live. Jellal asks why Erza is crying, and when she doesn't respond, comments that she is kind. Moments later, Brain appears, revealing that he taught Jellal the Square of Self-Destruction, and easily cancels it, before activating the second stage of Nirvana. Erza and Jellal are caught in Nirvana's skywards eruption, as she holds onto Jellal with one hand. She pulls him up and, with a smile on her face, encourages Jellal to live on. Jellal smiles in return and takes Erza's hand.

On Nirvana, Midnight appears before the two. Jellal battles Midnight first, however he is easily defeated, as the Square of Self-Destruction he had cast prior leaves him severely drained. Erza tries her best to fight him, but is quickly overpowered. As Midnight tortures Jellal with the truth of his deeds, Erza rises and expresses her belief in Jellal's light. She Requips to her Robe of Yūen, readying herself for round two against Midnight. Eventually, Erza discovers Midnights weaknesses and defeats him.

Jellal goes to help Natsu defeat Zero, and after some back and forth, Natsu finally accepts him as an ally. After all of Oracion Seis is defeated, Erza thanks Jellal for all his help. Jellal dismisses her gratitude, and is then seen standing with her, not far from the rest of their allies. When asked by Erza what he plans to do next, Jellal admits that he's afraid of regaining his memories. Erza comforts him by saying that she's there for him, stating that, even if they were to start hating each other again, she can't abandon the Jellal standing there with her.

As she's about to say more, the whole group realizes that they have been surrounded by the Magic Council, led by Lahar. He claims to be there to arrest the Oración Seis members and Jellal himself. As Jellal willingly gives himself up to the Council, Lahar warns him that this will probably be the last time he ever sees everyone again, for he will either be given the death sentence or life imprisonment.

Erza trembles, not wanting to let Jellal go. Natsu, noticing Erza's conflicted feelings, starts a fight with the Magic Council trying to bring Jellal back. This causes every other Mage to fight for Jellal as well, except for Erza, who can only tremble in anger and watch the chaos. Erza decides to stop the commotion once and for all, and lets the Council take Jellal away. Jellal looks back at her in relief, but not before he mentions her scarlet hair, implying that he remembers the time he chose her last name, Scarlet. Erza says her farewells as she hopelessly watches him leave.

Erza later sits alone under the scarlet sky, tearfully mourning Jellal's loss as she remembers when she and Jellal were together as kids, and him choosing her last name based on her hair color so he would never forget it.

Tenrou Island Arc[]

Jellal is seen in one of the Council's prison cells. When Erza is nearly defeated by Azuma on Tenrou Island, he whispers Erza's name to himself, seemingly aware of the transpiring battle. The guards notice Jellal murmuring to himself and one of them starts to torture him with his Magic staff. The guard wonders aloud if Jellal is hungry, and states that he'll only give him food if he begs, otherwise, he'll leave Jellal without food for an entire week. Jellal ignores him, and instead asks Erza not to lose, something which shocks both of the guards. Erza is somehow able to hear Jellal's plea, and this grants her enough strength to stand back on her feet and continue the fight. When Erza finally manages to defeat Azuma, Jellal is seen sensing this, and smiles as a result.

Grand Magic Games Arc[]

One year after the disappearance of Tenrou Island and Team Tenrou, Jellal, while in jail, regains his memories and is saved from his impending execution by Meredy and Ultear. The three fugitive Mages form their own Independent Guild: Crime Sorcière, which is dedicated to driving away the evil in the world caused by Dark Guilds and Zeref.

In the year X791, five days before the start of the Grand Magic Games, Jellal, Ultear and Meredy send an anonymous message to the members of Team Natsu via pigeon, inviting them to go to a suspension bridge in the West Woods.

Once the group crosses the bridge, the three members of Crime Sorcière reveal themselves, and they have a brief reunion before they ask the Fairy Tail Mages to investigate a strange Magic Power surrounding the Grand Magic Games. In return, Ultear offers to enhance their own Magic Power by using her Arc of Time to evolve their magical containers, allowing them to tap into their Second Origin.

Whilst Ultear works on the others, Erza and Jellal go off to talk privately. She asks him if all of his memories have returned, with him confirming that they have. He tells her he's prepared to die if she wants to seek revenge for him killing their friend Simon, however, Erza says she won't because Simon wouldn't have wanted that. When he says that he thinks death is the only way to truly redeem his sins, Erza slaps him and pulls on his collar, accidentally causing the two of them to fall off the rocky ledge they were sitting on and into a large flower field, with Jellal landing on top of her.

While she is under him, Erza tells Jellal that she didn't think she would ever see him again and cups his face with her hands. They are about to kiss, however Jellal pushes her away and tells her that he can't because he has a fiancee. Erza asks if he loves her, and he says yes, so Erza tells him that he should live for her. When Jellal, Ultear, and Meredy later take their leave, Erza sees them off. She smiles and remarks to herself that Jellal is a clumsy liar, referring to the fact that she knew he lied about having a fiancée, but accepts his decision on their relationship.

When he, Ultear, and Meredy sit at their camp later, Meredy asks Jellal why he lied to Erza about having a fiancée. Ultear adds that it would be better for him to be honest with himself rather than continue to punish himself. Jellal replies that punishment is the rule of their guild, that he can't fall in love with people who walk in the light and all he wishes for is Erza's happiness. Ultear and Meredy then both tease him about his poor skill in lying.

After the Second Day of the Grand Magic Games ends, Jellal and Erza meet under a bridge in Crocus. The two talk about the absence of the strange Magic Power that's been felt every year. Jellal decides to inspect the organizers and starts to leave, and Erza tells him not to overdo it. The two smile, and Jellal departs, glad that Erza and he can finally have a normal conversation.

On the Third Day of the Grand Magic Games, Jellal makes his way to Ryuzetsu Land arriving after the rest of the Fairy Tail members and the other competing teams. When Erza sees him, she asks what he's doing there, to which Jellal replies he was chasing the source of the Magic Power, however, Erza berates Jellal for his poor disguise: Mystogan's mask and cap, and a pair of swim trunks. The two begin to talk, though in the midst of their conversation, Ichiya, who is running dangerously beside the pool, trips over and flies in their direction. In a split second attempt to stop Ichiya from hitting Erza, Jellal forces the two of them down into the water, and though Erza is saved, she becomes embarrassed to see that he grabbed her chest in the process, much to his embarrassment, prompting him to repeatedly apologize to her, though she bashfully states that it's fine. When Lyon and Gray later fight and freeze the pool, Natsu uses his Magic to melt the ice, causing a large explosion. Erza and Jellal are both sent flying, and she lands atop him in the ruins of the resort.

When Dragons begin invading the city after the Grand Magic Games end, Jellal spots Erza being surrounded by a group of Motherglare's minions. Seeing Erza fall due to her previous injuries from her fight with Minerva, he quickly rushes to her aid, destroying the beasts around her. Asking Erza if she needs a hand, he reaches down to help her up, though as he does, Millianna appears before the duo, spotting him and becoming wrought with rage.

Approaching the duo, Millianna is interrupted by Erza, who shakily stands and tells her that she has already forgiven Jellal for all that he has done. As Jellal stares on sadly, Millianna screams out all of his sins and vows to kill him, though Erza replies that doing that will gain her nothing. Before anyone in the group can speak, they are approached by Ultear, who, despite Jellal's protests, confesses to have been the one controlling Jellal all along, hence being the one responsible for the Tower of Heaven and Simon's death.

Soon after, Erza is unable to walk due to her injuries from battle, so Jellal helps her up and attempts to walk away with her. As they walk through Crocus, the two realize that the Eclipse Gate at Mercurius has been destroyed, subsequently returning the Dragons and those from the future to their proper time. Aware that they have both survived defending Crocus from the attack, the two smile at each other.

Sun Village Arc[]

When Erza turned into a child, she was worried that Jellal would reject her if he saw her in her child body.

Tartaros Arc[]

After Tartaros is dealt with, Jellal along with the new members of Crime Sorcière, cross paths with Erza who has begun to doubt herself. Jellal tells her she will be okay and that she should continue on her path of light and they will walk the path of darkness. He says their paths will cross again one day and by then, he hopes she will shine bright enough to erase their existence. With his last words before walking away, he tells Erza to move forward.

Avatar Arc[]

Erza tells her guildmates that she was investigating Avatar as a request from Jellal. She later informs him the mission was a success.

Alvarez Empire Arc[]

During the fight against the Alvarez Empire invasion, Jellal attacks two enemies attempting to harm Erza and Kagura. He then tells a worried Erza that he will not hide his face, as his guild has come to take out Zeref.

The group of three soon makes their way to the port and boards one of the Alvarez ships, but are quickly submerged in darkness. The Magic disappears and they find themselves face-to-face with Simon, who they are shocked to see is alive. Jellal deduces that the Simon before them isn't real, which greatly angers Kagura. Above them, Neinhart reveals that what they are seeing is the making of his magic, Historia. Neinhart attacks Kagura and Jellal jumps to save her, knocking the two below the ship and leaving Erza alone with Neinhart.

The ship's anchor falls on Jellal, knocking him unconscious.  Afterwards, Jellal is carried out of the water by Kagura, who preforms CPR to revive him. When Jellal wakes up, the two rush to Erza, only to find that she has been severely injured. Jellal shoots a murderous glare at Neinhart, angered at him for what he'd done to Erza. Jellal ultimately defeats Neinhart by casting Grand Chariot, with Erza commenting the beauty of the scarlet sky after the battle.

After Neinhart's defeat, Erza wakes in an infirmary surrounded by her friends, including Kagura. Kagura thinks back to how she saved Jellal and asks Erza for her forgiveness. Not mentioning what she did, she kisses Erza and states that it should be considered as her payment.

Later, Jellal and his guild battle August, however they are easily defeated. Jellal is questioned by August as to why he stopped being a follower of Zeref, to which he replied that a brilliant light illuminated his darkness as an image of Erza comes to his mind. Despite his own injuries, Jellal desperately attempts to stand, thinking to himself that he must protect Erza at all costs.

Jellal later appears when Acnologia goes to attack Erza and Wendy, shielding them from the Black Dragon's spell with his own magic. Erza is surprised to see him, and watches as Jellal attacks Acnologia with a variety of spells, but Acnologia emerges unscathed, revealing himself as the dragon of magic. Watching in shock as Acnologia takes the form of a Dragon, Jellal realizes that there is no chance of victory. The trio are timely saved by the Blue Pegasus guild, who crash their ship Christina into the dragon's side, buying enough time for them to board the ship as per Ichiya's instructions.

Mere minutes after boarding the ship, Jellal and Erza unintentionally fall into intimate positions as a result of the Christina's rough shaking due to dodging Acnologia's attacks. Their little affair is cut short as the trio are approached by Anna Heartfilia, who claims they can defeat Acnologia using a distortion in time called the Timelapse.

As Anna explains her plan, Acnologia proceeds to severely damage the ship. Jellal jumps out, activating his Meteor spell with hopes of distracting Acnologia. However, his attempts are futile, and Acnologia's roar nearly hits Jellal while splitting the sea in half. The close call leaves Erza panicked, and she hurriedly asks Anna why she hasn't yet opened the ravines of time.

The Timelapse opens, and Jellal makes an attempt to push Acnologia in, as Erza screams his name. Jellal continues to press forward and uses Meteor to ram himself into Acnologia's stomach, thinking to himself that he will be able to protect Erza by ridding of Acnologia.

As Jellal and Acnologia inch towards the Timelapse, the Christina fails and the ship plummets into the sea. After falling into the sea, Erza witnesses Acnologia grab Jellal and begin to crush him. She prepares to go rescue him, however, the destroyed Christina begins to move once again, to everyone's shock. It's revealed that Anna and Ichiya have taken control of the ship and prepare to ram Acnologia into the Timelapse.

Using the ship, Ichiya manages to free Jellal from Acnologia's grasp, and reminds the falling man that he has an obligation to make others happy. Shocked by these words, Jellal catches sight of Erza hurriedly swimming towards him as he falls into the sea. Erza is later seen supporting an unconscious Jellal as she witnesses Anna and Ichiya disappear into the Timelapse.

Erza later places Jellal on her lap after the two get to shore with Wendy and the Blue Pegasus mages. As Erza smiles at Jellal, the latter laments his survival. However, Jenny reminds him that he has duties to fulfill, with Erza nodding in agreement, stating that he must treasure his life. Their words in mind, Jellal looks at a still-smiling Erza.

A year later, Jellal, alongside the rest of Crime Sorcière, is pardoned by the newly crowned Queen of Fiore, Hisui E. Fiore. Hisui tells the group to look toward the future, as opposed to the past. Following the pardon, Lucy notes that Erza has started brushing her hair everyday, something she previously had no interest in doing.

— Jellal giving Erza her surname 'Scarlet'
“Erza... I can feel kindness from that name... I can feel kindness, cheerfulness and warmth... I'm sure you'll continue to hate me, but I can't help that. It's only natural. I will take your hatred and sadness... with me... You are... free!”
— amnesiac Jellal to Erza, after putting a self-destruction spell on himself upon learning about his crimes
“I won't allow it! I won't allow you to die like this! You've committed crimes! You must remember everything! Don't think you can be at ease without knowing anything! Don't expect to be forgiven by the people who you've hurt! Live and struggle!”
