Canon[]
Rover wakes as an amnesiac with past connections with powerful beings, such as Sentinel Jué, and the ability to absorb Threnodians into their own body without the aid of their gourd. Jiyan is the current General of the Midnight Rangers, directly appointed by Sentinel Jué, stationed in Jinzhou and often fighting on the frontline against encroaching Tacet Discords. They are currently allies on the same side, fighting to protect Jinzhou against Waveworn Phenomenons.
At present, Rover and General Jiyan have interacted frequently in both the main story and Jiyan's companion quest, which showcases their developing friendship and camaraderie.
Prologue: Utterance of Marvels[]
Rover awakes on Solaris-3, the third planet from the sun, in the Gorges of Spirits on the outskirts of Jinzhou City, Huanglong. They are found and accompanied by two other characters, Yangyang and Chixia, who act as Rover's guide and companions. Yangyang identifies Rover as a Resonator by the Tacet Mark on the back of their hand and the gourd terminal they possess on their person, Rover, however, has no understanding or memory of these concepts.

Rover's memories of Sentinel Jué
As Yangyang and Chixia lead Rover back to Jinzhou City for medical attention, they come across a large statue of Sentinal Jué, a dragon-shaped immortal being who serves as a wise guardian and guide and overlooks Jinzhou. Upon seeing this statue, Rover experiences a sudden hallucination and regains a strange memory of them standing face-to-face with Sentinal Jué, which Yangyang remarks as incredible, as the average person may never lay their eyes on a Sentinal without an appointment ceremony. The two currently known characters to have been appointed by Sential Jué are General Jiyan and Jinzhou Magistrate Jinhsi.
Travelling through the Gorges of Spirits, Yangyang, Chinxia and Rover reconvene with Baizhi at a dormant tacet field that suddenly and mysteriously manifested. Once Rover nears the tacet field, they hear strange high-pitched frequencies that nobody else seems to sense, not long after, the tacet field abruptly becomes active and incapacitates Rover's companions with sounds, separating with a barrier. Yangyang and Rover are left within the barrier and Rover is faced fighting with a newly born Crownless Tacet Discord.

Rover absorbs the Crownless
After defeating the Crownless, it leaves behind an Echo, which are lingering reverberations of Tacet Discords after they disintegrate. Rover attempts to absorb the Tacet Discord using their gourd terminal but is unable to, however, as the group tries to leave, Rover is suddenly pulled backwards by an invisible force, the tacet mark on their hand glows and the Tacet Discord is directly absorbed into their body. Rover's companions are shocked and Chixia asks if it is a resonance ability, to which Rover can reply that it wasn't and they have no idea what happened.
Baizhi states that absorbing echoes into the human body isn't unprecedented but incredibly rare, with the last case having taken place a long time ago, at the foundation of Huanglong. The group then receives a holographic message from the Magistrate of Jinzhou, Jinhsi, who highlights Jinzhou's importance as a safeguarding point for the rest of Huanlong, acting as a defender against Tacet Discord outbreaks. Jinhsi commemorates the soldiers on the frontlines but mentions a special "visitor" whom Jinzhou City has been waiting a long time to meet, and requests that the people of Jinzhou and soldiers assist this visitor when needed. Yangyang comments that Rover's vision of Sentinal Jué may mean that Rover is the visitor Jinhsi is talking about, and they agree that Rover should go to the city hall to meet the Magistrate.
Chapter 1 Act I: First Resonance[]

Sanhua Introduces General Jiyan
Upon entering Jinzhou City, Yangyang and Chixia lead Rover to the City Hall to meet with the Magistrate. However, upon entering the City Hall, instead of Jinhsi, Rover meets Sanhua, who is Jinhsi's bodyguard. Sanhua apologises for Jinhsi's absence and delivers a message and a handful of items on her behalf. When talking to Sanhua, Rover learns for the first time about General Jiyan, who leads the Midnight Rangers, the garrison, the outriders, the rearguard and the vanguard. Following this meeting, Rover reconvenes with their companions and decides to go visit Baizhi for their medical appointment and ask if she knows anything about the items.

Rover's encounter in the simulation training
During the appointment, from the data collected at the Gorge of Spirits, Baizhi claims that Rover's body "consumed" the Crownless Tacet Discord, as if there was something else inside them capable of absorbing frequency energy. Baizhi then has Rover enter a simulation to closer observe how Rover's abilities work, however, when trying to leave the simulation Rover loses connection with Baizhi, and instead sees a large, glowing moon and a mysterious Tacet Discord, which would later be revealed to be related to the Threondian of war, Ovathrax. Before they can fight, Rover awakes back in the real world. Baizhi explains that Rover's arrival may have revived abnormal frequencies accidentally captured by the simulation and manifested as a sentient being. However, Baizhi also proposes that the Tacet Discord may have actually resulted from Rover's own memories instead, but is unable to reach a conclusive answer without more research
Chapter 1 Act II: Echoing Marche[]

Guards at the city gates explain the situation
In this chapter, Yangyang and Rover attempt to leave Jinzhou City to head to Desorock Highland and find answers regarding some of the items Jinhsi gave Rover. At the gate, they meet a Monk named Jianxin who is trying to leave for the frontlines to find a soldier on behalf of the soldier's family, and she believes the soldier may be at the Midnight Rangers Desorock Highland camp. Through watching their interaction, Rover learns that General Jiyan is currently at the Norfall Barrens base, fighting on the frontlines and that nobody knows when the soldiers will return. However, Jianxin insists on going despite this, and at this point, Rover shows the guards at the gate their terminal, which has an access pass granted to them by the Magistrate. Seeing this, they allow Rover, Yangyang and Jianxin to pass through.

Rover's vision of Jiyan
When the group arrives at the Desorock Highland camp, they discover that the soldiers are overwhelmed, with many returning from the frontlines for medical care before returning to battle. Rover and their companions help the medics administer aid to the soldiers and learn that thanks to General Jiyan's reform preventing non-resonators from fighting the frontlines, casualties have dropped in number. At this camp, Jianxin finds the soldier she was searching for and parts ways with Rover and Yangyang. Having received the information they needed, the two decide to reconvene and propose that through the items, the Magistrate might trying to tell them about General Jiyan and the war against Tacet Discords. Yangyang and Rover discuss what to do next when suddenly Rover is overtaken by a vision of the frontlines in Norfall Barrens. In this vision, they see General Jiyan fighting against many Tacet Discords and unleashing his Qingloong ability, leading a charge against the oncoming Tacet Discords.

Rover tells Yangyang about their vision
Rover explains this vision to Yangyang, describing it as if they were seeing through the eyes of the Tacet Discords at the Norfall Barrens. Yanyang mentions how the frontlines are not far, and subsequently, General Jiyan is likely there fighting against the Tacet Discords, Rover is confused, remarking that they haven't even met General Jiyan before. Yanyang replies that it doesn't seem to be a coincidence that Rover received this vision right when they arrived near the battlefield which General Jiyan is leading an attack on. Yangyang states that something on the battlefield must be connected to Rover, however, they do not know what it might be.
Chapter 1 Act IV: Clashing Blades[]
Following a confrontation with Fracitidus members Scar, Yangyang and Rover return to Jinzhou City to meet with Chixia and discuss their findings. Solving the puzzle of the last item, a sundial leads Rover to a meeting place with Magistrate Jinhsi.

Jinhsi confirms Rover's vision was real
In this meeting, Jinhsi confirms that Sentinel Jué is absent and fears that it might mean chaos and destruction of Jinzhou. Jinhsi theorises that Sentinel Jué is being held captive by the Fracitidus, who plan to advance another Lament Event and asks Rover's help in apprehending Fracitidus Overseer Scar, who has expressed interest in recruiting Rover to their cause. Rover agrees to help. Jinhsi also tells Rovers about how a "hero" with similar abilities appears within literature dating back to the foundation of Jinzhou city and the prophesies of Jué. Hearing this, Rover tells Jinhsi about the vision they had of Sentinel Jué upon seeing the statue, and Jinhsi confirms that those memories are true, and says that Rover may be the hero who defeated a threnodian in the past mentioned in their records. Jinhsi tells Rover that they hope they will find answers at the Norfall Barrens, where the Threnodian, Ovathrax resides.
Chapter 1 Act V: Rewinding Raindrops[]

Jiyan is chosen by Sentinel Jué
After helping Jinhsi question and apprehend Scar, Rover reconvenes with their compaions, Yangyang and Chixia, but keeps Sentinel Jué's secret following Jinhsi's wishes. Following the leads provided by Jinhsi, Rover inquires about Jiyan, asking if there's any connection between him, Jinhsi and Sentinel Jué. Chixa comments that Jiyan used to be a military doctor and Yangyang retells the story of the Battle Beneath the Cresent to explain how Sentinel Jué appointed Jiyan and Jinhsi. Rover learns that the Battle Beneath the Cresent took place three years ago, and entails a fight against Ovathrax, the threnodian monster. Previously the midnight rangers were led by General Geshu Lin, however, after a battle that saw the first time that the Retroact Rain phenomenon was enhanced by threnodial power, causing violent hallucinations and phantoms, Geshu Lin disappeared after sacrificing himself to fight Ovathrax alone. During Geshu Lin's absence, Jiyan steps up to lead the soldiers to safety and is consequently selected by Sentinel Jué to become the next General of the Midnight Rangers. After recounting the story, Yanyang asks why Rover is curious about this, and Rover explains that Jinhsi told them to search for Jiyan in the Norfall Barrens at a certain time.
Chapter 1 Act VI: Grand Warstorm[]
The chapter starts in Jiyan's POV at the Norfall Barrens base, where he is conducting routine checks and preparing for oncoming sieges of Tacet Discords. A soldier reports hearing noises from the north of the base and Jiyan states that he will go to survey the area. Due to the Retroact Rain, phantoms of soldiers of the past linger in the base, Jiyan notes how a stronger connection to the area and prior exposure to the Retroact Rain enhances the hallucinations. As Jiyan passes through the base, he is confronted by a phantom of Geshu Lin, and they debate over acceptable strategies and the morality of being a General. After the phantom of Geshu Lin disappears, a soldier urgently arrives to report to Jiyan that they detected a strong frequency from a Tacet Field ahead of the base. The soldiers tell Jiyan that the moon is turning full as Jiyan had predicted and that the sky looks like how it was during the Battle Beneath the Crescent. Jiyan confirms that it's time and commands the Midnight Rangers to take their positions and prepare for combat. While waiting, Jiyan reflects upon the prophecy Sentinel Jue had told Jinhsi and Jiyan; that when the moon turns full, a roving traveler shall return.
The story returns to Rover's perspective as they talk with Yangyang, who believes that now might be the right time for Rover to head to the frontlines. Rover and Yangyang arrive at the city gate and meet with Taoqi and Aalto who inform them of the characteristics of Retroact Rain and its ability to create violent phantoms of fallen soldiers and tacet discords.

Jiyan decides to clear the way for Rover's arrival
Following a battle against an oncoming hoard tacet discords, Jinhsi contacts Rover and confirms that now must be the right time for Rover to confront Ovathrax. Taoqi says that she's contacted Jiyan to inform him of Rover's arrival, and Rover and Yangyang leave Jinzhou City for the frontlines. At the same time that Rover and Yangyang are travelling, Jiyan is defending the gates of their base against the incoming outbreaks of tacet discords. As soon as the tacet discords are dealt with, Jiyan asks Taoqi for an update on Jinzhou City. Taoqi reports that Jinzhou City is being evacuated to a safe zone and that Rover and Yangyang are on their way. Jiyan states that he will go to pick them up as soon as possible, commenting that he will create a safe passage for them through the Withering Frontline's tacet discord field.

Jiyan defends Rover from the Thundering Mephis
Rover and Yangyan reach the Withering Frontline, which they must pass through to reach the base. However, they are stopped by the Thundering Mephis that had been revived by the Retro Act Rain. The Thundering Mephis launches an attack on Rover but is stopped by Jiyan to block the attack. The three then work as a team to defeat the Thundering Mephis. Upon defeating the Thundering Mephis, Jiyan, Rover and Yangyang are finally able to talk. Jiyan apologises to Rover for not arriving sooner. If Rover replies that it's an honour to meet him, which Jiyan returns. Jiyan explains that Jinhsi and Taoqi informed him of Rover's willingness to help and he thanks them, commenting that he should welcome Rover with the proper formalities but is unable to and instead begins to brief them on the situation. Rover is surprised by Jiyan's trust, but Jiyan replies that Magistrate Jinhsi had advocated for Rover.

Jiyan declares to support Rover's upcoming battle
Jiyan provides Rover and Yangyang with some medicine to counteract the hallucinatory effects of Retroact Rain and informs them both of the situation. Jiyan says that he was told by Sentinel Jué on the day he was selected to be General to expect Rover's arrival and that they would return to the Norfall Barrens to reclaim their lost power from Ovathrax. Jiyan declares that he'll do everything in his power to help Rover succeed. Jiyan explains that they're running out of time, as Threnodian may recover and become harder to defeat. If Rover agrees calmly, Jiyan compliments their composure, and the three return to the base to strategise their attack. However, on the way back to the base, Ovathrax's statue resurfaces from the water, Jiyan comments that it shows its eagerness to attack them.
When they arrive at the vanguard base, Jiyan asks Rover to join him in planning out their strategy of attack. With the combined aid of Rover's inputs and Jiyan's experience, the two come up with a reliable plan, and Jiyan thanks Rover for their help. However, they run into another issue, Mortefi and Baizhi report that their anti-threnodian weaponry and disrupter equipment are being targeted by tacet discords, leading Rover, Jiyan, Yangyang and Jianxin to temporarily split up and head to the sites to defend the stations. After defeating the tacet discords the retroact rain begins to clear and Baizhi and Mortefi report that the anti-threnodian weaponry is functional. Jinhsi reports that she will authorise the use of the weaponry as the Magistrate and asks Rover and Jiyan to march onwards.

The disruptor breaks the Threnodian's shield
The group then advanced their attack, using the Disruptor to break the threnodian's shield, allowing them to pass into the heart of the Norfall Barrens. Along the way, Jianxin stays behind to prevent Tacet Discords from following Jiyan, Yangyang and Rover as they continue forward into the suspended ruins. They travel into the suspended ruins, taking advantage of the distorted gravity to reach the ovathrax's statue. At one point, Rover is hurt in the fray. Rover attempts to brush it off, but Jiyan asks Rover to give him their hand and instructs them to use his first aid kit. Jiyan tells Rover that if they are injured, they must inform Jiyan in time. Eventually, the group reaches the highest place of the suspended ruins, however, tacet discords are quickly closing in around them. Jiyan prepares to fight, but Yangyang stops him, deciding that she should stay behind to fend them off while Jiyan and Rover venture deep into the Ovathrax statue to defeat the threnodian.

The Dreamless appears
After landing in the Ovathrax statue, Jiyan and Rover are greeted by a deep purple light, in which Jiyan identifies the culprit is hiding. Before heading further in, Jiyan asks if Rover is ready, if Rover responds with enthusiasm, Jiyan praises his spirit and states that they will bring an end to the war. Upon entering further into the purple light, Jiyan and Rover are confronted by a Crownless, reconstructed by the threnodian's power, and a giant "second moon", which created it. They manage to defeat the Crownless, however, by using the Crownless' remaining power "the moon" creates a more powerful creature: the Dreamless, which Jiyan recalls seeing during the Battle Beneath the Crescent.

Jiyan blocks the attack
Jiyan says he'll shield Rover from the attacks while Rover attacks the "moon", however before they can do anything, it unleashes a powerful attack, which Jiyan jumps in to defend Rover from. Jiyan is left exhausted from the attack and collapses, incapacitated. Seeing this, Rover is angered and charges straight at the Dreamless using their mysterious powers, simultaneously unlocking their Havoc abilities and growing a singular black wing from their back. Rover continues their attacks on the Dreamless with Jiyan eventually returning to the battle despite his state.

Jiyan catches Rover
Rover unleashes one last powerful attack aimed at the weak point of the Dreamless' chest and causes a powerful reaction which sends them flying backwards, however, Jiyan catches them with a steady hand on their back. The Dreamless falls to the ground lifeless and in retaliation, the "moon" prepares to unleash another powerful attack. This time, Rover stands in front to defend Jiyan and the tacet mark on their hand glows, as a small creature appears and seems to absorb the monster attack entirely, leaving Rover and Jiyan in shock.
Jiyan's Companion Quest: Daybreak at Last[]

Jiyan declines joining the Riverside Games
Jiyna's companion quest is set at an unspecified point in the main quest timeline, with the quest opening to Directer Wenshu of the Jinzhou Riverside Games asking Jiyan if he would like to participate, to which Jiyan declines. Rover enters the scene and Jiyan mentions that this is the first Riverside Games held in many years, telling them to take a break and have some fun. Rover asks if they can participate and Director Wenshu confirms they can, Jiyan tells Rover that he is looking forward to their performance. After they talk some more, Jiyan excuses himself to perform a perimeter check of the surroundings, seeing this, Director Wenshu is disappointed, saying he didn't invite Jiyan for him to work and mentions how they could not have the borders under control without Jiyan. Director Wenshu then excuses himself to prepare for the Gulfpuff relay race.

Rover and Wenshu talk about inviting Jiyan
Rover wanders around the festival site and talks to the participating teams, eventually coming across two Midnight Rangers who have lost two of their teammates and are at a loss for what to do for the Gulfpuff relay. Rover offers to join their team as a qualified resonator, the soldiers are overjoyed and promise to treat Rover to barbeque with the prize money. However, they are still one person short, Director Wenshu mentions he thinks he knows someone to ask and Rover asks if they are thinking of the same person - Jiyan. The other soldiers are stunned and don't believe that Jiayn would be interested, but Director Wenshu encourages Rover to go and ask, saying there is more to Jiyan than they know.

Jiyan offers to help Rover
Jiyan is standing by the river, watching the Gulfpuff play in the water, when Rover walks up to him. Jiyan asks if they have found an event they're interested in, Rover says that they did but have run into trouble. Jiyan is concerned and tells Rover that he is there to listen, offering his assistance. Rover explains the situation and Jiyan is hesitant to join the team believing that Rover can find a more suited candidate for their team. If Rover says that they really want Jiyan to join, Jiyan gives in and says that it might be fun to join them. Rover states that they're officially a temporary team, which makes Jiyan pause in thought. Rover asks if he is okay but Jiyan says he's fine, stating that it's just been a long time since he heard that phrase. It is later revealed that ten years ago, a temporary team set a record in the Gulfpuff relay race and Jiyan was a part of this team.

Jiyan instructs Wenshu to evacuate the area
Jiyan and Rover join their teammates to discuss strategy for the relay. Rover is chosen to be the last runner for the relay and Jiyan encourages them to stay calm and relax despite the attention they may receive. Jiyan suggests allowing Rover to choose the name for their team, depending on the choices Jiyan has different responses but ultimately goes along with the proposed name. They then prepare to participate in the relay race. During the relay race, Rover takes the lead, with their teammates encouraging them through their terminals, however, upon reaching the ending stretch, Jiyan warns that something seems to be wrong with the Gulfpuffs. Suddenly, the Gulfpuffs go out of control, erratically flying into the crowd of onlookers. Jiyan and Rover subdue them together and Jiyan requests that Director Wenshu evacuates the Riverside Games.

Sounds from the Sonoro Sphere
After calming the onlookers, Jiyan and Rover talk to Mortefi, who contacts them via a holographic call, reporting unusual frequency fluctuation in the waters to the north, suggesting that it was due to this the Gulfpuffs went out of control. Jiyan is visibly concerned by the timing of this change happening during the Riverside Games. Rover says they should go investigate and Jiyan agrees. The two arrive at the identified abnormal location upstream and see a group of tacet discords surrounding a Sonoro Sphere that seems to be reciting pleas for help. Jiyan is concerned there are people trapped inside and says they should investigate further.

Jiyan calls the phantom soldiers soulless shells
Jiyan and Rover enter the Sonoro Sphere and arrive at a replica of Jinzhou city composed of remnant frequencies. Jiyan warns Rover to be extremely careful and to stay close to him as the environment is unpredictable. As they walk through the area, they pass memory projections of the previous Riverside Games, which Jiyan describes as soulless shells. A couple of the memory projections are talking about the temporary team Jiyan was once a part of as a new recruit, Rover asks if he is okay and Jiyan says he is fine but that it brought back some memories. Suddenly, they are attacked by tacet discords and work together to defeat them. Jiyan states that they are playing a game of imitation. Rover asks why they are reenacting the previous Riverside Games and Jiyan suggests that it ties back to the previous, temporary team, and admits to Rover that he was a part of that team. Before Jiyan can explain further, a loud bell begins to ring from the Regiment building. Jiyan reassures Rover and says they should go and investigate together.

Upside down cityscape
They enter the Regiment building which reveals a landscape with a city upside down in the sky. Rover asks if this is the manifestation of fallen soldiers or tacet discords and Jiyan confirms it is tacet discords and tells Rover to stay close to him. In the surrounding area are phantom illusions of fallen soldiers, who are all talking about the struggle to defend the Desorock Highland base from a tacet discord outbreak. Jiyan mentions how they lost many soldiers who stayed to defend.
Walking further into the building, they enter a fog-filled room with illusions of fallen soldiers pleading for help amid a battle. Rover asks what the phantoms are talking about and Jiyan tells the story of how a decade ago, after the Riverside Games, a tacet discord outbreak struck the Desorock Highland base. Due to the situation on the frontlines, the Midnight Rangers had to send their newest recruits, who managed to contain the outbreak at a heavy price. Jiyan concludes that the Sonoro Sphere is probably made up of the lingering reverberations left behind by soldiers who died at Desorock Highland, with tacet discords feasting on their remaining frequencies and mindlessly reenacting their memories.

Jiyan is angered by the illusion's mimicry
However, Jiyan says that it appears the remaining frequencies of the soldiers are still resisting, having led them here on purpose to stop the tacet discords. Jiyan and Rover fight their way through the tacet discords, eventually reaching a replica of Knell Square, filled with soldiers. Seeing this, Jiyan is angered, stating that the tacet discord illusions are reenacting their first lesson to the new recruits, which was to pay respect to fallen soldiers in Knell Square before being allowed on the battlefield. Jiyan describes Knell Square as the place where their careers as soldiers begin and end, angrily stating that these "monsters" will never fathom the weight of the soldier's sacrifices.

The soldiers final goodbye to Jiyan
Jiyan and Rover travel further to the bottom of the building, where illusions of the soldiers are apologising and warning them to leave. At the bottom, the soldiers are merged with tacet discords, becoming a Thundering Mephis. Together, Jiyan and Rover defeat the Thundering Mephis, freeing the lingering reverberations of the soldiers, who wave goodbye to Jiyan. Rover asks if Jiyan is okay, and he replies that he is fine, expressing his hope that the soldiers are now in a better place. Jiyan says that he's sampled some of the frequencies with his terminal and will deliver them to the academy for analysis.
Together the two leave the Sonoro Sphere. Jiyan and Rover return to Jinzhou city and meet with Mortefi, who tells them they have resolved the situation and prevented a tacet discord outbreak. Jiyan gives Mortefi the sample, urging him to be careful with it and keep it safe. Mortefi asks if Jiyan does not trust, Jiyan replies that he does but that this sample is important to him. Mortefi reassures Jiyan that they will be careful with it.

Rover and Jiyan meet at Knell Square
After meeting with Mortefi, Jiyan asks if Rover will meet with him at Knell Square and Rover agrees. In the evening, they meet at a flower field by Knell Square and Jiyan says that there is something wishes to do with Rover. Rover asks what it is and Jiyan explains that he wishes Rover to plant a seed of a resilient flower, named the Emortia, that he asked the academy to help him breed. Rover says Emortia is a beautiful name and Jiyan agrees, saying that the word represents both departure and return. Jiyan thanks Rover for helping him bring the soldiers to peace and explains that is why he believes Rover should be the one to plant this seed.
Rover plants the seed and reflects that maybe one day they and Jiyan can watch the sunset together, with the flower they planted beside them. Rover asks if Jiyan is okay, and he thanks Rover for their concern. Jiyan states that while every Midnight Ranger is prepared to die on the battlefield, he finds that helping the souls of the fallen ones return to their homeland is one of the few ways he can honour their sacrifices. Jiyan then turns to Rover and says he has one last request.

Jiyan's request for Rover
Jiyan asks Rover that if he were to die in battle and is unable to return home, if Rover could plant one of the Emortia flowers for him. Rover can promise or say that they will not let Jiyan die, to which Jiyan will smile and thank Rover regardless of the answer. The two part ways and Rover reconvenes with Director Wenshu, who shares a photograph he took of Rover and Jiyan at the Riverside Games. Rover thanks them for the photograph and Director Wenshu thanks Rover for bringing them together and preemptively invites Rover to the next Riverside Games. The photograph Rover receives changes slightly depending on Rover's gender.
