Joan & Toots is the family ship between Joan of Arc and Toots in the Clone High fandom.
Canon[]
Overview[]
Toots is the foster grandfather of Joan of Arc. Although the exact origin of their family is unknown, it can be assessed that Toots either adopted Joan when she was a baby or his son/daughter adopted Joan and is currently out of the picture, hence the reason who Toots takes care of her. Toots is a wise and knowledgeable grandfather who offers Joan sage advice on how to navigate her life as a teenager. However, as a blind man, he is rather incapacitated and finds it difficult to help Joan at times. Joan occasionally finds herself taking care of her foster grandfather and helping him with his disability. She often gets frustrated with his ridiculous decision-making, with how he does things like throw a party for Snowflake Day or give her a weird-looking makeover. She was especially upset with how he dated Cleo's Drunk Foster Mom, fueling her rivalry with her high-school enemy Cleopatra Smith. Sadly, her complaints often times go ignored by Toots as he's not only physically blind but also metaphorically blind to his foster granddaughter's struggles. However, Toots means well and would never do anything to hurt her, apart from that one time when he killed a bobcat, thinking it was her. Deep down, they love each other and look out for each other the best they know how.
Season 1[]
HOMECOMING: A SHOT IN D'ARC
Toots came home to see that Joan was upset about not being allowed on the school basketball team because she was a girl. Toots inspired her by telling her a story about how back in the day, he wasn't allowed on his basketball team because he was black. However, it's possible that the joke they were going for was that he was actually not allowed to play because he was blind. Joan hugged Toots and thanked him for helping her out.
A ROOM OF ONE'S CLONE: THE PIE OF THE STORM
Joan and Toots were very sad when their house was destroyed by a huge storm and they had to live together under the school bleachers. Fortunately for Toots, he started dating Cleo's Drunk Foster Mom, who allowed him and Joan to live in her house. Joan, however, was not happy about this because she hated Cleo and was now forced to live with her worst enemy.
SNOWFLAKE DAY: A VERY SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE DAY SPECIAL
Joan was irritated with her whole unconventional family for celebrating Snowflake Day, a holiday which she hated for being too cheerful and corporately-driven. Toots was mad at Joan for having such a bad attitude around the holidays. When Joan went missing, Toots ventured out into the woods during a snowstorm to go looking for her. He was then attacked by a bobcat, who he mistook for Joan. Toots would later shoot the bobcat and bring its corpse home, still under the impression that it was Joan, meaning that he willfully killed his own foster granddaughter. When the real Joan returned with a newfound Snowflake Day spirit, Toots was so happy to see her again and brushed off his alleged murder attempt on her like it was no big deal.
MAKEOVER MAKEOVER MAKEOVER: THE MAKEOVER EPISODE
Toots helped to give Joan a makeover for the upcoming winter prom. However, as a blind man, he completely messed up Joan's hair, face, and clothing. Joan broke down in tears, crying over how badly she looked now and Toots mistook this for her crying tears of joy and then left the room, acting as though he accomplished something. Toots was awestruck by the "sight" of Joan after getting another makeover from Cleopatra, even though he was just facing a wall.
Season 2[]
SLEEPOVER
Toots was unceremoniously killed offscreen in a clarinet-playing accident, which meant that Joan was no longer living under his custody and was now the foster daughter of Candide Sampson. Joan didn't seem to bat an eye over the fact that Toots was now dead and he was rarely ever mentioned again.
Fanon[]
Joan's relationship with Toots is well-favored in the fandom for being one of the most wholesome relationships in the show, as well as the most fleshed out fosterparent/fosterchild relationships in the series. Toots' behavior as a guardian to Joan is one of the many reasons why he became such a breakout character. This is also one of the reasons why fans were utterly disappointed when Toots was killed offscreen in the reboot, as it unceremoniously destroyed the family relationship between him and Joan.
Their family ship is often paired with the complications that come with Toots' het ship with Cleo's Drunk Foster Mom and Joan's rivalry with Cleopatra Smith. Shippers wish this complicated family dynamic could have been explored more in the canon series and fulfill this story's squandered potential with fanfictions.
The family ship is also rivaled with Joan & Candide, as those who were upset with Toots' death in the reboot, found Candide to be an ill-fitting replacement as Joan's parental figure. However, many fans do prefer the mother-daughter relationship that Candide and Joan have, loving the vitriolic chemistry the two have together and admiring its impact on the plot. There is a third party of family shippers, who believe that a compromise could have been executed in the canon series, wherein Candide could have gotten together with Toots. This not only allows both parents to serve as Joan's guardians and even create a curious new het ship. Again, this was never explored in the reboot, so fanfiction is working on taking care of that.
