Your Turn To Die[]
When Nao feels threatened that the kidnappers are going to take Mishima's dead body away, she runs away with his head out of the Pink Room. Kai takes her by the hand and pulls her into the kitchen, helping her hide. He tells her it's admirable of her to stand up to the kidnappers. He makes a request of Nao while threatening her with the kitchen knife so she'll be coerced into doing what he asks. He gives her his frying pan so she can go whack Sou on the head and retrieve Kai's laptop from the Hidden Room. He also threatens to give someone else the kitchen key if she doesn't comply.
In the Main Game, Nao reveals that she was threatened by Kai after admitting to Sou's accusation that she was the one who hit him. She tells the story of what happened, but when she gets to the part where Kai asked her to do something for him, Kai interrupts to cover for himself by saying he's astonished Nao would lie. He argues that if it were true he threatened her, she would have said so earlier since she has no reason to defend him. In response, Nao tells Kai that he's awful. Sara is forced to break apart their equilibrium, and it is uncovered that he did in fact threaten Nao with the knife to get the laptop. Nao believes that Kai didn't keep his promise after all and took the professor away.
Once the final vote is completed, Nao apologizes, implying that she voted for Kai and feels bad about it.

Kai's Story[]
In Nao's first fondness event, she comments that it's hot out so Kai advises her to drink water and rest. Nao is startled by his sudden appearance, to which Kai says he dedicates himself to "not making audible footsteps". Nao thinks that's kind of scary, and hearing that it's to get in the mindset of a homemaker, she thinks she wouldn't be able to be one. Kai inquires about her aims to be a painter, and Nao shares her worries that she doesn't have as much individuality as other students. Kai reassures her that she shows great individuality, even just in her appearance, and praises her determination to find a job in art. Nao then asks how Kai started on his path, and is shocked to hear about the intense training he was apparently born into. He jokes that now that Nao knows all this, he can't "allow her safe return", but she thinks he's serious and runs away in fear.

Fanon[]
Some people don't like Kai and Nao shipped romantically due to how Kai threatened and manipulated Nao, as well as the age gap between them. However, many agree that they could be good friends in better circumstances, especially after their interactions in Kai's Story. Nao is able to make Kai laugh, and though Kai seems a little scary to Nao at first she too finds enjoyment in his company.
