- Kate Sumner, our Behavioural Psychologist.
- —Pamela introducing Kate to Johnny English
Kamela is the femslash ship between Kate Sumner and Pamela Thornton from the Johnny English fandom.
Canon[]
Kate Sumner and Pamela Thornton, or as she is more commonly known, Pegasus, both work at MI7, with Pamela being the head of MI7 and Kate being her Behavioral Psychologist.
When we first meet Pegasus she makes it clear that MI7 has changed a lot since the first movie and it is now a much more modern state of the art intelligence. Kate was part of her modernisation of MI7 as Pegasus brought Kate into MI7 when she first joined, thus creating the role of Behavioural Psychologist that did not exist previously.
Kate and Pegasus are very different in both appearances and personalities. Kate is tall with straight blonde hair, while Pegasus is shorter with dark brown hair that curls at the end. Kate is also very introverted, calm, kind, and gentle, patient, but with an undertone of sharp emotional intelligence, while Pegasus is in charge of everyone, strict, bossy, frank, single minded, serious, and is quite intimidating with high expectations. However they both compliment each other nicely with these differences both aesthetically and during their interactions; they are both hard working and motivated.
Key Moments In The Movie[]
While Pegasus is telling Johnny English that she never wanted to see him back in MI7 because he was everything she came into the service to change, he accidentally knocks her cat out of the window while attempting to close it. When Pegasus turns back and looks at him, he pretends to be stroking her cat, while facing away from her and walking away from the window. Pegasus then says to him that she is impressed because Philby—her cat—never let strangers pick him up. A few moments after she says this, Kate arrives, effortlessly holding Pegasus’ cat in her arms, making it apparent that Johnny was faking it. Without saying anything, this shows that Kate and Pegasus are very close, since Kate is obviously not a stranger to her cat and probably spends a lot of time in Pegasus’ office or maybe even her house as we see later in the movie.
During another scene with Pegasus, she brings Kate to her house for the meeting with Johnny English and the Foreign Secretary. Kate had no need to be there but Pegasus brought her anyway and they sat near each other. They both spent the meeting sighing at Johnny English’s awful behaviour and frequently looking at each other for consolidation. Kate seems to always stare at Pegasus every time she is talking, even if it is not to her.
Later on, Pegasus yells at Johnny English for “trying to kill her mother” and lots of other stupid things he did, and Kate stands behind her as if to back her up and consolidate her.
When Pegasus is giving Johnny English orders on his way to meet Artem Karlenko, Kate is standing next to her, listening to her, and in a deleted scene, she she apparently gets extra dialogue. It’s during this scene that we start to notice how Pegasus likes Kate to always be next to her.
During another scene, Kate goes to Switzerland with Pegasus and the majority of the cast to have talks with China. Kate ends up realising that something is wrong and helps Agent Tucker to interpret the frequency of the mind control drug that will cause Johnny English to kill Xiang Ping. Pegasus, not really caring much about Johnny English doesn’t help him that much, other than running in and shouting orders at them to help him not die because he was still essential to the mission in her eyes. After this, Pegasus and Kate regroup, and have a small moment to relish in their success.
There are many scenes where Pegasus and Kate are together, and Pegasus often brings Kate to places she doesn’t need to be. For example when Pegasus goes to Buckingham Palace to reinstate Johnny English’s knighthood, she brings Kate along despite the fact that some of her other employees that did a lot more to save Xiang Ping than Kate did, didn’t get to come.
While at Buckingham Palace Kate and Pegasus talk to each other about how grateful they are that everything turned out so well, and Pegasus smiles fully for the first time in the movie, if you don’t count her small smile in Switzerland that was there for only a second after Johnny and Tucker saved the day. And the person Pegasus smiles at is Kate, who in turn smiles back at her, with a much wider smile as she is probably more used to it.

Fanon[]
Kamela is one of the more popular ships in the Johnny English fandom. It is rivalled by Simela, as these two ships strongly contradict each other. Some of the reasons it became popular are the fact that they contrast each strongly yet they get along so well. In addition, the subtle hints of closeness and the way they always look at each other might have intrigued fans. Both Pegasus and Kate are also very popular characters in the fandom, and are many people’s favourites causing them to have a lot of screen time together. Also, many scenes could be read into or added to for very good fan fictions, which could have helped the ship to get fans. They usually stand together and some fans see this as them looking like a couple. Lastly, and probably most importantly, the fact that the mind control drug was meant for Pegasus lead a lot of fans to imagine what it would be like if Johnny English hadn’t got to her in time and she had drunk it, which would result in Kate kissing her to revive her, this caused a lot of fans to be intrigued be this idea and start shipping it.
The Kamela fans mainly view the ship as sweet and wholesome, and imagine Kate being there for Pegasus when things get difficult, the two having fun, intriguing interactions, and bringing out the best in each other. However, some fans like to look into sadder and more dramatic ideas on the ship by thinking about how hard it would be for Kate to hide her feelings from Pegasus in a work environment, especially when Pegasus is in charge of her and completely shut down English’s flirting with her in a popular deleted scene. They imagine Kate has to deal with this inner conflict in silence while dreading the idea of Pegasus finding out. Or rather that they are both already together and have to hide their relationship because Kate works for Pegasus and she may be accused of favoring her. Other fans like to imagine that Kate is jealous of Simon because of all the attention that Pegasus gave him and is trying to be noticed by her, giving her a sort of “He doesn’t deserve her, I do so much more for her” type complex in some fan fiction. In addition to this, occasionally a tragic ending where Pegasus chooses Simon over Kate is found in fanfiction, and Kate has to get Pegasus back again with a lot of issues.

Trivia[]
- Kamela was the third of Johnny English ships to have a fan fiction of it published on AO3, and it was the very first of the Johnny English ships to have fan fiction of it published on Wattpad.
- The first fan fiction of them was about their most popular idea: if Pegasus had drunk the cranberry juice like she was supposed to, collapsed to the floor and was kissed by Kate.
- Because of this fan fiction, Kamela became more popular and more people started to engage with it, usually with fan art and fan fiction.
- Simela actually came before Kamela, though some people think it was the other way around.
