- “Go, Taichi!”
- — Shirabu, to Kawanishi, season 3 episode 9
KawaShira is the slash ship between Taichi Kawanishi and Kenjirō Shirabu from the Haikyu!! fandom.
Canon[]
Kawanishi and Shirabu are both second-year students at Shiratorizawa Academy and play on the school's volleyball team. Kawanishi is the middle blocker, wearing jersey number 12, while Shirabu is the setter, wearing jersey number 10. Kawanishi joined the academy through a sports scholarship, while Shirabu got in by passing the standard entrance exam. They have a close relationship, with Kawanishi being the only person Shirabu calls by his first name (Taichi). In Haikyu-bu, it was revealed Kawanishi called Shirabu by his first name (Kenjirou) also. They often celebrate points together by high-fiving.
Kawanishi and Shirabu have similar playing styles, favoring a more 'safe' approach rather than flashy moves. Kawanishi's motto, as described by Tendou, is "I won't fight a losing battle," while Shirabu's is "I will become the setter that stands out the least." Both players also utilize the float serve. Their conservative strategies make them reliable and consistent on the court. This is evident in the fact that they are the only second-year players among the regular seven on the team, and that they successfully maintained their positions when they moved into their third year.
Kawanishi and Shirabu share a similar approach when dealing with their underclassmen, agreeing on the idea of not coddling them, as seen in Season 3, episode 1, where Shirabu tells Goshiki off for "talking big". Later on in the series, Kawanishi expresses a similar opinion when an upperclassman defends Goshiki, stating, "I don't think it's good to coddle them like that."
In season 3, episode 9, after the match ends, the two are shown to be standing besides one another.
Fanon[]
KawaShira is a moderately well-known ship, neither particularly popular nor unpopular. In the eastern fandom, the pair is often referred to as the "lethargy duo" due to their laid-back energy. In fanworks, many fans like to portray them in a more playful and lighthearted way, often showing them acting silly, like typical high school boys. Fans sometimes depict Shirabu as being more expressive around Kawanishi. The dynamic between the two is appreciated for its subtlety. This ship has a dedicated, though not large, following.
