KevinMEI is the het ship between Kevin Kaslana and Dr. MEI from the Honkai fandom.

Canon[]

Background[]

Before the 3rd Eruption in the Previous Era, Kevin was a flirty, bright, and happy person. He laughed and smiled freely. His ego was a little inflated due to his popularity at school. His love for Dr. MEI was apparent — he even followed her into Fire MOTH just to be with her. As he sees his world collapse in the war against the Honkai, and becomes unable to hold MEI (due to becoming a MANTIS), Kevin becomes cynical and bitter. Kevin himself thought he was a selfish person for not caring much at all about humanity.

The other Flame-Chasers have noticed Kevin's deep devotion to MEI, and has spoken about it to him a few times. During their high school years, Su expressed concern that Kevin might become a "shadow of MEI" because he wants to follow her rather than just stumbling blindly by himself. Elysia remarked on a few occasions that Kevin had slowly "become an extension of MEI's will" due to his willingness to sacrifice others for victory like MEI. Mobius warns him about MEI's rational nature and says he treats her like an "omniscient god." Even Hua told him not to tie himself to MEI and later expressing little surprise that he would station himself close to her, but not for the reason she is thinking.

Although MEI is very reserved and cold, she privately displays love, empathy, and sadness to those close to her. MEI loved Kevin Kaslana to the point of creating a test tube baby using their genes, due to Kevin's condition of his body temperature being permanently lowered to -30 celcius. She also felt remorse at Kevin because she lied to him about her illness and for leaving him alone in a desolate world, which lead her to make Su promise to stay at Kevin's side for the next several thousand years. She is also aware that he might lose his way after her death, so she also prepared a contingency plan just in case he might go rogue and preemptively start project STIGMA.

Previous Era[]

KevinMEI Divine Key 3

MEI blushing at Kevin's antics.

In the Previous Era, Kevin and MEI both attended high school at Chiba Academy in Nagazora. Kevin was a transfer student that quickly grew popular among girls for his athleticism and good looks. However, Kevin was only interested in MEI, an aspiring scientist with no interest in dating. Kevin tried several childish antics in an effort to get MEI's attention, such as stealing her glasses. Although she ignored him at first, Kevin's actions had made an impression on her and she started to fall for him too.

When the 3rd Honkai Eruption happened in Nagazora, Kevin and MEI escaped together until they bumped into a member of the MOTHs, an anti-Honkai organization. The man had been sent to recruit MEI, as a MOTH had read one of her papers and recognized her talents. Kevin, not wanting to be separated from MEI, joined the MOTHs as a soldier.

While Kevin and MEI were on a boating date, SAKURA ambushed them with orders to assassinate Dr. MEI. Kevin protected MEI and managed to detain SAKURA, but was injured and hospitalized. They find out after interrogating her that SAKURA had acted on orders from a Fire MOTH superior who opposed MEI’s Divine Key project.[2] Realizing that internal opposition posed just as much of a threat as the Honkai, MEI arranged a private meeting with SAKURA with Kevin accompanying her. She brought up SAKURA’s sister and offered to keep the incident confidential in exchange for her cooperation and her sister's safety. This led to a tense standoff where SAKURA held a blade to MEI’s throat, only for Kevin to intervene with a gun to SAKURA’s head. To ensure her sister RIN’s safety, SAKURA agreed to the deal and later joined Fire MOTH under the black-ops branch Cocoon.[3]

During the 7th Eruption, HIMEKO became a Herrscher and devastated Australia in just one week. To fight back, MEI came up with MANTISes, soldiers genetically altered with the DNA of Emperor-class Honkai beasts. Kevin volunteered to join the first batch of subjects and had the DNA of Parvati, causing his body to permanently be negative 30°C. It made him a powerful soldier capable of unleashing the full power of the 7th Divine Key. But Kevin felt no joy, as he could not be physically close with MEI anymore due to his freezing body temperature.

Both played crucial roles in defeating the next Herrschers, with MEI taking charge and giving orders to him, while Kevin led from the front lines. By working together, they successfully subdued the 8th and 9th Herrschers, but their victory came at the cost of others' lives as both developed the mindset of sacrificing others for the sake of victory.

When the 10th Herrscher showed up, it took over a chef and tried to attack MEI at her restaurant but Kevin stopped her. Over the next four months, the Herrscher gathered 1,000 individuals, including a Fire MOTH soldier acting as a mole to attack key Fire MOTH structures. To defeat it, MEI moved her Divine Key research to a remote island protected by an elite guard led by Kevin and sent a message to headquarters claiming her new Divine Key was nearly complete. This led the Herrscher to send its remaining bodies to destroy the Divine Key facilities and recover the Herrscher Cores. Turns out, MEI had already completed and equipped the Divine Key when it stormed the facilities and she uses the Herrscher Cores to link with imaginary space and use its powers but the link duration grew shorter with each use and puts immense strain on her body. Fortunately, Kevin managed to rush back just in time to save her but this led the Herrscher to focus its attention on both of them, and one managed to injure Kevin.[4] After giving him a few words of encourangement, MEI borrows the Judgement of Shamash to kill the remaining bodies but using the Unnumbered Divine Key gave her critical Honkai poisoning.[5]

KevinMei Divine Key(2)

In the battle against the Final Herrscher, MEI sent 8 MANTIS soldiers, including Kevin, to fight the Herrscher so that she could deplete its powers with the Selene. However, this plan was unsuccessful, as the soldiers were heavily outmatched and the Selene only depleted 30 percent of the Herrscher's powers before breaking. Their only source of hope was that Kevin immobilized the Herrscher for long enough that humanity can retreat into cryopods and wait until the next era. While Kevin was on the moon, MEI's years of exposure to Honkai radiation was starting to take its toll. Knowing she wouldn't be alive to reunite with him, MEI had Su promise to make sure that Kevin never strays from the right path. After MEI's death, he was devastated and was almost going to kill himself, but MEI left Kevin a test tube baby made from their DNA and a letter telling him to have hope, urging him to go on because he was the only person who could carry the fate of humanity on his shoulders. Although Kevin didn't want to live on without MEI, this gave him the resolve to live on. He continued his fight against the Honkai in the Current Era in order to fulfill MEI's last wishes.

As time passed, Kevin became more and more cynical as Project EMBER, VALUKA, and ARK had all seemed to fail. There was only one option left: Project STIGMA. Him trying to implement this forces Su to use project Regulator, which was assigned to him by MEI in case he goes rogue, which led to him being sealed in the Sea of Quanta for 1500 years until he was released.

Second Eruption[]

Second Eruption 62

Kevin being reminded of his feelings for MEI

It’s revealed that Kevin (the Stigmata version of him) was the one providing Siegfried with the genetic suggestions that made him bloodthirsty during the final fight with Sirin. However, Kevin is taken aback when Siegfried manages to retain some of his sanity when he watching him extracting the Infinity Corridor after remembering that Cecilia is still trapped inside. Witnessing Siegfried’s determination to save his wife makes Kevin’s long-dormant heart race again, feeling the same passion from him as he did for MEI, so he decides to let Siegfried do as he pleases since he has already extracted the Gem of Serenity from Sirin’s body.

Current Era[]

Thunders Over Nagazora[]

Kevin travels to Nagazora to finalize his deal with Otto and arranges a meeting with Raiden Mei, who is the spitting image of his late lover. He makes a deal with her: if she joins the World Serpent, he will help her save Kiana's life. After Raiden Mei leaves following their conversation, Kevin reminisces on one of the dates he had with MEI during their high school years in Nagazora in the previous era. On that date, MEI and Kevin had discussed the stars. Unlike Kevin's past dates, MEI turned the conservation to humanity's place in the universe; though humanity is insignificant, they give themselves meaning. Kevin enjoyed listening to MEI talk about something she's passionate about, even if he barely understood it. This made MEI smile. MEI shares that she wants to be someone who can change the world and asks about what Kevin wants in his future. Kevin replies that he has no big goals, he simply wants to just live a carefree and happy life. He asks if he can come with her to MU university where she's be speaking at a seminar. When Kevin opened his eyes, he noticed much of Nagazora had melded with the Sea of Quanta.

Immortal Phoenix[]

Kiana and Bronya are searching for Hua at Mount Taixuan when they find a feather that triggers a memory of Kevin and Hua before the 12th Herrscher’s awakening. The memory starts with Kevin complimenting Hua but then informs her that MEI has assigned her to the Far East. Hua responds dismissively, and Kevin quickly realizes she’s still angry over the tragic events involving HIMEKO. Hua realized back then that HIMEKO had retained her mind after awakening and wanted to reach out to her. However, MEI ordered Kevin to kill HIMEKO before Hua could make contact. Kevin tries to take responsibility, claiming he had no choice because HIMEKO was a Herrscher. Hua snaps back that it should have been her decision to make. While she would follow MEI’s orders, she refuses to understand her motives even if he asks him to. She advises Kevin not to tie himself to MEI and reminds him that many Fire Moth soldiers died because of MEI’s ICHOR mods and the Keys of Domination, and questions if those who died would understand her.

After an awkward silence, Kevin says he’ll stay at the base—not for her, but for Fire Moth, emphasizing the need for unity in the fight against the Honkai, especially after the 12th Herrscher's capture. Once more he asked Hua to understand him and MEI's reasons for their actions, for the fate of humanity weighed on their shoulders. As they reach an intersection, they part ways as Kevin heads off to confront SAKURA and stop her from rescuing her sister.

After a few viewing a few more memories, Kiana and Bronya find another feather that shows the aftermath of the 12th Herrscher's attack, where it's revealed that it managed to destroy the last three cities. In a rare moment of weakness, he confesses to Hua that he didn’t care about the Honkai or humanity and he joined Fire Moth for selfish reasons, something he could never admit to anyone—not even MEI which filled him with intense self-loathing. Hua tells him that no one is born a hero and that he had done many good things as a MOTH soldier.

Wings of Reawakening[]

Hua[?] (later known as the Herrscher of Sentience) mocks Kevin for still living in the shadow of the past after Dr. MEI's death even after 50,000 years. She then claims that Fu Hua is similar to Kevin, both of them being attached to the past, and questions why he tortures himself over someone who's gone forever. Fu Hua defends Kevin, calling him a visionary for continuing to fight for humanity's future. Hua[?] proceeds to show Otto, pointing out that while he constantly claims he's fighting for humanity, he only truly cares about a dead woman. At first, she is shocked that both he and Kevin were able to form an alliance but then it all starts to make sense since both of them are fixated on the same thing.

Thus Spoke Apocalypse[]

In Chapter 27, Fu Hua vaguely recalls a memory from 50,000 years ago, where Kevin and MEI are observing her during the administration of the SWARA treatment. MEI notes that the treatment is going well. Kevin asks if he’ll be receiving the SWARA treatment too, but MEI replies that he doesn’t need it. But with this breakthrough, they’ll be able to give ordinary humans the power to stand against the Honkai.[6]

In the Memory Bank Recollection "Old Friend," Otto tells the Void Archives that he and Kevin are secretly jealous of each other, which is why Kevin backed his plan. He says that Kevin could do the same thing he is about to do (abandoning everything to resurrect Kallen) using Previous Era tech with his beloved but didn’t because he doesn't value himself and his burdens won’t let him be selfish. Still, Otto admits he envies Kevin more because Kevin has already accomplished 50,000 years ago something Otto was unable to do with Kallen (being able to earn MEI's love, following and completely supporting her ideals even after her death).

Chapter 28 has Durandal sent into Imaginary Space where she encounters a HOMU Doll who guides her through the Kaslana Stigma Space. They find a memory shard that holds the final conversation between Su and MEI. In the shard, Su rushes to MEI to tell her that Kevin is returning from the moon, but MEI’s body has already reached its limit. MEI thanks Su for all of his help keeping her alive until the end and leaves two letters—one for Su and one for Kevin. She lets Su read Kevin’s letter to understand her plans and their child but warns him not to let Kevin read the letter she wrote for him. In her last words to Kevin, she apologizes for lying to him about her condition before her death.

Elysian Realm[]

Dr. MEI isn't present with the Flame-Chasers but their relationship is referenced a few times via dialogues or recollection:

  • In one of Mobius's conversations with Raiden Mei in the Elysian Realm, Mobius refers to Kevin as MEI's errand boy. In the relationship charts, she thinks of him as MEI's follower.
  • After meeting MEI for the first time before the Third Eruption, Mobius asks if she has a boyfriend and correctly guesses that she has a crush on someone.[7]
  • Mobius, fully aware that she herself has pushed ethical boundaries, questions Kevin’s thoughts on MEI's rationality since she sees something potentially dangerous in MEI’s mindset. Mobius even goes so far as to warn him that MEI might actually be crueler than she is,[8]
  • Kevin underwent a second surgery conducted by Mobius, which he deliberately kept secret from MEI to avoid causing her unnecessary worry. He also preferred that she remain uninvolved from said project. According to her, MEI was far more nervous than Kevin himself during his first operation.[9] It's later confirmed that this surgery is Project Chimera.
  • Vill-V jokes that the only successful Kevin Killer available is Dr. MEI. [10]
  • While trying to ask MEI for the Key of Blankness, Vill-V realizes that MEI's not worried that Kevin might not stand a chance against her with her plan. [11]
  • Kevin is deeply worried that MEI might’ve been caught in the 8th Herrscher’s attack and trapped in an unending dream. It’s only when Elysia reassures him that MEI is safe that he finally allows himself to relax.[12]
  • Elysia shows Raiden Mei a photo taken during Kevin's birthday, she remarks that Kevin "reverts back into a big boy" around MEI. MEI, in turn, becomes a love-struck teenager again in his and Elysia's presence. She also tells Mei that Kevin feels sad that he's unable to hold her anymore, but just knowing that she cared makes him happy.[13] She also playfully steals lines that MEI was supposed to say to Kevin.[14]
  • In Elysia’s memories, the first time she met Kosma was after hearing he’d cried four times, deeply upsetting Kevin while mentoring recruits. She tells him that, aside from him, only Dr. MEI has had such a strong impact on Kevin.[15]
  • In a flashback between Kevin and Su talking about their dreams, Kevin tells him that he wants to become a hero. Su quickly figures out that this idea came from MEI. Kevin admits that he feels more comfortable following MEI’s lead rather than stumbling through things on his own. Su worries that Kevin's motivations were starting to revolve around following in MEI's shadow, that he’ll never be able to truly join her and will only end up in pain if he continues this way. It turns out that Kevin’s initial motivation to be a hero was an attempt to impress MEI and make her blush. However, MEI suggests that he can be a hero not just for her but for everyone. After that, when Su asks if he believes that MEI's conjuncture of the essence of the world is proven true, Kevin says yes.[16]
  • In Kevin and Su's chat history, Su found out about Kevin’s crush on a girl in their class through a former classmate. Kevin admits that she barely talks to him, so Su thinks that maybe Kevin came on a bit too strong and ended up scaring her off. Kevin also feels down that she didn’t come to watch his basketball game. Su notices that she's aloof compared to him but supports the idea of them being together. In a later date, MEI isn't his girlfriend yet but Kevin still wants to invite her to Eden’s concert along with Su, but Su jokingly turns him down since he doesn’t want to be a third wheel.[17]
  • When Raiden Mei asks him about his MANTIS surgery, she’s shocked to learn that he volunteered to be the first subject despite the procedure having a 0% success rate. Kevin just says that he trusts MEI more than he trusts numbers.

Project STIGMA[]

Chapter 31 EX shows more of their relationship while explaining about Project STIGMA. A flashback from 50,000 years ago shows MEI walks into Vill-V and Mobius' discussion and caught them having cup noodles as dinner. Mobius retorts back that someone else who also likes cup noodles at her home. MEI agrees but made him promise to not eat instant noodles of there are other choices, annoying Mobius and telling her not to show off.

Kevin sees a few flashbacks before he begins Project STIGMA, once again reminiscing on MEI's words about the stars during their date. The first flashback shows a young MEI having an existential crisis, asking her father about the meaning of life.

The second flashback depicts MEI, Kevin, and Su discussing the possibility that one’s consciousness may have existed repeatedly across different dimensions or timelines, even if one isn't aware of it. Kevin replies that if he can’t realize it, then whether it’s true or not doesn’t really matter. Su disagrees and says such a perspective still shapes one’s worldview. MEI follows up with a story of a rich man and a poor man sunbathing together which Kevin recognizes. MEI explains that while both are sunbathing, the rich man has many freedoms, while the poor man likely has only that one. Kevin complains the example just made things more confusing. Su clarifies that the same outcomes don’t mean the same processes and in philosophy, the journey matters more than the result. MEI believes parallel truths can expand understanding and reveals she has an experiment in mind—but lacks a “witness” to confirm it. Su doubts such a witness can exist if the universe cycles would destroy it's histories, but MEI suggests that if that isn't the case, an observer might find flaws to glimpse new truths.

In the next flashback, Elysia reveals herself as a Herrscher and MEI describes her as an anomaly, comparing her to an ice cube that somehow boils water. Elysia reassures MEI, telling her that despite being human and not universally liked, she has the power to lead humanity into the future. Elysia then adds that she can tell Kevin that she said this.

The fourth flashback shows MEI interrupting Kevin and Su's discussion. Su expresses that she should have notified him with the decision of transferring Project STIGMA to Kevin. She tell him that Kevin was the one who proposed the transfer and she agrees with him that Project STIGMA in his hands would amount to losing that option due to his morals, which they simply cannot afford.

The next flashback shows Kevin and MEI after she assigns Project S.A.V.E to the other Flame-Chasers. She asks for his opinion on assigning impossible projects to his friends while he receives the one with the highest chance of success. Kevin responds that people need an idealized aim, and he will do his best to accomplish the mission given to him. MEI says she's not asking about that then asks Kevin what he gains from fighting the Honkai. Kevin simply says that he is content seeing her self-worth. MEI felt sad hearing this and asks how can she be his only aim, reminding him that he is his own person and she would leave him one day since she's too weak to undergo the MANTIS surgery. She urges him not to let his purpose revolve around her and to live his own life in the future.

The sixth flashback has MEI asking Kevin what is the most beautiful thing about life. Kevin tries to flirt with her but she says that he can only fool her for three seconds and he can't answer with "meeting her". Instead, Kevin answers with during the time when he and his friends would skip school to watch Eden's concert. Mei didn't expect this answer, thinking he would repeat the words he said during their date in Nagazora, which she then echoes back to him. Kevin says that everyone has changed except for MEI who is still searching for her answers even after everything that’s happened. Mei shares her own perspective that life, while rooted in truth, gradually learns to understand and control that truth, though this can reveal the cruelty behind beauty. She also expresses her curiosity about existence, asking existential questions about life, the universe, and her own perspective. She then talks about various philosophical ideas, such as the concept of the universe being a repeating fate, and how every consciousness could be part of a common soul. Though Kevin struggles to grasp it all, he finds this both eerie and romantic and compares it to sports where it's lasting appeal comes from being untamable. She teasingly asks him if his girlfriend is much more insane that he imagined. Back in the present, Kevin says that the world is crazy anyways before he heads off to his destination to start Project Stigma

After Theresa is accidentally trapped by Project Stigma, she encounters the Will of Stigma and he reveals some of real Kevin's memories. One of these memories shows a conversation between Kevin and Mobius just after MEI's death. Mobius asks Kevin how he feels about seeing his son, Adam, for the first time and if he knows the future that awaits him. Grieving after MEI's death, Kevin despondently replies that Adam has MEI’s eyes, and worries that Adam might one day kill him. Slightly annoyed by Kevin's concerns that his actions might turn his son into an enemy, Mobius tells him not to drag their child into Project Stigma and to cherish the time with his son, reminding him that the project won’t take effect for millennia.

End of the World[]

Once Project Stigma was finally implemented, all the Herrschers except for Hua were transported to a Bubble Universe and Kiana, Bronya, and Raiden Mei were quietly guided to meet the Herrscher of Sentience who had discovered a still-alive MEI. MEI explains to her guests that the Bubble Universe they're in was created after their world’s destruction, and she's merely an alternate self of the real MEI, who is already dead when Project Stigma found their world. She made a deal with the World Serpent to freeze their world in exchange to serving as a place of exile for the Herrschers and becoming a tool for the organization. She spent the entire 50,000 years unable to move trying to find a solution to defeat the Honkai. Now, she offers to help the main characters escape the Bubble Universe in exchange for its survival. When they ask if this means opposing her own plan and Kevin, she reassures them it was already factored into Project Stigma and if it's Kevin, he wouldn't mind her decision. Annoyed, Senti says she’ll beat up Kevin instead, so MEI jokes it would be a memorable experience for him causing Senti to drop the subject.

She explains that time is running out before Project Stigma is completed, and they must reconnect her universe to an Imaginary Tree as soon as possible to save it and prevent her bubble universe from vanishing. However, after saving Prometheus and contacting Durandal, they discover that succeeding in this plan would actually cause her universe to disappear even faster. The girls quickly uncover the truth and confront her about the lie, but she calmly explains that their world will still float up the imaginary tree and be destroyed within 40 days regardless. She insists it's better for them to treat her and her world as mere tools which infuriates Senti, who accuses MEI of being cold and unfeeling, using everyone — including Kevin and herself — as tools. MEI explains that she has no choice but to act this way in order to lead and make the hard decisions.

Elsewhere, Hua left the resting place prepared by World Serpent and finds Kevin sitting alone amidst the ruins of the Finality. She remembers something Su once mentioned—that Kevin had always made a pilgrimage to this location on this date, never missing it for thousands of years no matter how urgent the situation or how strained he is from using the Cosmic Juggernaut. Kevin simply says that this is a promise that he must keep before continuing their talk. Later, Hua recalls Su's words about Kevin’s deepest regret of being unable to die when Finality came. At the time, she believed this regret only involved Dr. MEI, but she now realizes it holds a deeper and more personal significance.

As they say their final goodbyes, Kiana suggests they might survive through a singularity they will leave behind. Prometheus notes the odds are slim but MEI says she trusts in their ability to save the world just as much as she trusts Kevin. After the heroes escape the Bubble Universe, MEI and Prometheus take a final walk and MEI finally explains her actions. Prometheus notices that after the destruction of their world, MEI would stop everything she was doing on a specific day and head to a certain spot and do nothing all day. Prometheus had always assumed it was the day the merge of their worlds would happen, but realizes after calculating the timeline that they will disappear before that occurs. MEI explains that after she realized the Herrscher of Finality might cleave some bubble universes, she immediately shared this with Kevin. He didn't understand at first but he made a speculation and a promise for both of them: to visit the remains of the Finality and spend a day alone on the anniversary of the day they first met should either of them survive the Finality. He hoped a Bubble Universe would form where their counterparts would remember the promise, allowing them to be together again in some form.

Prometheus speculates that by manipulating the inevitable destruction of the Bubble Universe, MEI could create a brief moment where she can appear in the real world just long enough to meet Kevin one last time at the place they always promised to reunite before she disappears. Prometheus points out that Kevin could just have visited them anytime since he has the Cosmic Juggernaut. She also notes that the fact that World Serpent contacted them to use them as tools means Kevin is no longer innocent or ignorant, so she calls her blind. MEI isn’t surprised by Prometheus’s response and admits that she has always been emotional and a romantic at heart, even if her methods seem purely rational. This is why everyone in Fire MOTH is willing to follow her even if they won't admit it. She suggests that Kevin sent them there because he has finally understood the true purpose of Project Ember and everyone is part of it.

Prometheus asks why MEI didn't simply tell the heroes this, so she says that some lessons can’t be taught with words alone. She also clarifies another misunderstanding: since betraying one’s own world is something Kevin would do, she feels the need to do the same. Ever since accepting Kevin’s feelings, their relationship has never been fair to him because the war against the Honkai leaves them with little time for each other. Now having done everything she can to help humanity, she wants to do something for that "lonely boy". Prometheus says Kevin will never know, but MEI replies that it doesn’t matter since sacrifice is the nature of humanity. Before Dr. MEI can explain further, time runs out and she disappears first, not before requesting Prometheus to tell Kevin that "the one you betrayed the world for can do the same for you." Just as Prometheus begins to fade away, Hare intervenes and saves her by transferring her consciousness into a stigmata to allow her to remain in the real world.

Toward a New Tomorrow[]

Prometheus later informs Kevin about the events in the Bubble Universe and relays MEI's final wish. Kevin, unsure how to react to his old friend’s words, simply acknowledges this and repeatedly urges her to get as far away as possible to avoid being affected by Project Stigma. His indifferent tone confuses Prometheus, leading her to scan him, as she senses he remains unmoved by MEI’s dying wish. She observes that she was closer to being human than he was, a statement Kevin accepts. Since MEI had believed the Herrschers of the Current Era could carry humanity’s future, Kevin is willing to do his best to give them more time.

Hare interrupts their conversation, leading to a deeper discussion about Project Stigma. Realizing that Kevin will live alone for billions of years with no new purpose in life, Hare offers to kill him to help ease his suffering. She tells Prometheus that, unlike him, they can at least die like humans, and that she isn’t qualified to challenge such a “hero.” She gestures for Prometheus to leave with her. Before that, Prometheus slaps Kevin, angry that he didn’t shed a tear for MEI who destroyed her own world just for a chance to see him again. She understands that his grief has faded with time and can no longer express his emotions, so believes the slap was necessary. Disappointed, she turns her back on him, and Kevin silently watches as they both leave. It's later implied that he cried afterwards when Raven stepped on ice that reminded her of Rupert's tears.

Some of Kevin's memories return after entering the Spiritual Adam, including a conversation with a Greek philosopher from his time in Ancient Greece. He describes his own character as someone who is slow to act and often relied on others to make decisions and describes MEI as an extraordinary mind and a heart worth following, so he obeyed her decisions and treated her destiny as his own. In a later conversation, he admits he should have remembered everything she said before deciding his course of action but can't anymore.

After the fight with the Herrscher of Sentience, Durandal, and Fu Hua, Kevin recalls a memory of playing basketball in his youth while waiting for the heroes to present the results of their plans. He lines up for a shot but misses before Su and MEI walk in to remind him about their dinner plans. Mei tells Su she is used to Kevin being like that and just lets him be. Su said if Kevin is deciding his career, he should try other sports that are matched his talent. Kevin said those things aren’t as cool as basketball, and what really drives him is the moment of victory. Su remarks that others might find him shallow, prompting Kevin to ask Mei for her opinion. To his surprise, Mei agrees with Su but adds that Kevin is more likable this way before shyly running off. Kevin asks Su what he said to make Mei act like that, and Su replies that his expression was obvious before urging him to hurry. After one last attempt Kevin sinks a 3-pointer with his eyes closed, only to realize that both MEI and Su have already left, leaving him with no one to share his victory. Sitting alone on his throne, he wonders if the moment truly happened. He concedes that victory lasts longer than the moment, but without MEI or Su to witness his success, it feels hollow, and the joy he once found in it has long since faded.

After Kiana becomes the Herrscher of Finality and defeats him, Kevin slips into a dying dream where he reunites with his fellow Flame-Chasers, including those who are still living, having a picnic with him lying on the grass having a heartfelt conversation beside MEI. In a callback to their date, they talk about the stars again. This time, Kevin tells MEI that he believes the stars aren't the enemy but those represent hope that lights the way to the future. MEI calls him a romantic but she admits it’s exactly that quality that she loves about him. She thanks him for always pushing forward before promising that she and everyone will never leave him alone again. Kevin softly laugh for the first time and says that it's a beautiful day and with his final breath, tells Kiana that he'll leave the world in her hands before passing away.

Golden Courtyard: New Year Wishes in Winter[]

In this spin-off, Kevin and MEI are confirmed in a relationship, but MEI lives in a different city. After Kevin gets stuck cooking all the dumplings everyone made, Su mentions that Kevin actually learned to cook a long time ago for MEI, but work got in the way and he hasn’t had much time for it anymore. Kevin snaps a photo and sends it to their group chat, and MEI replies with a simple thumbs-up which made him smile. By the end of episode 2, Kevin’s second wish is to be in the same city as MEI so they can spend more time together.

In Era: Zero, Kevin and Dr. MEI have an entirely different dynamic. When Dr. MEI encounters this version of Kevin, they don’t form any romantic connection but are enemies instead. However, some aspects of their characters are reused in HI3, such as Kevin being the leader of Fire MOTH and undergoing a surgery performed by Dr. MEI that grants him his ice powers.

On April 20, 2044, after the meeting of the People's Union was exposed, Kevin led the Fire Moth to attack the vehicle of Dr. MEI and took MEI away. Both parties reached an agreement. After blasting the empty People's Union Building that had been defended by searching for MEI, Kevin released MEI and declared war on People's Union.

On April 21st, Kevin underwent a remodeling operation at MEI's lab and gained "the power to change the world". When the Fire Moth was pushed into desperation by People's Union troops, Kevin arrived in time. He used new power to cover the Fire Moth's retreat into the lower zone, repelling the Valkyrie troops of ME Agency. Later, The Fire Moth announced the existence to the whole world, and People's Union had to retreat due to the resistance of the lower zone and the provisions of the treaty.

Children[]

Adam Kaslana
Adam Kaslana

Because Kevin couldn't naturally have children, MEI created a test-tube child using their combined genes. Kevin named the child Adam, a signifier of the new era of humanity that was to come. Adam's conception marked the start of the Kaslana lineage.

Quotes[]

Kevin“Hahahahahaha~”
MEI“What’s so funny?”
Kevin“Well, nothing. I just find this to be quite refreshing. When I dated other people, we talked about stars by discussing horoscopes and blood types, stuff like that. You’re the only one who would talk about the universe and humanity.”
MEI“...”
Kevin“…I guess what I wanna say is that you’re special. Unique. Do keep going. I’m actually interested in this topic and would like to learn more. ”
— Kevin and MEI's date - Chapter 17, Thunders Over Nagazora
MEI“I’m curious about something.”
Kevin“What is it?”
MEI“You look like a person who’d be uninterested in such topics. I’m surprised you’re actually listening. Do you think there’s any worth to our conversation? And please, do give me an honest answer.”
Kevin“…Any worth to our discussion? I don’t really know. And honestly, I think I only understood about half of the things you said… But... I really like how serious you look when talking about this. That’s why… I hope I can keep listening to you.”
MEI“That’s it? Is that the only reason?”
Kevin“Yeah”
— Kevin and MEI's date - Chapter 17, Thunders Over Nagazora
“See, my old friend… he’s pathetic, because he’s been living under the shadow of the past ever since MEI died. You are just like him. What’s the point of torturing oneself for the past? The deceased are gone forever.”
— Hua[?] referring to Kevin, Chapter 21, Wings of Reawakening
Raiden Mei“Kevin, it seems to me the MANTIS tech wasn’t well-developed until the end. The side-effects are all different, but each one of them is serious.”
Kevin“Correct”
Raiden Mei“Anyway, you were the first recipient. What was the success rate back then?”
Kevin“Zero”
Raiden Mei“...You took it nonetheless.”
Kevin“I trust MEI more than those numbers.”
— Kevin - About Myself 2
Mobius“Tell me, lab rat, what’s Kevin like in the future?”
Raiden Mei“…Just like the Kevin you know.”
Mobius“Still an errand boy?”
Raiden Mei“Errand boy?”
Mobius“Oh right, with Dr. MEI gone, he can’t be her errand boy anymore. But I bet he’s still cold and hellbent on his own ideas. Or should I say Dr. MEI’s ideas?”
Raiden Mei“I don’t know whose path he’s following, but I can feel his strong conviction.”
Mobius“He’s such a loyal boy.”
— Mobius - About Kevin
Kevin“No one watches me play basketball anyway”
Su“You mean that girl you like doesn't watch”
Kevin“...What do you think of her?”
Su“She seems kinda aloof compared to you. But from what you said about her, she seems like a good girl. Maybe you two would make a good couple”
Kevin“Hehe, hope so.”
— Singer's Memory "Chat History"
“Sorry, Kevin… I told you that I had recovered and that we’d be together when you came back from the moon… Did you know I was lying? But you still chose to believe…”
— MEI apologizing to Kevin before her death - Chapter 28, End of the World/Second Key Chapter 11 - No Matter the Cost
MEI“When I study the Honkai and humanity’s fate, I at least feel the joy of discovery. But what can you gain from something to which you don’t aspire?”
Kevin“ I’m content with seeing you realize your self-worth.”
— Chapter 31 EX, Project STIGMA
MEI“Kevin. What do you think is the most beautiful thing about life?”
Kevin“You want to hear the truth?”
MEI“Your lie can only fool me for three seconds. Oh, and you can’t answer “meeting me”.”
Kevin“Alright. Let me think…”
— Kevin trying to flirt with MEI - Chapter 31 EX, Project STIGMA
“So, is your girlfriend more insane than you imagined?”
— MEI to Kevin - Chapter 31 EX, Project STIGMA
“Tell that man… “The one who you betrayed the world for, can do the same for you.””
— MEI requesting Prometheus to tell Kevin her last words - Chapter 32, End of the World
“I once had a friend. Perhaps he was talented in certain aspects, but he was quite slow and became used to relying on the decisions of others. It was due to his character. Thus, he chose an outstanding mind, a heart worth following, and then he obeyed the person’s decisions and treated that person’s destiny as his own.”
— Kevin indirectly describing himself and MEI to the Philosopher - Chapter 35, Toward a New Tomorrow
MEI“What about now, have you changed your mind?”
Kevin“You’re right. But, my current self wants to believe that what those lights bring aren’t threats, but hope that opens up the future.”
MEI“I almost forgot that you were such a romantic. Firm, brave, yet unable to let go of your innocence.”
Kevin“…Sorry.”
MEI“There’s no need to say sorry. I like what you really are. It’s also because of this that we entrusted everything to you.”
— Both recalling their conversation to their first date in Nagazora - Chapter 35, Toward a New Tomorrow
MEI“Don’t worry. This time, I will be with you. Everyone will be with you. We won’t ever leave you on your own again.”
Kevin“…Haha. What beautiful weather”
— MEI reassuring him he will never be lonely again - Chapter 35, Toward a New Tomorrow

Fanon[]

KevinMEI, along with SiegCeci, is one of the most popular m/f ships in the Honkai Impact 3rd fandom. It is liked for their tragic story and their undying love for each other even after 50,000 years. However, there is a subset of the fandom that dislikes the ship, believing Kevin's devotion to MEI to be toxic.

Since Kevin is an Alternate Universe gender-bent Kiana, people joke that they're just an extension of Kiamei, proving that no matter the timeline or version, Mei and Kiana always seem to end up paired together. Many see their confirmed relationship as a sign that Kiamei is canon too if not for censorship, which is a big reason why it's so widely accepted especially in the Eastern Fandom. However, a vocal minority prefers all versions of Mei to be paired only with a female Kiana, with some even denying their relationship until it was confirmed in-game.

KevinMEI shippers have often come in conflict with KevinSu and Elykevin shippers who believe that their pairings have shown stronger onscreen chemistry in contrast to the former. Their arguments usually revolve around Dr. MEI's personality, with some even claiming that she doesn't truly love Kevin due to her rational nature and is only using him for her own purposes.

While there is no direct confirmation, some shippers like to believe that Kevin recognized Raiden Mei as the reincarnation of his lover, citing the sadness in his eyes when they first met but he doesn't have a reaction to this because he is already emotionally burnt out and realized that she is not the MEI he once knew. It also helps that he immediately remembers his MEI after Raiden Mei left the area.

It's widely accepted in the fandom that the Kaslana lineage inherited their atrocious cooking skills from Dr. MEI, while Kevin is actually a decent cook. This is further supported by the Golden Courtland Anime, where Su says he learned to cook for her but doesn't have time for it anymore.

There's a tendency for fans to affectionately refer to Kevin and MEI as "Grampa" and "Grandma", especially in AU fanworks. This nickname stems from being the the progenitors of the House Kaslana.

In the fandom, it's a well-known joke that Kevin is an absolute simp for MEI since he is willing to go to great lengths for her. Some even compare it to Otto's obsession with Kallen, though Kevin’s devotion is generally viewed in a more sincere and less problematic way. MEI is typically portrayed as the dominant one in their relationship.

It currently has 77 romantic works and 10 platonic works on AO3.

Trivia[]

  • In the Chinese Honkai fandom, Kevin is referred to as a "Pure Love Warrior" (纯爱战士), a fandom slang where a male character is deeply and wholeheartedly in love with only one person, often to the point of obsession or self-sacrifice that he could do good or evil choices. He (alongside Otto) has also ascended as a "Battle God of Pure Love" (纯爱战神), someone who takes that devotion to legendary extremes and is capable of doing unimaginable things out of love. This term became popular because most male characters in Chinese Sci-Fi and fantasy media have multiple love interests, and in Hoyoverse games, confirmed romances are rare, so characters archetypes like Kevin and Otto who are completely devoted to one person stand out and become iconic within the community.
  • Even though it’s clear they’re together early on from the Divine Key and Second Key manga, MEI straight-up confirms their relationship status in Chapter 31 EX.
  • Kevin and MEI are shown together in the background of the animated short "Graduation Trip" cinematic that heavily focuses on the various relationships across Part 1, including some implied and confirmed pairings like SakuKallen, DuraRita, Bronseele and SiegCeci.

  • In one of the Stigmata (B): "MOTHs Days Set," MEI is shown sleeping on her desk, and on that desk there is a framed photo of her and Kevin. In the episode "Golden Court: Winter New Year's Wishes", Kevin is shown typing on his computer and there is also a framed photo of MEI on his desk.
  • Kevin learned how to cook because of MEI.[18]
  • It's implied during Mobius and MEI's conversation in Chapter 31 EX that Kevin and MEI live together.
  • Prometheus implies in chapter 39 that Kevin and MEI wanted to have go on a trip and have a wedding, but the threat of Honkai made it impossible for them to do so.
  • In the Forest Capriccio Concert, Kevin and MEI's relationship is highlighted in the first part of his song using manga panels and some scenes from the Part 1 final trailer to tell their story, alongside a voiced apology from MEI to Kevin. The accompanying soundtrack, titled Lyin (See You in the Next World), was originally featured in Girls Gun Z, Mihoyo's previous game.
  • In Girls Gun Z, the predecessor to Honkai Impact 3, Kevin is Kiana's male alternate universe counterpart who falls in love with Raiden Mei, who Dr. MEI is a variant of, though their relationship differs depending on the story. Unlike in HI3, he is treated more of a joke character who who constantly competes with Kiana for Mei's affection, especially in the Honkai Gakuen 4-Koma.
    • In Otherworld, a time limited event, Kiana stumbles into an alternate world where Kevin is desperately trying to save Mei from her corruption, and the most notable moment is when Kiana crashes his wedding with Mei. This story was later rewritten with significant changes into a light novel. In this version, Kevin is searching for a timeline where he doesn't have to kill Raiden Mei who always turns into a Herrscher.
  • In the Japanese dub, Raiden Mei and MEI are spelled differently but both are still called "Mei." Kevin never calls MEI by her professional title (Dr. MEI) and, unlike other characters who sometimes call Raiden Mei simply as "Mei," he always calls Raiden Mei by her full name to distinguish them apart.
