Kidane is the femslash ship between Kida Nedakh from the Atlantis: The Lost Empire fandom and Jane Porter from the Tarzan fandom.
Canon[]
As Kida and Jane come from two different canons, they have never met. Jane shares many similarities with Kida's canon love interest, Milo Thatch, while Kida bears some similarities to Jane's canon love interest, Tarzan. Much like Milo, Jane is a scholar. She travels to a virtually undiscovered area of the world in an effort to expand her knowledge. Kida, much like Tarzan, is an inhabitant of an undiscovered land and has no understanding of modern day social customs. While Milo teaches Kida about the surface world, Jane teaches Tarzan about Victorian England.
Both women are seen as headstrong and intelligent. They each have a particularly close relationship with their father, with their mothers having died at some point before their respective films. They both seem to have a craving for adventure and knowledge, although Kida is mostly unable to act on that as she is forced to live in the lost world of Atlantis.
There is debate over the time period in which the Tarzan franchise is set. While the film implies that the story takes place during the late Victorian period, the later cartoon series pushes the time period to World War I era. The Atlantis franchise is set in 1914, the beginning of WWI. Kida later comes to the surface world in Atlantis: Milo's Return, set not long after the first film. This means that the time period of the two films align, although Kida spends her time in Europe and the United States while Jane now lives permanently in Africa.
Kida and Jane both appear in the 100th anniversary short Once Upon a Studio, although they do not interact with each other.
Fanon[]
Kidane is a rarepair, although it is still one of the more popular ships for both Kida and Jane. Like most Disney crossover ships, it is more popular as fan art than it is as fan fiction.
Shippers generally tend to put Jane into the Atlantis universe, either having her join the expedition crew or having her replace Milo entirely. This allows for Kida and Jane to meet one another, and for Jane to teach Kida much like she once taught Tarzan. Fans tend to see Jane as a female version of Milo, and believe that inserting her into the story would do little to alter the overall plot.
There are currently 3 works for this pairing on AO3.
