- I fear this is as much power as is mine to display, Kinich... But I swear on my name, K'uhul Ajaw, that upon my accession to your form, you shall all be avenged.
- —Ajaw to Kinich upon the latter's death
Kinich & Ajaw is the friend ship between Kinich and K'uhul Ajaw from the Genshin Impact fandom.
Canon[]
Ajaw is a powerful bona fide relic from the era of dragons, who had been sealed away in a ruin. One day, he was found by Kinich who he made a pact with: in exchange for giving Kinich a limited amount of his power, Kinich's body would be his to use once he dies. As agreed to, Ajaw now accompanies Kinich wherever he goes. Although travel companions, Ajaw views Kinich as his servant and always bickers with him, much to Kinich's annoyance.
Kinich was once invited to join a team who had set their sights on exploring the ruin Ajaw had been sealed in. When entering, Kinich and his team had realized the place was filled with dangerous monsters and mechanisms. This led many members to die or become heavily injured, leaving Kinich as the sole survior. He reached the depths of the ruin, where he encountered Ajaw. Kinich quickly realized his power may be useful, and Ajaw longed to be free and see the outside world. Both yearning for things the other had, they agreed to sign a contract. Ajaw would listen to Kinich's commands, and give him his power on a conditional basis, and in restricted amounts. In exchange, Kinich would have to free Ajaw, and give his body to the latter upon his death. To fulfill his end of the contract, Kinich obtained the enigmatic engraved wristband Ajaw's true form was sealed in, with the latter now taking a new form as a projection created from phlogiston.
Once during the Night Warden Wars, all of Kinich's comrades fell until he was the last one standing. This left him outnumbered by monsters, leading to him becoming gravely injured. As monsters continued to attack him, he heard Ajaw speak solemnly for the first time. Ajaw told Kinich he had given him all the power he could, but swore to avenge him. This made Kinich laugh out loud, as he fought against the monsters near him. He was eventually clawed in the chest, ultimately leading to his death. Seeing this, Ajaw closed his eyes in respect for all the warriors who had died. Opening them, he witnessed Kinich suddenly being resurrected, and receiving a Dendro Vision. Hoping to use his dead body, Ajaw became visibly angry at the sight of Kinich's resurrection, complaining and throwing a stone at him.
Fanon[]
Kinich & Ajaw have gained lots of attention from the fandom. Fans enjoy their constant bickering, and the way Ajaw always makes fun of Kinich. Ajaw is featured insulting Kinich in many of the latter's voicelines. Their dynamic is considered entertaining, compared to the many other playable charcters who show genuine care for their companions. However, the pair has received some negativity after it was revealed Ajaw actually wants Kinich dead, stated in Kinich's vision story and serveral voicelines. This has ruined the funny factor of Ajaw's attitude towards Kinich for some fans. Despite this, Ajaw still showed remorse at the sight of Kinich's death, contradicting his willingness to let him die. This led fans to think Ajaw may actually care for him, at least a bit. Currently, Kinich & Ajaw have 120+ works on AO3.
