Nanamegi showed me my individuality, the same individuality that was once called "creepy"... it might be difficult for me to accept myself as a whole right away, but at the very least, when I listen to the song Nanamegi made for me, I can begin to love my own world. I can breathe freely.
—Kiroku in "Vividly Colorful Imagination" Track 11

KiroNana is the slash ship between Kiroku Kinugawa and Nanaki Nanamegi from the 18TRIP fandom.

Canon[]

Kiroku and Nanaki are both members of HAMA Tours' Noon Team and part of the unit Day2, along with Akuta Isotake, Muneuji Kaguya and Ushio Kurama. Kiroku is the mayor of HAMA's Ward 6, and Nanaki Ward 7. They are both second-year students at Hama Asunaro High School, and active members of its Community Revitalization Club. Additionally, they serve as the presidents of their own respective school clubs: Kiroku the Magnum Opus Traditional Art Club, and Nanaki the Mellow & Lazy Light Music Club.

Their official pair name is "Emergency Staircase Chill-Out Friends." According to the Day2 relationship chart posted on 18TRIP's official X account, both Kiroku and Nanaki find the other’s presence "calming."

They, along with the other members of Day2, were brought together following the explosion incident at the old school building.

Main Story[]

002: Bitter Sweet Sixteen[]

After the old school building incident, the Community Revitalization Club is formed, with Kiroku, Nanaki, Akuta, Muneuji and Ushio appointed as its members. Following the Morning Team's successful tour, HAMA Tours is now looking to recruit five more individuals to become ward mayors and form the Noon Team, with the Community Revitalization Club members as prime candidates. They are invited to attend a study trip to Shodoshima to gain work experience and understand the responsibilities of a ward mayor, after which they are to be graded based on their individual performances to judge whether or not they have the capability to take on the role.

Upon arrival, they are shown the inn where they’ll be staying, and a game of paper sumo is held to decide the room assignments. Akuta, as the winner, claims the only single room. The Chief then asks Nanaki, who placed second, if he’s okay with sharing a room with Kiroku, who placed third. Because he has to share with someone else anyway, Nanaki agrees, saying that he doesn't mind since it's comfortable being around Kiroku, causing Kiroku to blush slightly.

The five ward mayor candidates are each assigned individual tasks to help prepare for the island’s summer festival. Kiroku is tasked with painting decorative lanterns, while Nanaki is in charge of managing the sound system for the fireworks show. Though initially unmotivated, Nanaki begins to take his role more seriously after a heart-to-heart with the Chief about his past experiences with unrequited love, the Chief's encouragement quickly planting the seed for a new crush. Meanwhile, Kiroku is struggling to make progress on the lanterns, weighed down by past trauma surrounding his creative expression and a fear of being misunderstood, rooted in a falling-out with a childhood friend who once called his art "creepy." The pressure to meet the expectations of Akuta, who had earlier praised his art wholeheartedly, only adds to this.

A while later, concern begins to grow over how little progress Ushio has made with his part of the festival preparations. Nanaki calls him out for being uncooperative, pointing out that even Kiroku has been giving it his all despite his own struggles. Kiroku is taken aback that Nanaki noticed. Nanaki simply smiles and says it was only natural since, after all, they're sharing a room. Kiroku gives a small smile in return.

The day of the festival arrives, but morale is at an all-time low with the news that it might be cancelled following reports of an 80% chance of rain. Preparations go ahead regardless, and Kiroku's lantern is hung up, albeit unfinished. Curious, Nanaki goes to check on him. When he sees the lantern, he pauses, and Kiroku quietly braces himself for rejection. When Nanaki is about to give his opinion, Kiroku suddenly blurts out that he was told it was okay to hang the lantern up even though it wasn’t finished, but struggles to properly get the words out. Nanaki understands him anyway and says he agrees with that decision, adding that while it’s a shame the lantern might get ruined by the rain, he really likes it, and that he'd even keep it for himself if he could. He immediately recognizes that the design was inspired by the alien egg they've been taking care of throughout the trip, going on to say that he enjoys its "creepy-cute" charm. Kiroku is momentarily happy at the praise, but then convinces himself that Nanaki didn't really mean it since, unlike Akuta, Nanaki is popular and probably used to saying things just to be nice. Still, he admits to himself that, even if the compliments weren't sincere, it doesn’t hurt that much.

Thanks to Akuta and Muneuji’s efforts, the rain is stopped just in time to save the festival, though it had required launching the egg into the sky aboard a rocket to disperse the clouds, and Muneuji believes it exploded to pieces as a result. When Nanaki learns what happened, he suggests they keep it from Kiroku, having noticed how attached Kiroku has gotten to the egg.

Quotes[]

Fanon[]

Generally, KiroNana is considered a rarepair in the fandom. This is likely due to Nanaki’s canon crush on the protagonist, as well as the fact that it took five months after the game’s release for the pair to receive any significant spotlight. Additionally, since it is a relatively quiet pairing compared to others involving Kiroku and Nanaki, it often slips under the radar unless fans specifically seek it out. In the Eastern fandom, people tend to view their relationship platonically, though many have stated that what they share is more than just a simple friendship. Despite being viewed more favorably as a romantic pairing in the Western fandom, they are more commonly shipped alongside other pairings in Day2 as PolyDay2.

Trivia[]

  • Despite their pair name "Emergency Staircase Chill-Out Friends" being known since the game's release, there was no context surrounding it until over half a year later, when Nanaki's 2025 birthday card illustration was revealed on 18TRIP's official X account on December 31, 2024. Kiroku had simply written "See you again on the emergency stairs" as his congratulatory message to Nanaki. The following month, Kiroku's 2025 birthday card was revealed, where Nanaki's reply was written: "Yup, on the emergency stairs."
    • Their hang-out spot was eventually revealed to be a staircase at Hama Asunaro High School, featured for the first time in Nanaki's 2025 White Day SSR card story, "A Memory Wrapped in Time." The corresponding event story "Precious as a White Light" reveals that Kiroku introduced the spot to Nanaki sometime before, and that it’s a place where no one else ever goes. Nanaki describes it as almost like a secret hideout, mentioning that he sometimes comes here even when Kiroku’s not around.
  • In a cast interview from B's Log August 2025 issue, Takeo Otsuka (Nanaki's voice actor) said that he considers Kiroku to be the coolest ward mayor at HAMA Tours. He expressed that he believes Kiroku's constant effort to muster up courage makes him shine.
