“When our family first settled here, there was a girl named Tatia, she was an exquisite beauty.. every boy of age desired to be her suitor even though she had a child by another man. But none loved her more than Niklaus.”
— Elijah to Stefan and Damon

Klatia is the het ship between Tatia and Klaus Mikaelson from the The Vampire Diaries fandom.

Canon[]

Early History[]

During the Middle Ages, Tatia lived in a small village with her Viking husband and their child. However, he ultimately died in battle. Instead of throwing herself on his funeral pyre, as was expected of a Viking widow, she decided to live and move on and eventually met Niklaus Mikaelson. Not much is known about their relationship or how it began, but like his brother, Elijah, he fell deeply in love with Tatia — so much so that even Elijah said that no one loved her more than him. In The Vampire Diaries, it was stated that Tatia loved both Klaus and Elijah and could not choose, while in The Originals, it was revealed she chose Elijah. This caused Klaus to grow estranged from his brother. After the death of their brother Henrik, their mother Esther used Tatia's blood in the spell to turn her children into the Original Vampires. Tatia's blood, which possessed mystical properties due to her status as the originator of the Petrova doppelgänger line, was enchanted by Esther and mixed with the wine that she and Mikael gave their children. When he first killed, Klaus completed his transition, but shockingly, he also triggered the werewolf curse. This led Mikael to find out that Esther had been unfaithful and Klaus was not his son. Tatia eventually found out about Klaus and saw him standing amongst the bodies of innocent people, covered in blood. Before he could even have a chance to explain, she ran away in fear. Elijah caught up to her to try and calm her down, but Tatia tripped and fell, cutting her hand. This caused Elijah to become overwhelmed with his hunger for blood and he fed on Tatia until she died. He brought her body to Esther. Knowing Klaus would never forgive him, he allowed his mother to erase his memory and take the blame for Tatia's death.

After finding out Klaus wasn't his son, Mikael forced Esther (who used what was left of Tatia's blood) to place a curse on Klaus that would suppress his werewolf side, denying him any connection to his true self. Along with thinking she was the one who killed Tatia, Klaus resented Esther ever since and murdered her after she cast the hybrid curse.

The Vampire Diaries[]

In a flashback scene back in 1492, Klaus scolded Elijah when he fell for Katerina Petrova. He told him that vampires did not feel, nor did they care, but an emotional Elijah, wanting to save Katerina, reminded him of Tatia, saying, “We did once.” and Klaus made a sad expression, replying, “..Too many lifetimes ago to matter.”

In Season 3 Episode 13, Klaus and Elijah have dinner with the Salvatore brothers. When Klaus intentionally annoyed Stefan by talking about Elena, he asked Elijah if they should tell them about Tatia, the originator of the Petrova line. Damon asked Elijah to go on, and Elijah continued, saying how every man wanted to be her suitor despite the fact that she was a widow with a child from another man. Klaus' expression turned wistful when Elijah added, “But none loved her more than Niklaus” and responded, "there was one who loved her at least as much". Causing Stefan to figure out that both of them had fallen for Tatia.

The Originals[]

In Season 2 Episode: Brotherhood Of The Damned, Klaus was visibly hurt and angry when Elijah revealed that he was the one who killed Tatia. He considered Elijah to no longer be the "Noble Stag" and that he was even more depraved than he was. Despite feeling incredibly heartbroken over the truth, Klaus proved to Finn that he was capable of forgiveness by forgiving Elijah.

Quotes[]

“None loved her more than Niklaus.”
— Elijah about Tatia
Klaus“Love is a vampire's greatest weakness and we are not weak. We do not feel and we do not care.”
Elijah“...We did once.”
— “..Too many lifetimes ago to matter.” Klaus talking about Tatia
“This is where the first woman I ever loved told me she loved me in return. It's also where I laid her body after I took her life. No one knows this, not even Niklaus.. My brother loved Tatia as DEEPLY as I did. He still believes that mother killed her. Not only is this a lie, this is a lie of my creation. And my brother doesn't forgive. He doesn't forget.”
— Elijah to Camille
“It turns out my brother.. is even more depraved than I am. He is the noble stag no longer. Indeed all together a different beast creeping through the cracks.”
— Klaus hearing the truth about Tatia

Behind The Scenes[]

“We’re really grateful to Nina for coming over to The Originals and for allowing us to finally tell that story … I think it needed to be told. It definitely had a huge impact on who the brothers are today and their family in general. Klaus and Elijah both were certainly interested and invested in Tatia because they both loved her. It’s absolutely going to give us more insight into their relationship because we’re going to see how that love changed their family and how it all played out. The story that they told back on The Vampire Diaries is not exactly what went down and now we’re going to find out what really happened.”
— Joseph Morgan.[1]
“Elijah was actually the one to kill Klaus' (Joseph Morgan's) first love Tatia (Dobrev), the Original doppelganger, all because his thirst for blood became too powerful and he attacked and drained the innocent human.”
— EOnline The Originals Interview.[2]
“Morgan, of course, plays the infamous Klaus Mikaelson, who has some deeply rooted ties to Tatia.”
— ENSTARZ Interview with Joseph Morgan.[3]

Fanon[]

Klatia is one of Klaus' most popular rare-pair ships. Some fans who ship Klaroline, Klayley or Klamille often ship Tatia with Klaus as well because of their tragic story. While Tatia eventually chose Elijah, many preferred him with Katherine (Kalijah) and Klaus with Tatia. Klatia is semi-popular amongst other Klaus ships, but many fans find it bittersweet that Klaus was happy the most as a human when he was with Tatia. Fans also ship the two because of Joseph Morgan and Nina Dobrev's incredible chemistry. It is Tatia's second most popular ship and Klaus' seventh most popular.

Currently Klatia has 33 works on AO3. It is Tatia's second most written ship and Klaus' seventh.
