Knuxails is the friendship between Knuckles and Tails from the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom.
Canon[]
Knuckles and Tails start off as rivals.
In the canonical continuity of the Sonic series, Knuckles and Tails first meet in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles when Knuckles steals the Chaos Emeralds from Tails in his story. This kickstarts a conflict between the two as Knuckles was under the impression that Tails and his friend Sonic were looking to use the Master Emerald's power for malicious purposes. At the end of Angel Island Zone's second act, Knuckles presses a button which drops Tails down into Hydrocity Zone, starting the first act of the mentioned water level. Knuckles once again presses a button later in Hydrocity Zone act 1 to drop Tails down towards the miniboss. Before the start of Carnival Night Zone's second act, Knuckles presses a light before Tails and runs away.
In Launch Base Zone Zone act 1, Knuckles catches Tails off guard and throws a bomb as the latter attempts to progress through the stage. And as Tails rides in the Egg Mobile to make it to the boss of the second act, Knuckles punches the flying machine backwards before he can continue, letting out a chuckle. But the pillar he's standing on falls, allowing him to continue. Knuckles and Tails share a fight in Hidden Palace Zone, but they seem to make peace with each other after Knuckles sees Robotnik stealing the Master Emerald; as Knuckles was willing to lead Tails to Sky Sanctuary Zone before parting ways with him.

Sonic and Knuckles are both introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While Tails becomes Sonic's ally, Knuckles joins up with Doctor Robotnik because he mistakenly believes they will work together to save the Master Emerald. This puts Tails and Knuckles on opposing sides, although by the end of the film Knuckles becomes a good guy. He is then adopted by Tom and Maddie, who have already adopted both Sonic and Tails. The three of them live in the attic together, and take on a relationship as a found family. Knuckles often calls Tails "Fox".
Fanon[]
Most members of the Sonic fandom tend to view Knuckles and Tails as brotherly figures due to their closeness, but the ship has both a fanbase for its romantic variant and its platonic variant. “Knuckles & Tails” under the Gen category on AO3 is the fifth most popular ship for Knuckles and the third most popular ship for Tails respectively. However, this ship is generally preferred less than Knuxouge, Tailsmo, Taiream, and even Sontails or Sonuckles. On the other hand, the friendship between Knuckles and Tails provides plenty of room for clever jokes in the games and most media the two appear in together as well as providing potential for ship fanfics. In some Sonic fan games such as Sonic 3 A.I.R., the possibility of playing as Knuckles and Tails as a duo is possible.
