- “I was going to die. Magic happened then. I saw Hydrad’s eyes roll up to the whites as he gave a sigh, let go of the spear and fell across me. A sea otter like myself pushed Hydrad’s body off me. He had the nicest smile as he held out his paw and said, ‘Sorry about that, miss. I meant ‘im t’fall the other way. You stick by me, I’ll see you safe!’
That was how I met Kroova Wavedog.” - — Sleeve’s narrative of her meeting Kroova, Triss
Kreeve is the het ship between Kroova Wavedog and Sleeve from the Redwall fandom.
Canon[]
Kroova and Sleeve are sea otters, both orphaned, who appear in the novel Triss. Sleeve was a slave in the kingdom of Riftgard, which Kroova came to help liberate. During the battle ignited by the arrival of Kroova and his allies, Sleeve joined other slaves in rising up. She was set upon by a slave overseer named Hydrad, but Kroova killed the rat as he was about to kill Sleeve.
Pushing her would be murderer’s body off of her, Kroova greeted Sleeve kindly and advised her to stay with him for safety. The battle soon ended in victory for the slaves and their liberators. Kroova and Sleeve would hang a banner, emblazoned with the word “Freedom”, over the gates of Riftgard Castle. Later, they sat together at the victory feast.
Among the prisoners brought up from the castle dungeons was an orphaned infant mouse. Both Kroova and Sleeve felt immediate affection for the little creature. They began tending to him as though he were their own child. Questioned by their friend Triss as to what they would name him, Kroova answered “Freedom,” to which Sleeve apparently agreed.
Though he did not come from Riftgard himself, Kroova chose to remain there with Sleeve. Neither of them remembered their own parents, but they resolved to raise Freedom together with another former slave taking on the role of grandfather to the infant mouse. This slave, Mokug, and Kroova also became leaders in the new community at Riftgard, with Sleeve noting that others looked to them for their experience. She further noted that Kroova, though sad to see his other friends depart, was happy to have something-and someone-to call his own.
In High Rhulain, one of the featured otter clans is the Wavedog clan, presumably descended from Kroova and Sleeve.
Fanon[]
Kreeve doesn’t have as much popularity as some Redwall pairings, having only appeared in print and not in animation. It is also among the least covered official pairings, being entirely contained within the final chapter of Triss. However, it is also somewhat unique, with the two characters forming a partnership quite rapidly. Moreover, though other couples in the franchise have had children, Kreeve is the only pairing where an adopted child contributes to the couple being formed.
