During fourth grade, Fujino would make 4-komas for her school's weekly newspaper, often getting praise from her classmates due to her drawing skills. Fujino enjoyed this praise, even indulging in it. Later, Fujino is asked by her teacher if she could give one of the 4-koma slots to Kyomoto, a truant student from the class next door.  She accepts yet begins to pick on her, calling her a wimp and saying, "Drawing decent art would be difficult for an amateur.”

Next week, when the newspapers were handed out, Fujino was shock to see that Kyomoto's art was far more advanced than she thought. When the other classmate’s see Kyomoto’s skill, they are amazed. This ended up with Kyomoto taking away the spot-light from Fujino, even being told that her art looked average compared to Kyomoto’s drawings. Because of this, Fujino begins to practice art every day, swearing that she’ll be a better artist than Kyomoto. As she tries to improve, she also starts having less and less free time to hang out with her friends, spend time with her family, her test scores even begin to go down as she stayed in her room all day drawing. Her friends begin to criticize her for this, saying that people are going to think she’s some creepy otaku.

When the next newspaper comes in, she sees Kyomoto’s art right next to hers, she decides to quit art completely in that moment since she feels that her art will never be as good as Kyomoto’s drawings. Now that Fujino has quit art, she now has a lot more free time than she did before, being able to hang out with her friends, watching movies with her family, even joining her sister’s karate class. She even throws away all her sketchbooks.

Fujino and Kyomoto actually meet in person when Fujino is asked to drop off Kyomoto's middle school graduation diploma by one of her teachers, Fujino tries to refuse but is urged by him. When Fujino arrives at Kyomoto’s house, she rings the doorbell, she is met with no answer. She checks if the door is locked to see it isn’t so she walks into the house. Kyomoto is home but tries to keep quiet but fails, accidentally making a noise, making Fujino aware someone’s home. She walks down the hallway, crossing Kyomoto’s room and sees that the whole hallway is filled with sketchbooks, presumably own by Kyomoto herself. Upon seeing the pile of sketchbooks, she spots a Yonkoma slip. She grabs it and starts to draw a comic about Kyomoto being a shut-in, making fun of her for being staying in her room all day. Fujino accidentally drops the paper and it slips right into Kyomoto’s room under the door. Embarrassed, Fujino tries to run away after hearing Kyomoto acknowledge the paper. Fujino speed walks out the house. After realizing the paper was draw by Fujino, Kyomoto than runs out the house and after Fujino, yelling her name. Fujino stops in her tracks, looking back at Kyomoto.

She starts to argue with her, even mentioning that she’ll have to talk to strangers since she knows that Kyomoto isn’t the best at socializing with new people. Kyomoto states that she wants to live on her own without having to be so dependent on Fujino. Fujino still insist that it’s point and saying that it’s going to be boring. They go back and forth, Kyomoto saying she’ll practice talking to people and Fujino saying she’ll fail at it. Kyomoto starts to cry and mutters that she wants to improve her art as her reasoning. Fujino leaves it at that as the two go their separate ways; Kyomoto going to art school while Fujino works on the series.
