Canon[]
Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach[]
Uhura enters the bridge where she finds La'an waiting for her. La'an asks if she found her break restful and Uhura says that she did. La'an says that's lesson two: there are no breaks in security. As the Enterprise is attacked La'an has order to take out the other ships weapons. La'an tells Uhura to put the ships phasers at minimum capacity, but when they fire another attack Uhura accidentally causes the ship to be destroyed.
La'an and Uhura enter the crashed ship and La'an asks for life signs. Uhura says there's no readings, but La'an tells her to sweep the area and be on alert. Uhura looks to a panel and is about to press something when La'an tells her she failed lesson three of security: let her tricorder do the investigating. Ships are sometimes equipped with a failsafe that will blow them up after a crash. Uhura scans that panel and finds that they're in no danger of getting blown up, but that the crewmembers did wipe their own data banks. La'an says that luck runs out at some point and to be more careful next time.
La'an goes to Uhura in the mess hall and tells her to look at a box of data chips. Uhura asks if they're from the crash sight and La'an says that may be the case. Uhura is sure that's against protocol, but La'an gives her lesson six: know when to bend the rules. La'an says Starfleet wouldn't approve of this so she can't put it through the ships translator. Uhura realizes that La'an wants her to translate all of them, and La'an says that Uhura is a linguist.
La'an heads to Uhura's quarters where Uhura tells her that she looked through all the datafiles and found out where the attackers were from. La'an says that Uhura just did the bare minimum, but Uhura says that she also found the root of their language. She found way more than what La'an asked for. La'an says they need to take it to the captain and Uhura says to let her know what he says. La'an says that it's Uhura's works, so she should be the one to present it. If she's sure of her findings, and Uhura is.
When El Gamal calls Uhura delusional La'an immediately comes to her defense. Stating that Uhura is just stating facts and coming to their most logical conclusion. Uhura thanks her for defending her and Uhura summarizes everything she found out. La'an says that Uhura is promising and has done an excellent job of lesson seven: leave no stone unturned. Which she usually has them look under Mugatan breathing stones for that, and Uhura is relieved she won't be doing that.

This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
La'an x Uhura are a rare pair in the Strange New Worlds fandom. It did gain some fans after "Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach" had them share most of their screentime. It's still relatively small given that La'an has more popular ships with other SNW characters and Uhura having more popular ships with TOS characters. On AO3 there are currently six works.
