“But I want to be there when you tell Nate 'cause I want to see the look on his face. He's gonna be so pissed. You see he's gonna stand there like: 'Yeah, I don't think you belong in a Jaegar, Jake. Get out of my Jaegar. I'm handsome and sexy.' He is handsome. He is sexy.”

Nate is shocked to see Jake back at the Defense Corps. Jake dryly asks how Nate is doing, and he tells him to call him Ranger Lambert. Jake asks if he's joking, and Nate responds that they're on a military base, he should remember how it works. He then tells Amara to get settled in, and starts leading the way. He explains how protocol works for training to Amara, who asks which of the Jaegar's are his. Nate looks over at Jake and tells her it's Gipsy Avenger. Jules shows up who Jake starts to hit on before getting interrupted by Nate. He tells him to keep his eyes forward, and starts to lead the rest of the way to the cadet rooms. Nate introduces the cadets to Amara and Jake. He asks if Jake has anything to add. He doesn't. At least not anything Nate wants them to hear. They get Amara set and both leave.

After Amara is unable to complete the simulator, Nate questions her abilities, while Jake questions why they're setting up new recruits against Kaiju that killed Veteran pilots. Nate asks if Amara isn't the only one who doesn't belong there. Jake's fine if Nate has a problem with him, but he needs to leave Amara out of it, since she's just a kid. Nate reminds him that so were they. They need to make the connection when they're young to make better drift pilots. Jake says that he remembers the sale pitch.

That night, Jake looks through the kitchen, when Nate shows up behind him, questioning what he's wearing. Jake jokingly says that Jules loves it and offers Nate a drink. Nate says yes and points Jake to where the ice cream is. He asks if Jake came back to prove his dad wrong, but Jake evades it with jokes. Nate wants the kids to look up to them, so they need to show how they can work together. Jake continues to evade Nate's statement by telling him the war ended ten years ago. Nate tries to talk but Jake interrupts him by loudly adding whipped cream to his ice cream. Nate is able to get out that they don't understand the Kaiju's objective, so he doesn't believe they've really defeated them. Jake thinks that the Kaiju were sent to wipe them all out, but Nate dismisses that idea. Jake tells him he doesn't have a problem with Nate, he'd just had to choose between Nate's pretty face and prison. He chose Nate. Nate jokingly says he's honored, and then asks how many topping Jake needs. Jake says to leave the toppings alone. Jake asks how long the recruits have till graduate, and Nate says that they have six. Jakes thinks that anytime Nate says something soldiery, he'll just agree and then when they're done he can get back to his life. Nate sarcastically says great, and that it may happen sooner than he thinks. Jake asks why, and Nate explains that Shao is coming to show off some new drone tech they have that could make them obsolete. Jake thinks that sounds like his get out of jail free card and starts to leave. Nate stops him and says that Jake can pretend he doesn't care all he wants but they both know he could have been great. He then walks off as Jake watches.

Mako tells Jake that she requested Gipsy Avenger as honor guard when she goes to the council summit, and that Jake will pilot it. Jake says that it's Nate's Jaegar, but Mako reminds him that Nate's partner left and he needs a new one. Jake specifically knows that they need one that is already drift compatible with Nate. Jake agrees but only if he can be there when she tells Nate, just to see how pissed he'll be. He starts mimicking Nate, including making fun of Nate thinking he's handsome and sexy. He admits that that's actually true though.

Nate and Jake are dropped in their jaeger as Jake almost gets lost in a memory. Nate pulls him out, and Jake says it's just coming back to him. Nate asks if he's sure, but Jake ignores him. He reminds him that they're in each other's heads and would appreciate it if Jake would stop thinking about Jules. Jake says he will as long as Nate stops thinking about kicking his ass. Nate whispers that it's going to be a long day.

Things start to feel weird as a rogue jaeger climbs out of the ocean. Nate orders the other jaeger to stand down, but it instead fires on the PPCD building. Jake and Nate are able to catch some falling debris, but are continually fired upon. Jake says that they're running out of power, and Nate is able to get the power back. They throw the debris at the jaeger and engage it in hand to hand combat. They seem to be losing, but are able to collect themselves for a moment and pull out their sword. The jaeger then pulls out two swords and backs them into a corner. Jake asks what they should do, and Nate tells him to follow his lead. They're able to push it back, but the jaeger is able to hit Mako's helicopter. Jake says that they need to move, and Nate activates that gravity sling. They momentarily take out the jaeger and run to rescue Mako. They don't make it in time, and Mako's helicopter crashes. Jake calls for her and runs out of the jaeger as Nate yells for him to wait.

Jake walks by as he listens to Nate start reprimanding the trainees. He tells them that Mako said that when you join the program you become a family. He looks to Jake as he says that no matter how stupid family members may act, you forgive them and move on. Jules then arrives and says that the Marshal is looking for the two of them.

Nate and Jake take Gipsy Avenger to Siberia after decoding the message from Mako. They arrive, but Nate thinks it's a dead end since there's nothing there. Jake gets some weird readings, when they're fired on by the rogue jaeger. Nate tells Jake to take out his legs and he does so. The fight the jaeger hand to hand when it starts to fire on them. Nate says that they need to get out of there and Jake punches them through the ice to escape. They're able to sneak up on the jaeger, and use the plasma canon to throw it back. Nate thinks they pissed it off, and Jake thinks that's good. They pull out the sword, and Jake asks if Nate remembers their old move. Nate responds with a "hell yeah", and the two are able to execute it. Jake says it looks hurt, and Nate says to go for the power core. They defeat the jaeger only to discover that the pilots are actually Kaiju parts.

After Amara informs Jake that the jaeger was made with parts from Shao industries, Jake tells Hermann and Nate. Hermann says that Shao doesn't even have a bio division, and Jake says that's only as far as they know. Nate points out that the parts could have been stolen, and they're going to need more to connect the jaeger to Shao. Jake says that they'll that their information to the Marshall while Hermann goes to Newt.

Fanon

Some were shipping the two before the film was even released. Post film many were shipping them more. Many noted Jake commenting on Nate's looks throughout the film, and how their previous relationship was talked about. There are those who thought they were fighting like bitter exes, and like to explore that aspect in fic.

On AO3 it is the most written ship for both characters. It is also the fifteenth most written ship in Pacific Rim tag.
