Lawkanne is the femslash ship between Lawine and Kanne from the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End fandom.
Canon[]
Lawine and Kanne are both young third-class mages from the same academy of magic. The two of them are paired into a team with one another as Äußerst First-Class Exam Examinees. Lawine and Kanne can both manipulate water, which is part of why they frequently engage in combat together. Despite two pairs' frequent arguments, the two seem to view each other as a synchronized team, as Lawine can utilize the water Kanne manipulates with her ice magic.
The two often get into physical altercations with one another as a result of their arguments. Kanne likes to fuss with Lawine, which usually earns her a headlock or a suplex. In return, Lawine tends to pull on Kanne's pigtails whenever they argue when she pins her down on the ground. This shows an immature and youthful side of Lawine that she does not show towards others given her usual stoicism and respectability. Her demeanor, aside from when bullying Kanne, is also quite refined.
In their debut chapter, Kanne admits that she can freeze up at crucial times due to her cowardice and recalls an instance of her freezing up during her first flight magic training. During her training, she is sitting at the edge of a cliff overlooking a lake. Lawine is standing beside her while the rest of their classmates successfully practice their flight magic far off in the distance, a fact that Lawine points out in order to encourage Kanne. Lawine continues by saying that if Kanne does not have the courage to fly, then she can kick her off the cliff for a boost. This leads Kanne to say that she hates Lawine because she is always saying mean things and Kanne is the type who improves with praise.
Lawine calls Kanne spoiled and says that she will praise Kanne when she is actually able to fly. Kanne responded by telling Lawine to talk about her good points, to which Lawine at first responds dismissively, but after seeing Kanne is upset, she admits that Kanne is a hard worker. Kanne prompts her to say more, so Lawine talks about the secret effort Kanne puts in, her attentiveness and care towards her peers, and that Kanne is cute when she laughs. Upon hearing this last quality, Kanne flat out refutes Lawine's words, saying that she is wrong, which causes Lawine to kick her off the cliff as she had earlier promised. Kanne, despite her screaming, is able to arrest her fall with her flight magic near the water. She is shortly joined by Lawine, who smiles and says that Kanne is able to use flight magic after all, so she won't be kind with her anymore.
First-Class Mage Exam Arc[]
Lawine and Kanne are properly debuted together in their introductory chapter (chap. 38) and episodes, where they are paired with Frieren during the first exam. The two of them are shown as a bickering relationship where they frequently argue with one another. Lawine often compensates for Kanne's weaknesses in some manners. In particular, Kanne is shown as being bad at detecting mana, as, unlike Lawine, she cannot see that Frieren has the mana of an elderly mage.
Though Lawine chides her, Frieren sits down on a log and asks if the party would like to take a break. Kanne is quick to sit down opposite Frieren but Lawine states that she isn't so tired as to need rest yet and decides to scout ahead. This incites another argument between her and Kanne, with Kanne saying they should stick together for safety and Lawine arguing it will be more time efficient if she goes ahead. Frieren asks Lawine whether she is powerful. Lawine quickly says that she is more powerful than Kanne, nearly causing another fight between the two, but Frieren interjects and asks Lawine if she is powerful compared to Frieren herself. This causes Lawine to grow serious and she tells Frieren that she would not want to fight her. Hearing this, Frieren tells her she is free to go scout, but to come back immediately if there is danger. Lawine responds dismissively to Frieren's warning, considering she was already aware of potential danger. Meanwhile, Kanne reacts with confusion.
Kanne tells Frieren that despite Lawine's harshness, she has always led Kanne properly. She reveals the lesson she learned from Lawine, inspiring her to overcome her cowardice.
Lawine develops a dislike towards Richer for defeating her and Kanne during the first half of their fight in the previous round but actively tried to kill them. Lawine and Kanne both also initially refuse to work with Denken's group at the outset of the second exam.
Fanon[]
Lawkanne became a relatively well-liked ship in the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End fandom during the exam arc of the series. A lot of people interpreted their interactions as romantic. Some of their interactions read as ship tease, or even romantic subtext. Though this garnered some contention from viewers and readers who prefer to see their dynamic as sisterly or otherwise platonic. Regardless, the two garnered a decently sized fanbase with lots of fan works in fanfic and fanart.
The pair currently has 50+ fan works on A03, with it being the most written ship for both characters. It is the fourth and fifth most written romantic ship on A03 under the fandom tag for the manga and anime respectively.
