Prologues[]
While on the run from so-called witches, Espella Cantabella seeks the help of Professor Hershel Layton, Layton and his apprentice Luke Triton investigate the scene of an incident that, according to Espella, has involved witches. Determined to help her, they chase after her after a witch kidnapped her and in the process get sucked into a book that Espella carried with her, Phoenix Wright gets caught up in the same incident with his friend and assistant Maya Fey, having been called to London for an exchange organized by the Legal League of Attorneys, like Layton, Phoenix Wright is tackling the case of Espella and are both determined to prove her innocence.
While Phoenix does successfully defend Espella and prove her innocence he couldn’t have done so without the Professor’s help. These two honestly don’t interact much in canon as they’re from two different games with one crossover game that didn’t leave many satisfied with their level of interaction. However, that doesn’t mean the two don’t have the potential for chemistry or things in common.
Both Layton and Pheonix work with the law, Layton is called in to assist on cases with interpol while Phoenix is a defense attorney. They’re both fathers and mentors and end up in completely ridiculous situations. And they have a dark/tragic history regarding their respective romantic interests; Layton’s girlfriend died twice and Phoenix was used as a scapegoat and had the truth hidden from him about Dahila.

LayWright is a rare pair with approximately 75 fanfics on Ao3, Not even rivaling WrightWorth which tends to be the OTP between Phoenix and Edgeworth however, the fanfics for Laywright, though small in number, are long in length, notably the slow-burn fan-fiction series the “Melodyverse” clocking in at a 882,000+ word count.
A common theme throughout most fanfics of Phoenix/Layton is Phoenix re-meeting the professor during his “disbarred era” as it tends to add an angst and hurt/comfort aspect to their potential interactions.
Often the two meet while Layton is visiting his apprentice Luke abroad in America and run into another. This saddled with Phoenix having to care for a child, adds to the potential bond between the two, as Layton and Phoenix can bond over being fathers and mentors. That alongside their own tragic histories of romance and loss thereof.
Laywright as a pairing tends to focus on the emotional bond between the two rather than the physical. Touching upon topics such as both Layton and Phoenix’s self deprecating behaviors and becoming better fathers for their children.
