The Lion Guard is the friend ship between Kion, Beshte, Bunga, Fuli, Ono, and Anga from The Lion King fandom.

Canon[]

Pre-Series[]

The five original members of the Lion Guard have been friends for much-or in Ono's case all-of their lives. Kion, Beshte, Bunga, and Fuli had all met some time prior to Ono's hatching, as seen in The Lion Guard episode "The Lake of Reflection." Kion and Bunga had just come upon Beshte in the midst of a game, and Fuli then came up to inform Kion of a hyena taking an egg. Feeling that the matter was too urgent to spend time alerting his father Simba of the matter, Kion led his three friends to try and recover the egg themselves.

This would lead to the four friends meeting Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu for the first time, and confronting them in order to rescue the egg. As Janja attempted to escape with the egg while his two underlings held off the Pride Landers, Kion directed his friends to deal with the two hyenas and snatch the egg while he went after Janja. The gambit worked, and the egg began hatching just after the hyenas were driven out of the Pride Lands. Ono proved to be the egg's inhabitant, thus marking the start of his friendship with the other four despite his ignorance of the adventure they went through to save him.

The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar[]

Much later, Kion would select his four friends to join him as the latest incarnation of the Lion Guard. Having been gifted the magical Roar of the Elders, and thus the role of the Pride Lands' Fiercest, Kion set out to recruit the other members. Bunga, his best friend, was quickly chosen as the Bravest, and they proceeded to gather their other three friends. Kion promptly judged Beshte to be the Strongest, Fuli the Fastest, and Ono the Keenest of Sight.

Fuli was somewhat skeptical of the proposition to begin with, partly viewing it as a case of lions exercising their authority over the other Pride Lands animals. While she agreed with Kion's assessment that she was the Pride Lands' Fastest, she was less sure Kion himself could be considered the Fiercest. The others were somewhat more confident, and Bunga-having witnessed Kion's use of the Roar-urged Kion to demonstrate it for Fuli. Unfortunately, not only was Kion unable to perform, but his father Simba then arrived and made it clear that he thought Kion was playing with his friends instead of taking his new responsibilities seriously.

Hurt by his father's accusation, Kion was sure that he had found the best animals in the Pride Lands to fulfill the roles expected of the Lion Guard. After receiving encouragement from the spirit of his grandfather Mufasa, Kion was found by Bunga, who led him to where Beshte, Fuli, and Ono were observing a raiding group of hyenas. Appalled by the excess of the hyenas, who showed no respect for the Circle of Life, Kion's friends were surprised when he reaffirmed his choice of each of them to be part of the new Lion Guard. After learning that they were willing to be part of the group, Kion touched each of them one by one with his paw, magically giving each of them the Mark of the Guard.

Kion then gave his friends directions as to how best to deal with the hyenas and save Kion's sister Kiara, who was in peril. After succeeding in both tasks, Kion confronted Janja, the hyena leader, and warned him that creatures who disrespected the Circle of Life as he had were unwelcome in the Pride Lands. His friends then watched in awe as he used the Roar to send the hyenas flying. Simba, having witnessed these heroics, decided that he had been wrong about Kion's selections, and approved his son and his friends as the new Lion Guard.

In "Return to the Pride Lands", Kion's expanded Guard and their companions, including several Outlands allies, are nearing the edge of the Pride Lands when they are confronted by another Lion Guard consisting of former Outsiders led by Vitani. After a brief clash, Kiara arrives to break up the fighting and explain to Kion that things have changed in the Pride Lands in his absence. Most of the Outsiders have rejoined Simba's pride, meaning that they are now friends to Kion and his teammates and allies. After presenting themselves to Kion's parents, the Guard breaks up to visit various friends and relatives in the Pride Lands.

The following day, the Guard entered their Lair only to find Vitani's Guard in residence. A dispute soon arose between the two Guards, with Vitani claiming her Guard had the right to defend the Pride Lands since she was the sister of Kovu, the future king. However, Kion responded by noting that his guard was the rightful one due to being led by the brother of the future queen, and reminding Vitani that he was the one with the Roar of the Elders traditionally conferred on the Guard's leader. Ultimately, it was decided that the two groups’ members should compete against each other individually to determine which Guard was best suited to protect the Pride Lands.

After four such contests, each Guard had won two each, leaving the matter to be decided between Kion and Vitani. However, after seeing Vitani’s willingness to face him despite her disadvantage without the Roar, Kion declared that she had thus proven herself the Pride Lands’ Fiercest. He thus conferred on her the Roar and the Mark of the Guard. After Vitani exercised her new power for the first time, the Marks disappeared from the shoulders of each member of Kion’s Guard, making them all wistful.

The spirit of Askari, leader of the first Lion Guard, then appeared to commend Kion and declare that he had earned true mastery of the Roar by his willingness to give it up. When Askari suggested that Kion might use the Roar to help defend the Tree of Life, the Mark of the Night Pride given to him by Queen Janna appeared on his shoulder. Kion then turned to his former teammates to ask if they would join him in returning to the Tree of Life to help defend it. Each of them answered affirmatively, and the Marks given them by Queen Rani appeared in response. The friends were soon back at the Tree of Life, with Kion’s friends being among those who attended his coronation and wedding to Rani.

The members of the Lion Guard are, of course, the central characters of the series of the same name. Their relationship is thus featured in each episode of the series to varying degrees. The series, and thus the group, are not universally popular with fans of The Lion King. This stems from various factors, including The Lion Guard series being aimed at a younger audience.

There are 11 works tagged for the relationship on AO3, one of which is rated Mature.
