As Louis is trying drunkenly stumble his way into being killed in a duel, a vampire watches him from the balcony. As he leaves, the vampire follows behind to the docks. The vampire attacks the two people surrounding Louis, before biting down on Louis neck, draining his blood. As he finishes, he asks Louis if he still wants to death, or if he's had enough. Louis says he's had enough, and the vampire smiles as he drops him into the harbor.

Louis returns home, incredibly sick. As he lay in bed, the vampire, Lestat, enters the room and Louis pulls a gun on him, demanding to know why he's there. Lestat says that he's here to answer Louis' prayers, and offers him a new life. Louis seems hesitant, but Lestat assures him that he'll give him a choice, and leads him away to talk.

The next night, Louis awaits Lestat in the graveyard, who appears and asks if Louis is done saying goodbye to the sun. Lestat then bites at his neck and tackles him to the ground, draining him of his blood. He finishes and tells Louis that he could leave him there to die, or he could change him, but it's his choice. Louis whispers out a yes, and Lestat slits his wrist, and starts to feed Louis his blood. Louis forces himself to push away, and painfully turns into a vampire. Lestat helps him stand, telling him to now look through the world with his vampire eyes.

Lestat and Louis stay at Louis's estate for three years after this, and the two argue constantly, Lestat trying to get Louis to accept his vampirism, but Louis feels that he is damned.

After the slaves at the estate rebel, Louis burns down the building, and the two move to the Rue Royale.

But their struggles only come to a head when Lestat turns a young child named Claudia into a vampire, forcing Louis to stay with him so that they can raise her together, Louis comes to love Claudia dearly, but hates what Lestat has done to her.

The three live together for around sixty years, and Claudia and Louis greatly desire more freedom, but only Claudia decides to act on her wishes.

Claudia attempts to kill Lestat, and when she believes he is dead, she has Louis dump his body in the swamp, something which Louis is horrified by.

Claudia

When Louis was desperately searching the city for rats to eat, he came upon a girl named Claudia and her dead mother. The girl asks for his help, but he ends up draining her of her blood. Lestat finds the two, and is glad that Louis is embracing his vampire nature but Louis runs away. Lestat realizes that the girl is still somewhat alive and brings her back to their home. He finds Louis and brings him home so that he can watch as Lestat feeds Claudia his blood and turn her into a vampire. She takes to it quickly and Lestat declares them one happy family, Louis knowing he only did it so that he would stay with him.

As the years passed, Claudia's mind grew, but not her body. She became furious at Lestat and Louis for turning her and not letting her to grow up. She decides to kill Lestat, and ropes Louis into it. They flee for Paris when the deed is done. There, they meet several vampires, who kill Claudia for killing Lestat, leaving Louis heartbroken, and kills them in vengeance. Years later, Louis found Lestat alive again, and he expressed that it was a mistake to turn her.

Quote[]

“It was as if the empty nights were made for thinking of him. And sometimes I found myself so vividly aware of him it was as if he had only just left the room and the ring of his voice were still there. And somehow, there was a disturbing comfort in that, and, despite myself, I’d envision his face.”
— Louis; Interview With the Vampire
“I allowed myself to forget how totally I had fallen in love with Lestat's iridescent eyes, that I'd sold my soul for a many-colored and luminescent thing, thinking that a highly reflective surface conveyed the power to walk on water.”
— Louis; Interview With the Vampire
“Shortly after reaching the colony, I fell fatally in love with Louis, a young dark-haired bourgeois planter, graceful of speech and fastidious of manner, who seemed in his cynicism and self destructiveness the very twin of Nicolas.”
— Lestat; The Vampire Lestat
“And why should I bother to tell of the times he came to me in wretched anxiety, begging me never to leave him, of the times we walked together and talked together, acted Shakespeare together for Claudia's amusement, or went arm in arm to hunt the riverfront taverns or to waltz with the dark-skinned beauties of the celebrated quadroon balls? Read between the lines.”
— Lestat; The Vampire Lestat
“I nodded. I took a deep breath and looked away from him, wishing I could say what I really wanted to say. That I loved him. But I couldn't do that. The feeling was too strong.”
— Lestat; The Vampire Lestat
“Is this an offer, Louis? Have you come back to me, as lovers say?”
— Lestat; The Vampire Lestat
“'Do you love me now?' I asked. He smiled; oh, it was excruciating to see his face soften and brighten simultaneously when he smiled. 'Yes,' he said.”
— Queen of the Damned
“'Yes, I know,' I said, loving to look at him, to see the anger pumping him so full of life. 'And I love to hear you say it, Louis. I need to hear you say it. I don't think anyone will ever say it quite like you do. Come on, say it again. I'm a perfect devil. Tell me how bad I am. It makes me feel so good!'”
— Lestat; Queen of the Damned
“'I love you,' he said softly. 'You're always looking for a way to triumph,' he continued. 'You never give in. But there is no way to triumph. This is purgatory we're in, you and I. All we can be is thankful that it isn't actually hell.'”
— Louis; The Tale of the Body Thief
“Sometimes you frighten me so badly I hurl sticks and stones at you. It’s foolish. I’m glad to see you, though I dread admitting it…I can’t bear the thought of existence now without you! You infuriate me! Why don’t you laugh at me? You’ve done it before.”
— Louis; The Tale of the Body Thief
Louis“Why do you love me?”
Lestat“You know, you've always known. I wish I could be you. I wish I could know the joy you know all the time.”
Louis“And the pain, you want that as well?”
Lestat“Your pain? Certainly. I'll take your brand of pain anytime, as they say.”
— The Tale of the Body Thief
