- —Charlie in "Overture", about Lilith and Lucifer
Lucilith is the het ship between Lucifer Morningstar and Lilith from the Hazbin Hotel fandom.
Canon[]
Not much is known about Lucifer and Lilith’s relationship, apart from their marriage. It is also possible that the storybook Charlie Morningstar reads in the first episode “Overture”, chronicling the start of sin and her parents’ relationship may be unreliable narrating or an altered version of the true story.
The book titled “The Story of Hell” Charlie reads every time an extermination happens tells the following tale of how Lucifer was an angel, a dreamer with fantastical ideas. The elders of Heaven saw him as a troublemaker, resulting in Lucifer watching the universe expand without him. Lilith was created as one of the first humans, alongside Adam, who wanted total control over her. Lilith refused to submit to Adam and ran away, distraught. Lucifer was truly drawn in by her independence, and as a result, he found her in the Garden of Eden, and the two rebellious dreamers fell deeply in love.
Together with ideals different from the norm, they wanted to share the power of free will, the two offered the Fruit of Knowledge to Adam’s new wife Eve, who would accept this proposition. However, this action resulted in a curse as evil entered Earth into a new realm of sin. As a punishment, Heaven casted Lucifer and Lilith out to Hell where the lovers could only see the darkness they created and never the flourishing good.
This banishment had different effects on Lucifer and Lilith. Lucifer was deeply disheartened and ashamed by the consequences of their actions, and he lost his will to dream, now a fallen angel and the ruler of hell, and at some point became one of the Seven Deadly Sins. However, Lilith thrived in this new environment, and empowered demon-kind to the point Heaven started a yearly extermination to ensure Hell could never rise up.
Afterwards, although the details are untold, Lucifer and Lilith then married at some point and had a daughter, Charlie. In family portraits, Lucifer and Lilith are shown alongside and appear happy and overjoyed together with Charlie. However, for unclear reasons, Lilith split from Lucifer and took Charlie with her. This separation proved to send Lucifer into a deep depression where he would craft rubber ducks to cope, showing he was deeply broken by this event. Even after they split, Lucifer wears a golden ring that appears to be from their marriage.
In the series, Lucifer and Lilith have their fair share of differences. Lucifer feels guilt for neglecting Charlie and tries his best in the series to repair their relationship, expressing his deep love and care for her. On the other hand, Lilith can be labeled as his polar opposite. She is shown to be on the same level of, if not more, neglectful to Charlie as she disappeared for 7 years in Heaven. She appears to be uncaring of Charlie’s dreams, compared to Lucifer who desires Charlie’s safety.
Fanon[]
Lucilith is a relatively popular ship within the fandom. Fans were mainly drawn in by this pairing for the fact Lucifer and Lilith’s relationship is a very important pairing in the series, and other facts such as how appealing they look with each other. Additionally, the melancholic and saddening story of their romance, where they were deeply in love but ended up separating, resulting in Lucifer’s depression, led fans to enjoy their relationship due to the “angst” appeal. Lucifer falling into depression after splitting with Lilith, showing his care about the family, was also a reason for Lucilith being popular.
A popular aspect to the ship is Lucifer and Lilith’s contrasts. Lucifer in the present is very awkward and unsociable, while Lilith is described with fierce independence and told to thrive living in Hell while Lucifer was ashamed. Faustisse, former illustrator and visual developer for Hazbin Hotel, believed Lucifer and Lilith’s relationship could be summed up with the phrase, "Behind every man is a greater woman", and that they love each other very much. They describe Lilith and Lucifer as "passionate, cheesy lovers". Faustisse has the opinion that Lilith "wears the pants” in the family, but they think both Lilith and Lucifer are switches within their intimate life.[1] Though possibly outdated, this information serves as an establishment for fans who understand Lucifer and Lilith’s dynamic as Lucifer being more goofy and cheerful whilst Lilith is the more regal and confident one of their relationship who takes the lead.
Despite being canon, Lucilith is rivaled by Lucifer’s ships such as RadioApple or Lucieve. Lucilith is sometimes shipped alongside Chaggie, a fellow canon ship. Lucilith has over 600 works on AO3.
